Title: Looking for Free MMORPGs to Play
Post by: 11clock on May 31, 2010, 11:44:39 AM
Well I've been getting quite bored with Stick Online, and Maple Story pretty much got boring as well. I'm looking for a good free MMORPG game to play over the summer, but I don't really know any good ones out there. Any suggestions on free MMORPGs I should try out?

EDIT: My computer can't support large 3D MMORPGs. Because of this, please only post games that are either 2D, don't require a good graphics card, or both.

Not really mmorpg, but League of Legends is a decent multiplayer game.
I've heard D&D online is good. I've also heard Aika Online is good, though apparently the main player base is korean.

My recommendations are...

Dragonica Online: http://dragonica.thqice.com/ (US server site)
Mabinogi: http://mabinogi.nexon.net/ (US site as well)

Dragonica has extremely fun gameplay compared to most MMO's in my opinion, and Mabinogi is just loaded with features, content, and just a lot of stuff to do compared to your typical MMO that is just "go kill this," etc.

I've heard of Dragonica Online, but never got around to looking at it. I'll go ahead and download it and test it out.

EDIT: Ugh...The downloader is taking a while...

EDIT2: I run the game and it opens up a white screen.

Most mmorpg's have massive downloads...

Since nobody likes the games I play, I can tell you about some I've heard are good. Ijji (http://www.ijji.com/) hosts some pretty interesting looking games, I'm basically just too lazy to download them all D:
I've heard that Huxley (http://huxley.ijji.com/) and Gunz (http://gunz.ijji.com/) are good. But I guess it all depends on what kind of mmorpg you like... point & click, fps, arcade style, w/e. But I have heard quite a few people say Dragonica is good.

Dragonica doesn't seem to work on my computer. When I run it I am greeted with a white screen. :( Anyway to solve this problem?

EDIT: I don't have enough RAM space on my computer. Going to look at Mabinogi now.

I don't think you're going to have space for Mabinogi if you don't have space for Dragonica. Mabinogi is a larger game I think.

But yeah, I've heard great things of Mabinogi.

Looked at Mabinogi's system requirements. Doesn't take up as much RAM space as Dragonica that takes up freaking 2 GB of RAM.

I play Ashen Empires.

Logged into Mabinogi, then got the blue screen. Attempting another try...

EDIT: Again I get the blue screen. Won't be trying again. Looks like my computer's graphics card doesn't support high-quality 3D graphics. :( Any good MMORPGs with either 2D graphics or poor 3d graphics?

EDIT2: What kind of game is that, Seifer?

Maybe you should invest like 1 minute to glance at the system requirements before you just go downloading a bunch of large games? Especially now that your aware your PC can not handle the latter.

I'm sure Ashen Empires would work on your computer, the system requirements are very low. It's very fun, if I had to relate it to another game to paint a picture for you, I'd say Runescape. You go around leveling up skill, weapon, and magic proficiencies and doing various quests. Don't get me wrong, much better than runescape in every possible aspect.

You know, Runescape would actually be a very promising MMO if they stopped making it so damn child like. It was a good game like 6 years ago and than evolved into a game inteded for 8 year olds. Such a shame.

Play Legends. I'm "Hot Soup" or "Frank The Wicked", Pm me on their by typing /t Hot Soup: Blah blah blah. I'll write more about AE in a bit.

EDIT:

Well Luci is sort of right. Infact, I'm impressed that Luci knows the game. Anyhow, the game is really cool in that aren't forced into a specific class. Much like SO, ever level you get stat points, and you allocate them as you wish. Unfortunatly, you can't go as free form as you would like. Every peice of gear requires certain stats. Many require 100 of a certain stat. So while their are no "classes", it is wise to add towards a certain build to wear the best gear. But again, people do make all sorts of funky gear that works great. At max level, if you were to max two of the 4 base stats, you could have the stats of 100, 100, 30, 5. This allows you to wear any sets that are 100's in those stats, and the gear for that specific build. But many people do all sorts of different combo's. All I'm saying is it's very freeform.

Also, every weapon has a skill tied to it. Or rather, every weapon type. Blunt, Polearm, Small blades, Large blades, bows, xbows, etc etc etc. You can max these to use better weapons, and their is no limit to how many you know/max. The same can be said for tradeskills. Their is a plethora of tradeskills. You can make tons of things, and again, no max to how many of these you have.

Thats one thing I really like about AE. It's limitless.

One thing you will no doubt notice though, is that the game will feel rather barren, and very confusing to start. We don't have a mass influx of new players. Thats not to say we dont get new ones every day, but 2-3 new guys that start around the same time as you in a world this big wont be very noticeable. Thankfully, we have chat channels, and their is one we always join, so you can easily converse with others and get help. Also, theirs a town that most everyone hangs out in if their doing nothing, so it's not too bad.

The high levels is where all the action is at. The Endgame. Once you get their, you can join in in all sorts of big hunts, boss hunts etc etc.

Theirs a token store, a "cash shop". But it's not stupid like most games. You can't purchase any gear in it, nor big perks that make your character better than others or anything of the sort. Just.. simple stuff. Teleport stones, so you can get around a bit easier, resets, to say, re-stat your character, race changes, expansions. Unfortunatly, the expansions are somewhat of a neccessity. They really help. Also, though the game is "free", you can get VIP status. This gives you access to a stone that lets you tele to the main hub once an hour, aswell as auto-loot outside of parties and a few other non-consequential perks. Fortunatly, the tokens, which are used to buy this stuff, are traded in the game as a side along form of currency, so if you work hard, you can easily buy up tokens for expansions or what have you.

Theirs parties, Guilds, Guild houses, player houses, sailing, etc etc.

One thing I love is that this game isn't WoW or something. In those games, it felt like I didn't even get to know my fellow guildies. This game is like SO in the sense that the community is smaller, tighter. You get to know the people you play with. You will always see familiar faces, and it feels more social, rather than how WoW or GW often feel like single player games.

Here's a couple screenies.
First one is just me raping some dragons while I type up this message.
Second one is from awhile back, when we used to have to DPS war over some of the bosses. Looks pretty sick though, with all the people waiting to fight over it. Too bad I never got screenies of when we were doing it, but I was always too busy winning/tanking.

Thanks for the info Seifer!

I think I decided on my build. I'll be a mage. Most of my stats will go into intelligence, and my strength will always be around half my intelligence. Every time a level 5 levels I'll add 1 stat to both Dexterity and Constitution. Sound good?

My thoughts exactly. I can only hope he opened all of those windows and that's why it is so cluttered. Otherwise that's just !@#$ed and the creators of this game need to learn about "menus".

Oh, it's fully customizeable. Thats windowed by the way. I can move every single window around, or open and close them. Thats just how I choose to have it. As it's a isometric game and not 3d, higher resolutions don't allow you to see more of the screen. That would give people an edge in pvp. The actual game screen is 800 x600. I'm on a much higher resolution, thus all the black space. I filled up the black space with my inventory, my equipment screen, chats, maps, hotbars, etc etc. Whatever I want to.

You have to update. Go to the launcher, and after you log on, click update. Elsewise, the game is updating as you play, everytime it sees something new, you get a lightning bolt in the corner and it quickly updates, causing lag. As for tips, ask these noobs.

I believe I played the old very laggy version of that game. If I remember correctly they tried making a new version called Rising Sun Online, but eventually the game died. Looks like they brought it back up based on that topic you posted earlier. And they also kept the name. May try it again sometime.

Bump. Well Me, Ryuk, Venomancer and another guy are hosting a version of Fallen Chaos Online. It's completely alright with Packie, and he said we are allowed. Venomancer is the coder, and me and ryuk are the spriters. We constantly give updates with new areas and new weapons/monster/hats. Our forum is www.Fallenchaosrebirth.heavenforum.com Originally we where using Ipbfree, but since thats gone down, we have lost 75% of our community. So come take a look if your interested.

On the subject of free mmorpgs, I've been playing one for a few days called Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online, also known as Megaten. It's an asian MMORPG that's very much like any other sci-fi/fantasy ish game, swords, guns, and magic. However I've been sucked in by the very cool system of Demon pets and Demon Fusions. If I had to relate it to anything, it's like playing pokemon, you go around collecting demons and leveling them, then fusing them together to create different and more powerful ones.

Here's a few screenshots I've taken.

Take a look for yourself. Clearly, in the screenshots you can see that the version Lucifer is playing is in English(didn't look to see if there's a separate Chinese/Japanese version or not).

EDIT: Not sure if that was a 'joke' or not.

I'm not sure about any different version or anything, but yes it's entirely in English, and all the players I've seen speak English. By Asian MMORPG I meant it's made in Japan and is largely influenced by its culture, with their style of video games etc. Large combo attacks, fusion gauges that build up and do shittons of damage, etc.

Here's a few more recent screenshots.

To anyone interested in playing, it starts off a bit silly, basically has you do two tutorials, the beginning "storyline" tutorial, then later the more in depth virtual training room. After that, just follow the main storyline, and it'll teach you how to do most things. The game leaves a lot up for the player to figure out though, and I found that this (http://wiki.aeriagames.com/megaten/index.php?title=Main_Page) wiki helped a lot when deciding on my character, and learning about a few of the more complex details. Also, I highly suggest talking to most of the random NPCs, expecially the "talk about work" chat option, most NPCs have quests or are there to teach you things. It can get a bit repetitive, but idk for some reason I haven't gotten bored yet, I usually do with most MMORPGs. If you have any questions, feel free to whisper me in game, my screen name is Hexfire.

Oh, whoops. I would gauge that there is another version, but whatever. Out of all of the MMORPGs here, this one interests me the most. I'll check it out one day if there's no other possible thing to do and I'm bored out of my skull.  :P

For anyone interested, Lunia is going "3D" in the fall. Granted it's pretty 3D already, but I'm assuming you can change the camera angle... Here's the intro for the new version... "Lunia Z"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST8QUnIMGqA&feature=player_embedded

For anyone who's never played/heard of Lunia, it's a free mmorpg. It's kinda 3D already, but kinda not...lol. You can't turn the camera around.

There will be 16 playable characters once Gaon comes out(dude with the spear) and he will come out when Lunia Z does. (6 or 7 of the characters are free, the rest you have to unlock). No idea why they included Arien(archer) in the video.. highly random... Anyways, just wanted to share. We're estimating this update to be sometime around October, but we don't know for sure. KLunia is already 3D and we get their updates like 3 or 4 months later...

I haven't played Lunia in.. well over a year, but I remember it being fairly fun. I'll have to try it out again, last time I remember there were only three characters to choose from. (To start with, at least, can't say I got far enough to know about any unlockables.) Knight, Healer, and Wizard.

*edit*
OH MY GOD, YOU CAN BE A SLIME O;.

Alright, downloaded and playing as a Healer. Pretty ridiculous how she can wipe the entire screen with her S combo, lmao. I'm level 9 at the moment, haven't put any skill points in, not entirely sure what I want...
Title: Re: Looking for Free MMORPGs to Play
Post by: DarkTrinity on August 19, 2010, 04:57:41 PM
lol. My main characters are Eir(healer), Dark Eir & Arta(engineer) right now... All characters are unlockable without money, unfortunately, they are not all easy to unlock. Lime, Krieg(paladin) & Dacy(puppeteer) are easiest to unlock. The others you need a highly rare drop from one of the raid bosses...
Also, there are ways to get Gcoins for free via surveys/special offers.

A lot has been added. There's the history stages, legends stages(which are useless now that Episode 7 is out, it brings you from lvl60 to 70). Bonus stages 1, 2, & 3. Myth 1, 2, 3, & 4. They also added beginner squares that are helpful for the newbies.
Right now it's possible to get to lvl70 in one day if you know how to do it and have a lot of time on your hands...lol. But once Lunia goes 3D they are changing that so it will take a bit more time to get to 70..

Also if anyone else is interested the websites is http://lunia.ijji.com

And if anyone would like to find me, I'm usually in square 9 and my characters are Miakoda, Mikoda & Myakoda. lol.

Well, the reason it is so easy is because you really only have to do X-5 & X-10 stages to get to 70.(1-5, 1-10, 2-5, 2-10, 3-5, 3-10, etc. Then all of ep7) Granted you wanna do all of episode 1 for the beginner's quest so you can get resurrection stones, 7 day inventory bag, etc...

That and Eir is a healer and not much of an attacker so it usually does take longer to lvl with her.

I guess... I'm not really sure. lol. I'll have to wait til tomorrow to actually find out :<
If camera does not rotate, I do not consider it 3D.
But either way, you can still play in "classic view". You can switch between the 2.

From screenshots and videos, it just looks "more 3D", because there's more depth to the game, you can see more background and etc.

But I'm just guessing right now...
Title: Re: Looking for Free MMORPGs to Play

Is Lunia still using the system where if you want to play a stage non-solo you have to form a party? As opposed to how it once was where it automatically put you with other people who wanted to play that stage?
Title: Re: Looking for Free MMORPGs to Play
Post by: DarkTrinity on September 02, 2010, 06:46:50 PM
Actually they changed that. You have the options to:
-Join quick party(where you auto enter stages with other people, assuming they also used quick join)
-Join stage solo
-Join stage solo & invite through episode chat (if you're in say, episode1, you can shout to everyone in that episode-history and legend-and invite people that way)
-Join a party in party list

Also, the 3D thing isn't actually "3D". Which is what I figured anyways... It's an "enhanced" view. Meaning you can see the background & sky and it LOOKS like it's 3D, but you can't actually rotate the camera around your character, but you can rotate up and down. I'll admit it looks cooler than the classic view, but for me, it's harder to aim my heals in the enhanced view.

I know they used to have it where you had to complete every stage before you could move onto the next one. Then they changed it to where you can advance to staged based on your level. (so if you gain some levels by fishing you can skip some stages) And at that point they only made it a necessity to do levels 1-5, 1-10, 2-5, 2-10, 3-5, 3-10 etc. to get to lvl 70.
Now to get to level 70, you kinda have to to all History stages.(but it's still level based, so if you do level up by fishing, technically you could skip a stage...)

For people who have never played Lunia, this is probably way confusing. haha.

I guess I'm not sure what you mean...?
All of the history stages are part of the plot. Legend is repeating the plot, and those stages are pretty much useless now, if that's what you mean. You never had to do bonus to begin with(except to get good stage equips). Bonus you can do when you hit 65, Myth you can do once you have 1 rebirth and hit 70.

I play S4League. It's an action shooter, in anime style with special skills etc... The thing is, economy is screwed up, and it's really hard to get money, but once you turn Semi-Pro (level 21) it get much easier. Weapons and clothes aren't cheap, so going broke is not an option. If you do, all you can do is get a new char, or buy weapons with real money...

But once you get used to the game, it never gets boring. Awesome content updates, events, modes, etc... That brand new update that includes "Battle Royale" mode is awesome. It's free-for-all in a giant level full of rooms and obstacles.

It's pretty much the best mmo I've played up to now... And it never gets boring to me. But the key is not to play the damn game 24/7, play like 3-4 rounds per day and it can kill an hour or two of your time per day =)

Oh, there is another feature they added that I totally forgot about...
They have squares that link to each episode. So they have a snow/cave square which links to episode 2. If you are in that square, you can also see the episode chat for episode 2 and join a party from there. If you join a stage from the square equivalent to it, you also get a 10% exp bonus, which isn't all that much, but it's better than nothing :P

Wonder King, the Maple Story clone that fixes all of MS's problems, is hosting an event where you can refer friends to the game and you both get rewarded! The referred friend gets a starter kit at level 30 that's worth 900 Gcoins ($9)! If you're interested, post your email and first name. You referring to Wonder King? I've been playing it for a couple months now. I've seen many improvements from Maple Story: Better controls, more skills, PvP, no month-long grinding, smaller and easier to navigate map. The only 2 issues I have with the game are the NPC voices and a few of the quests don't work properly.

I don't know, it just seems like a lesser version of it. Less overall gameplay features, much smaller map, things like that. If I had to choose either game to play, I'd play Maple Story.

EDIT: And in addition, far more interested in Vindictus right now. I'm beginning to clean out all the clap on my computer, defragment, disk cleanup, the works to get this thing working, because I am determined to get on it.

I've been playing Mabinogi...I don't like it very much. The graphics are neat but the gameplay is awful. The combat system is very tedious and not very fun.

Since Dragonica (or DragonSaga, it's new name) is under some changes, I looked around and I came across Ghost Online. It looks good, but I am not so sure I should try it. Who here has played Ghost Online and can you tell me what you think about it?

I was actually thinking of downloading LoTrO, see how it is.

LoTr does better as a f2p. As in Cash shop.

LoTr? Misspelled or abbreviated? When I Google that I get Lord of the Rings results.

Whoops, haven't read the last few pages.

Anyways, still looking for other MMORPGs to play. Because I am able to run Windows on my Mac Mini, I am able to play higher quality games now. Please don't recommend games that have poor connection for my speed is less than average.

I have not recommended a game here yet, so might as well. http://wonderking.ndoorsgames.com/center/default.asp
It may have less features than Maple Story, but the community is way more reliable and the game-play is way more fun. It has some bugs here and there, but the developers are working on it. I also like that the map is much smaller. I don't get lost as often and it doesn't take long to get from one area to another. Also, it's less money-based than Maple Story. Everything is 10 times cheaper, making money not that big of a problem. You still don't want to be poor, though. Oh, and there is not as big of a grind-fest! And there's PvP! :D

EDIT 2: This looks promising. http://fistsoffu.outspark.com/
