Sir Albert Masson hears a deep howling noise which seems to have emanated from inside the river.
His Aural Ring started to shimmer, and it revealed a blindingly glowing figure of a...wait, what the heck was that?!

Thinking that encountering whatever 'that' was that made that noise face-to-face was not in his best interests at the moment, he was content to memorize this information and the appearance of the figure through the magic of the Aural Ring.

After a slightly longer while, an even more blindingly glowing figure showed up, one which was hazy in appearance, but shortly faded away after a couple of seconds.

"I'm going to have to find a gemstone to empower this ring and retrieve more of the encoded data it was just fed," Albert murmured to himself, as the old Aural Ring had long since lost its previous fixture of Ametrine.

After pondering all of this, he sailed out to the East.

The codfish-beast fastens the locket, the only thing it has to remember its mother, around its neck.

It feels the vibrations of the waters speaking to him (when it was a wee codfish, it would use this ability to evade those looking to make it into a meal, but it seems that this ability carried over in its transformation. In fact, it had become more powerful). It sensed a large object moving along with the river above him, and moving on to the next area.

The codfish-beast was hungry. Perhaps it was a whale, or maybe a large shark. The codfish-beast touched its tongue on its rows of teeth, and followed the large mass to the East.

Sir Albert Masson realizes the bigger glowing figure is following him around.

Sighing, he touches the bottom of his boat with the Materia Gauntlet. It reacts to the tar-sealed wood, and changes into the exact same material. It starts to splinter into several spikes, and finally, Albert's body becomes the same type of wood. Albert feels some of his own strength has been lost by doing this. (-5 MP)

Albert docks "Atramentous" on the side of one of many small rocky hills protruding out of the water, and starts floating on top of the water, looking for the glowing figure.

While doing so, he notices a different, very small glowing figure somewhere far away, yet close due to the measurement of the grid. Whatever that means.

He finds the glowing figure after a short amount of time. The glow fades away and reveals the full figure of what appears to be a ravenous fish-beast.

Impulsively, he smashes the beast with the full brunt of the now-spiky and wooden Materia Gauntlet.
