Post by: Chaos on November 13, 2009, 08:26:07 PM
Well, first of all, they aren't really 'sprites' at all.  That's more what I'd call computer-generated artwork.  And as far as artwork goes, it's actually not too bad.

EDIT:  Here's the wikipedia 'definition' of a Sprite:

QuoteIn computer graphics, a sprite (also known by other names; see Synonyms below) is a two-dimensional/three-dimensional image or animation that is integrated into a larger scene.

Sprites were originally invented as a method of quickly compositing several images together in two-dimensional video games using special hardware. As computer performance improved, this optimization became unnecessary and the term evolved to refer specifically to the two dimensional images themselves that were integrated into a scene. That is, figures generated by either custom hardware or by software alone were all referred to as sprites. As three-dimensional graphics became more prevalent, the term was used to describe a technique whereby flat images are seamlessly integrated into complicated three-dimensional scenes.

A graphic image that can move within a larger graphic. Animation software that supports sprites enables the designer to develop independent animated images that can then be combined in a larger animation. Typically, each sprite has a set of rules that define how it moves and how it behaves if it bumps into another sprite or a static object.

A matter of semantics, really.

I really like the fire that the dragon is spitting. It has that 'cartoony' feel, with the style of the inner white and yellow.

thanks, i think i will finish the dragon tomorrow, if i have some time.. i'm thinking about doing that entire dragon you see in the picture

Yeh, just do the dragon if you really feel like it. I don't think the entire room will do much justice though.

maybe after i do the dragon i can do the room? perhaps :D

Number 1 pixeling rule: Never save images as .jpg. You'll screw yourself if you don't have backups. I'm not sure what it was that messed up the dog/ghost picture, but it got blurred :(.
Keep at it, the dragon is a good basic sketch. After that you just need to do AA, dithering, and some burning knights ; D

Lol@the back hand. It looks more like a fin or something. You shouldn't rush it, just take it bit by bit.

I really wished you used your work to bump up the "Your Creations" topic.

Any ways your ending dragon is great! Are you using paint with a mouse?

It's not blurred at all, nor is it saved as a .jpg.

Do you have enlarged text on? If you do, that's probably it. Enlarging text enlarges pictures and blurs them too.

You still have to finish the wing?  Looks like you drew only half of it going by the reference picture.

Probably just saved it as a .jpg then resaved it as a .png, anyways since it's just black and white with the blur gray patches, open it in a paint program raise the contrast till it's black and white again.

I'm not sure what you all are talking about. The images he posted seems to have gone thew no lossy compression at all.

Make sure your browser is not zoomed in.

No it's not zoomed in, if you can't see the light gray spots on the ghost/ dog picture then copy and paste it into paint and try to recolor the white to red with the 'fill with color' tool.

you're right, i didn't scale the wing correctly,  made it too small >.< crap

btw the reason the first image is messed up, is in fact that i had first saved it as a jpeg on accident, then saved as a png, i noticed the spots when i was editing the dog.. and realized what caused it.

The host website could've registered the image as a .jpeg, if he hadn't saved it himself. These don't count as pixel art, as they are not refined nor cleaned up - More like a doodle done in MS paint. Though they are neat, none the less. :)

yea i didn't do my best on the dragon, i rushed it a bit.. so some things are off slightly, i may add some stuff tommorow, and again thanks for all the replies :D what happens is i'll start out drawing something, do pretty well, then get lazy and rush the rest, i did it in my art classes too D: i wish i had a scanner, i'd show you some stuff i did in 2d art class... UPDATE: KRATOS DRAWING.. did this one in about 20 min., again all in MSpaint

NOTE: i am not all that great with drawing faces, so bear with me

Not bad at all, just a tadd off on the porportions for the facial features.  ;)
Get gimp though, rather then limiting yourself to Microsoft Paint, which is not an ideal program for digital sketching or painting unless it where to be actual pixel art.

Today I tried a little bit of spriting and here it is:
These are my very first sprites, a sombrero and a sword of some kind.
oh crap these are really small.... err is it possible to make them bigger?
I had them zoomed in 800%...

Just draw them bigger. I think 400 is enough to sprite efficiently with grid on.

If your using MS Paint...use a thumbnail and keep track of your sprite's actual size.

Your ground looks flat from your shadows: the tree shadow should bend assuming that your hill is round. thus, the trunk shadow begins going more S that E, but slowly the leaves shadows lean E, and get lost in the shadow of the hill (only things not dark would be highlights on NW corners).
NSEW meaning the compass directions.

Reopening my old topic instead of starting a new one. Its been a long time since I've done any drawings/sprites and I now have some interest in starting up again. Here is a V3 idea I just sprited today. Not sure if it exactly fits the style but I gave it a shot:

I will most likely be adding more stuff here in the future.
