Running Stick Online through a Virtual Machine

I have a copie of Windows 7 Ultimate. When I installed it on my computer I didn't have to insert an activation key, it just skipped that part, so here my question... Does it skip it during the installation as well or do I need a key for that?

I'm not quite sure about Windows 7 packages, but normally it is fine if the virtual machine is installed atleast a month of using the key for the main OS. I'm not sure if it will work since I didn't have a Windows 7 activation in the first place when I created the partition with the Windows 7 main and Windows 7 virtual machine.. Best bet is to probably use a different key.. There are many around.
