Post by: jackel1994 on January 15, 2011, 07:59:25 PM
Just a thread to post sprites i am making to show my development over time :D critique is welcome as i am just starting and would love to hear things to help me out. Not really looking forword to the flamers out there though but thats unavoidable haha! Enjoy guys/girls!

First is a water sword. It is supposed to be the inventory shot of it.

Alright so i wanted to give spriting a new approach with Delicious giving me alittle more of a guide and this is what i came up with, hopefully its alittle more fine tuned. It's supposed to be an old "Dynasty Era Chinese Monk stick"
(http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/9486/monkstick.png) (http://img14.imageshack.us/i/monkstick.png/)
Alright so now is a crude little Slingshot... I admit i think i could've tried alittle harder with this one and will probably resprite late.
(http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/4926/slingshot.png) (http://img502.imageshack.us/i/slingshot.png/)

2 New daggers i tried with this new technique i tried to grips so tell me what you think!
(http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/1676/daggers.png) (http://img707.imageshack.us/i/daggers.png/)
(http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/4946/daggerresprite.png) (http://img266.imageshack.us/i/daggerresprite.png/)

Okay, I think this has been my best attempt yet, tell me what you guys think :D
3 kinds.

Butchers sword

Light Sabre

Dragon Sword PROTOTYPE
(http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/2856/dragonsword.png) (http://img62.imageshack.us/i/dragonsword.png/)

Tried a little animation, not very good but its first one ever so.

Very nice indeed for a first sprite. Nothing really seems flawed to me, keep up the good work.

Save all images as PNGs. JPGs have noticeably inferior quality to the images.

On top of that, you have transparency with PNGs! (a.k.a the background behind the image is visible)

Excuse my ignorance and nitpicking, but is that first axe really your own sprite? It outclasses any other sprite you posted by miles.

Yes it really is mine. I am more comfortable with the program i am using and wanted to make a more complicated sprite.

Also i am using Greenfish.

For most of the weapons, it looks as though you scaled the image rather than zooming in. It's very skewed in comparision to the 1x image.

You should really take more time and care into where you place the pixels. The "Battle Axe" and the latest one, "Axe", is perhaps the worse in terms of that. Try to keep your work clean, limiting your use on colours could help achieve this.

Look at http://www.pixeljoint.com/files/icons/full/whole_set.png for reference. Try to imitate it by zooming close and looking at it carefully as you do your own sword. This is a good way to learn when you're beginning.

Good luck!

You'll definitely achieve something really nice with that attitude towards criticism. You take it like a champ!  :)

could I get permission to edit the battle sword to show you how you could approach it?

Haha, I forgot to mention, but no they're not mine. I hardly ever use anything of mine when I show others reference, it makes me feel to egotistic. :P

Anyways, I did this quickly to show you.

I messed with your design a bit, but I tried more or less to stick with the same colors as in your original. It's not perfect, but maybe you can see what could've been done differently?

I don't expect you to know as of yet how to AA (Anti-Analyze) or know what that means, but perhaps you could take up some pixel tutorials on learning how to do it, it can definitely benefit your technique and the appearence of your work. Also, try shifting color hues when you shade, rather just adjusting the brightness/darkness, which will most definitely make your pixels be more attractive in terms of shading and coloring. I often shift my colors towards purple/blue when I'm making shadows as they are "cool" colors, and I pick warm colors for highlights like yellow.

The handle on that new weapon you made is great, and it's much improved over your last work, however I'm not sure about the green blade(?), it looks a bit jaggedy. Perhaps practice a bit with more generic weapons like long swords/daggers.. ect and move onto things that require more shape and control.

Keep it up! :)

O my that is a beautiful piece of work there... Im completely envious man! And i will do that for sure! Thank you so much!! And the "green" part of that new weapon was supposed to be a type of flag tied to the end of the stick and i made it jagedy to give it that "blowing in the wind" feeling.

I think the battle axe and the monk's staff look sick, the rest are good don't really catch my interest. With he water sword try to show a more transparent quality instead of it looking so opaque. Other than that though, great job!

Wouldn't say that any of your weapon are original like you stated above, though. However, they're still good. Keep practicing, don't stop! I'd like to see you improve on that Battle Axe with the bit of knowledge and skill you've obtained since then.

Problem here is that you have the sword swing behind the stick figure. Try making it start out behind the stick figure (like you have now), but have it move in front at the proper time.

Learning how to animate was such a pain in the ass...

Basically this is what you do.

1) Create a still image of just your weapon
2) Get you stick person set up using a program of choice (I recomend GraphicsGale)
3) Paste your weapon into the frame with your stick person and redraw your stick person over and over moving the sword in increments of distance to make an animation type thing.
4) Everytime you adjust the stick person save the FRAME as a .png
5) repeat steps 3 and 4 until your animation is done
6) Get a picture compiler/Gif maker of your choice. (I would reccomend one but i havnt found a free one yet, i am using a trial one.)
7) PRACTICE UNTIL YOU GET BORED TO TEARS!!! Only key to spriting is practice practice practice!!!

And this is my latest animation!!

Shading comes across and sloppy and the figures posture and limb movement are unnatural.

By shading comes across you means the swing comes across body? If thats what you are referign to i did that to make it look like the sword is chopingacross his body. The blur is sloppy i agree yes, and the posture/movement is what im working on most trying to tighten it up and make it more natural. Thanks for your input, next time just be more specific with your comment, i love to use others inputs for constructive criticism!

I recommend you get a large stick, or fake sword if you have one and swing it properly a couple times. Study the movement of your body and make note of where your limbs end up when your finished swinging. I guarantee your free hand will not be curled up in your pit like that guy's. Also, I am sure if you swing with any remote force at all, your head will bob down and up a bit, and your back and legs surely wouldn't be straight in a 90% manner. People use other muscles than just their arms when they want to kill something.
