Three Rings, the same folks who made Puzzle Pirates, recently released a new game called Spiral Knights. It's a sort of Zelda inspired 4-player co-op top-down dungeon-exploring thing. In any case, it's quite a bit of fun.
An element of progression isn't absent from the game, but it's fairly subtle. There's no actual leveling of your character - based on the quality of the items you've managed to craft and how many levels you've played, you can upgrade to higher tiers, (allowing your character access to increasingly difficult depths/levels) but the game doesn't have the feeling of grinding that many other MMOs do.
The style of the game is amusing. Glowing-eyed, mechanical looking knights compromise the game's community, and everything has a distinct clocktower-esque, steampunk feel. Everything is completely adorable.
The one giant flaw in the game is the energy system. Energy is required to do most things in the game, from entering a level to crafting an item. Once you run out, you can't do anything. Each account has a tank of 100 energy refilled every day, but if you plan on playing more than an hour daily, then you'll have to buy more - either using real money, or using the more difficult, still free route of buying it from people who paid real money. (with the ingame currency, crowns) I understand that Three Rings needs to make money, but it's quite irritating to have one's gameplay session unceremoniously ended when you run out of energy.
So... yeah. Give a shot. Energy system is really annoying, but quite frankly, it's worth dealing with simply because the game is darn fun.
My ingame name is Macrocosm. Send me a friend request and we can play sometime.
www.spiralknights.com
Looks sorta-neat. I'll try it. I used to play games from Three Rings (Bang! Howdy, Puzzle Pirates, ect) So It's definitely worth a shot.
Double Edit: I got it to work. :D
Started to play, my name is Ntertain.
I already have this :D My ingame name is EliteChao
Played this in open beta, it was pretty fun. Big lack of community, not sure how it is now.
My ingame name is Kleeg.
To anyone wondering (+1 bump :D) my in-game name is Infection. I am surprised no-one had taken that name. Elite name for the win!
I just had to update a couple drivers for the game to work. Runs quite smoothly. I love the story, and "The Clockworks" looks insanely epic when walking over it in the starting area.
I have gotten to the main area, called Haven I think. Pretty fun I must say.
All I have to say so far is that it is good, but the checkpoints are way too distant. I completed a couple floors and left, just to figure out that I have to do them all over again because I didn't reach the checkpoint. <.<
OMG I play that game ! :D! my names demonrager pretty cool game add me! :D!

Wait a minute, I remember a Demonrager from SO a long time ago. Coincidence?
Demonrager is one of darks accounts. He usually gives them to his friends though, as I usually see him and Demonrager on at the same time and know he doesn't play on multiple computers. :-\
Hah... I'm sitting here at my city college computer lab, and as I read this topic I look over and someones' playing Spiral Knights. It looks pretty epic, sort of a torchlight-like dungeon crawler level-clearing game? I mention torchlight just because I saw the guy go down an elevator shaft type thing at the end of his level.
Yeah, it's basically that sort of idea. It's pretty simplistic, though, like I said. There's a lot less emphasis on leveling up and getting crazy new skill - however, certain weapons do have special abilities, e.g. this bomb I crafted recently, the Fiery Vaporizer, releases a cloud of mist that sets enemies who walk through it on fire. Pretty useful, though the explosion range is pretty small.
And the elevator idea is pretty interesting. The most difficult bosses and enemies in the game are located deep underground near the core of the planet, and part of the game's story is that the core releases the energy that is such a prevalent concept in the game. It's always amusing to hear the clunk-...-whirrr at the end of each level, but like I said, the most irritating part of the game is that using the elevators costs energy.
Love the game.
I was part of the beta since last year, up until release. I was the first person to find a Sealed Sword, back when they could only be found :P /brag
Still play from time to time, haven't as of much lately. I am Cactuscat ingame, feel free to add me. I might be able to get some new players some basic gear if need be, I have a lot of spare energy I'm not using.
downloading, ill be venuse of course
Hmm niet little game My names Magebolt.. ingame if anyone wants to add me
started yesturday. It seems intresting.
Ingames Crozier.
Anyone know how to get rid of the constant trade chat messages?
@11clock yup that was me got him to lvl 80~ gave to my friend but now I just donated for my friend so he could have his own now his name is: Open_Fire
did you notice that sega is list on their homepage? is this created by sega or is sega a publisher?
Sega is the publisher, I think they came on pretty late into the game because Three Rings didn't mention anything about it until a month or so before release, I believe.
I really love the feel of this game... Very smooth,Graphics are so calm and nice... just a good game, I reall don't mind the Timer thing i dont even get down to 0 sometimes..
i honestly think this is better then 90% of other mmos, the only thing i dont like is the 100 energy thing but even that isnt that bad.
Post here once you guys get to Tier 2. We can do some runs together. :P
Oh, and in case you're unaware what all this Tier business is - open up your character window and click the Progression tab. It tells you what you have to do to move on to the higher tiers.
im really close to tier 2 just need my shield
The energy is only a minor inconvenience for me. I don't really mind it. I only have trouble understanding everything. Like really, I've read so much stuff on the wiki of it, and I still do not know what is up with everything. And I LOVE reading. I like the storyline so far, but as for actual game things in the world, I have no idea on how they work. And even like I said, after reading the wiki.
I barely understand the tier system, but I managed to scape up this: (without the help of the wiki, mind you I do read NPC's dialogue and such)
Each piece of equipment has a star level, and every gate in the Arcade, has 3 tiers. The 1st tier can be used while having any star-leveled equipment, however, to get to tier 2, you need at least star level 2+ equipment. And for tier 3, you have to have tier level 4-5 leveled equipment.
And there is a added restriction on each tier that you have to do a required amount of runs through the gate's levels before you advance to the next tier. Oh, and after every tier, there is a major sub-town like the Arcade.
Correct?
not exactly infection, there isnt a number of times you need to go through an area to get to the next, it is purely about the tier of your armor, wep, cap, and shield.
there is one thing that bothers me alot as of now. that is the fact you cant find the recipes of the armors you want.
second there is no auction house, all items owned by people are sold person to person which is not only cumbersome but also the trade chat clutters up the chat box.
3rd items in generals are just too costly
Actually, Venuse, Infection is right. To get to T2 you have to have finished at least 15 T1 levels and to get to T3 you have to have finished at least 25 T2 levels.
oops :P
There are hidden files added recently labeled "auction", suggesting we'll see an auction house soon - so item and recipe acquisition should become easier soon. Being in an active guild helps a lot though, as most people are willing to share recipes or craft things for others.
one of the reasons i want the recipes is so i can craft them myself and get bonus abilities, aka unique variants, on my stuff.
http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Unique_variant
For unique variants, always craft the 1* version of the eventual item you want. Since those cost so little, you can spam them until you find a great variant, then you just upgrade upwards, as unique variants transfer (if you want them too, that is).
not all armors and weps etc have a level 1 of the evolution path, like the spiral demo path
Ah, yes. I read up on the Unique Variant stuff. Surprisingly, the first thing I crafted got a UV!
Like Venuse said, I do not like how it it is hard to find a recipe you are looking for. They are randomized every day (The ones by Basil I think)
and I had been trying to get a wolver set for who a good amount of time. I had all the materials, energy, and crowns to make them. But no recipe. So I ended up spending around 8k crowns which was more then needed.
Not to mention I owe someone another 2k. Haha. I can pay them back. I have all 2 star equipment, so I just need to get down 8 floors, and I can get to Tier 2.
Edit: I did end up getting the Wolver set. I love it. I also like the Cutter series of weapon, it attacks so fast, and with the damage bonus of the Wolver, it is great.
Right now I'm using a Cutter as well. It really is incredibly fast.
I'm going the Spiral Demo path, and I have to say bombs are amazingly useful. You just place one down, hold up your shield, let the monsters swarm around you, and moments later they're all knocked back by a fiery explosion.
Always check the recipe vendor in the Bazaar in Haven, he has a new set of 0* - 2* recipes everyday, and that is per character. If you make another knight, you'll find different recipes with Vatel.
Basil's recipes are different every time you find him.
Bump, because I started playing again.
Name is Kainerok.
I'm also severely disappointed by the guns in a party environment, especially early game. I tried spamming the stun gun whilst the swordsmen rip through everything, but I'm doing practically nothing. Even if I spam my charge shot, it only affects 1/20 of the mob.

I agree. It feels like guns are only used when you are surrounded by strong mobs and you have little health left and you don't want to risk getting hit.

Yeah, all of the players who main guns solo and have trouble at tough bosses that surround themselves. Not to mention its also expensive because you need different types of guns for the elemental and piercing effects.
I stopped playing because the end of my school year pwned me, but now that it's summer I may get back into it.
This energy system is getting in my way :l
They could at least let us have a different energy bar for each character. I mean, they explain the energy system as a knight suit power source, but why is the power shared across all of your knights? They never explained that one >_>
If you need some spare energy or something, let me know. I don't really play that much anymore, and I'd be glad to give you a little boost or something.
You can't trade Mist Energy, only Crystal Energy. You could, however, sell 100 ME each day and then trade me the crowns, but I think we'd get banned :P
i stopped playing a while ago
Oh no Epicphail - I have about 8000+ CE that is just wasting away on my character, until I decide to start running the market again. :P
Oh. It's alright, it's probably good for my own health that I'm limited anyway :P Just keep it incase you decide to come back and run the economy into the ground :D
Bump.
Played this today with Meiun & Pwnage, I gotta say for a free game it's excellent. That free definitely comes at a cost though (Oh the irony!), having to spend your available gameplay time on new equipment as well creates these annoying situations where you have maxed equipment which and are forced to use it. It's obvious they're out for a profit, but this way of doing so is pretty preferable to most. Infact Meiun and Pwnage pointed out two benefitial aspects of this energy system; A. It's harder than the average MMO for your friends to pass you up when you can't play as much, and B. It's more difficult to get addicted when you are limited in your available time.
Gameplay-wise it's unique and satisfying, the combos are fun and we encountered a decent variety of monsters with different skillsets. You can tell it definitely understands the strategy-emphasizing concept of difficulty, you'll definitely get into chaotic situations that will have you shouting "get the healer first!"
To anyone that plays and/or is interested in playing, Meiun set up a Stick Online guild. We use Teamspeak whenever we're playing, hop on and you'll usually find someone.
BTW Luci, are your IGN's the same as here?
I liked this game before it even came out. /hipster
When it came out I nearly jizzed in my pants. Sega fanboy :3
I'm trying to remember my IGN, I'll tell ya in a second.

Here I am.
EDIT: Boo Yah! Got Ash Tail Coat!
EDIT2: Just added most of you, if you still play please accept me.
Well I just made a character... But I have a feeling I won't be playing the browser version again...
(the only reason I'm doing it in the first place is because Steam is being stupid right now)
I'm Thedarktrinity
(darktrinity is sadly taken) :(
Just made an account, ign Logerbloger
If i run out of energy does that pretty much mean I'm done for the day? Because i only played for like an hour.

Yup, that's it.
I payed for more energy once, and I don't regret that decision. You can trade your energy ( 100 ) for about 5~6k crowns in the market. Pretty usefull.
Btw guys, please come play, I'm ronery :'(
I didn't get on yesterday mainly because I spent 200 energy on a Nightblade :P
Can we plan some Jelly King runs?
Are you all logging on through Steam? or through the browser? Because the browser I lag like every 10 seconds or so making it nearly impossible to attack things....
And Steam for whatever reason is not letting me make an account and it's really frustrating -.-
I tried making one through the client and it says every single name I try is already taken. I even tried something like xxxThedarktrinityxxxadb10191989 and it still said it was taken... >_>
So I tried making one via website and it said DarkTrinity is NOT taken. So I fill everything out and click 'create account' and it asks me to re-enter the capcha to verify I'm human. So I do it again and then it says "account registration failed, please try again later".
I'm logging through Steam.
I'm running it through neither the browser nor Steam. I believe there is an option to download it straight and run it from the desktop, which is what I do.
Browser. I'm lazy.

I started playing before the game was available on Steam. Hence, I play the Desktop version.
But yeah, I'm a Bomber. Rockin' out with my 4 star Master Blast Bomb, etc.

All the cool kids are doing it.

It's a Stone Tortoise honey, it's a badass 4* shield! >:(
Started playing this after seeing it somewhere else(can't remember where.). Pretty fun game for how little I've played of it, my IGN's Enrageddeity.
One thing I can't figure out which would be very beneficial to me is how to sell your energy for Crowns at the Bazaar. I'm unable to, and it's unclear why. I have all the Proto items and virtually nothing, do I need to be at a certain point in the game in order to sell it?

You can only sell "crystal energy" that you purchase with real money. You can't sell energy from your mist tank. Marketing scheme....BOOM!

Unless you're somehow able to sell Mist Energy to players directly, which I don't think is possible.
I'm just going to assume no one really plays this anymore since no one posts in this topic.

You can donate mist to other people in your party while playing if they run out so they can continue down with you.
Ugh. After having some very bad experiences continuously, I'm a bit disgruntled about what set I should go for. I was planning on this-
Divine Veil
Divine Mantle
Gran Faust
Supernova
Nitronome
Crest of Almire
-for the ultimate in AoE high damage across all weapons, with the ability to inflict the most hindering status effect in the game. The Divine Set is for Curse resistance and at 4 points, that only puts one weapon under the curse. I'd be using 3 at once anyway. To those several of you who have high-level equipment, would this be a good plan? From what I gathered from the wiki and forums, there are many ways you can epically screw up your alchemy paths to get horrible combinations of items/items.
I, too, have been playing this game a bit more recently, due to the free time I've had over the break. I'm actually getting some fairly good gear, and I've found a decent guild as well.
And in response to Mystery, as far as I can tell, that seems like a pretty good build to me. The thing is is that no one build can really handle all the different types of monsters well, but each of those weapons seem fairly solid - I myself plan to upgrade my Master Blast Bomb to a Nitronome at some point. And of course, the Crest of Almire is pretty solid too - in fact it's what I'm going for as of now.
