I always felt that the claim from Mac users that "Mac's don't get virus's" was fairly ignorant. There was a certain amount of truth to that claim back in the day, but it was mainly just because nobody bothered to attack them. As long as people are able to freely develop software, there is always the possibility for malware. You just need to be smart, and take precautions (regardless of what OS you use).

Up until the recent influx of Mac usage, there was nothing to gain from attacking Macs, because no one other than schools used them.  That's like developing a virus for FreeBSD or Open Solaris, compared to Windows users, the gain of the attacks is minimal.  Once Macs became more commonly used, of course people are going to attack them.  No computer is invulnerable to viruses.  Heck, I remember reading about a group recently that gained control of a windows computer through Internet Explorer 9 that was in sandbox mode (supposedly isolated and "super safe" from attack), to the point that they could open up applications, or in their case the common calculator app, and use the computer as desired.  Nothing is impenetrable today, to think otherwise really shows ignorance.

And to be honest all 3 major operating systems have always had big holes in them. Its just a matter of the bad guys finding them and the other people patching them. They are just too complex. And its not necessarily just to the fault of the OS but also the software you run on the OS. It's how many of these things get in. I look at computer security news and it seems like everyday there is some exploit in some piece of software that can mess you up. There is a reason why Windows has a "Patch Tuesday" and why Adobe had to ditch their quarterly updates to something that can get to the exploits quicker.

To add onto this take java for example. Its also been sandboxed for a long time and still is the source of many exploits on systems today.

People just need to be proactive, update, run security software and use the computer safely.
