It has been brought to my attention that an E-Mail claiming to contain the beta for S.O3 is being sent to S.O fans.
!This E-Mail contains a virus, and should not be opened!
The E-Mail claims to be from Meiun, and contains a zipped folder.
If you have had this E-Mail, or know anything more about this, reply to this topic accordingly. I'll do my best to inform you of any changes.
I just got it. Deleted it.
I just got it here it is copy and pasted.
Congratulations! You are one of the few lucky donors to test out the Stick-Online V3 Beta! I've chosen you because you seem responsable on the stick-online forums.
Lots more details inside the zip (Readme.txt) Now guys there won't be an announcement as I want to keep this quiet for now, I don't want to have any problems with the other members of the community hassling me. Also beware that it's just a beta test, so don't expect anything spectacular.

Link Removed by me. (Remote file host as we are running low on bandwidth)
The email is from
dustinmiller@hotmail.co.uk
Edit: I can also see all the emails its been sent to, not sure If I should post those.
But from what I can tell it looks the email was sent to- Lingus,Sword(forum?),Zac.
It was sent to ten people total.
You shouldn't paste the link. Some idiots might get to it.
Also, that's NOT Meiun's email. Or at least, I don't think so. Besides,
Quote from: Meiun1) I will almost never contact you by email unless you have contacted me first about something, in which case I will ALWAYS include all previous messages between us on the topic in my response to you.
of the fraudulent emails topic in News applies here somewhat.
Someone msn'd me about that a few hours ago. I told them it was probably a virus and that they shouldn't open it. Their status changed to "busy" and they didn't respond.
!@#$, I opened, downloaded and replied...

Why wasn't this set in the news >.< I checked forum frontpage before I downloaded...
Do you have any anti-virus, Mikk?
I was stupid enough to open and not run it through AVG :L
I would reccomend spybot for an anti-virus program.
(I think its free)
AVG 9.0 or NOD32
Either way someone should send an email to all those who recived it and tell them about it, although from many it may be to late.
It also writes itself into the start menu named :startupstick-online
You can't remove it from add or remove.
I will post how to remove it later when I have removed it :)
Who did this? Stick online known by little and Stick online 3 known by less. Its hast to be some one active now or once was recently.

Because you were one of the few lucky donors, silly! You should probably try downloading it again, I'm sure the virus was a mere coincidence.
I don't know what's funnier, the fact that anyone fell for this, or the choice of some of the "responsable" people it was sent to. No offense intended, ahahahahaaaXD.
Doesn't even sound like Meiun.. lmao...
try avast! it free anti virus i hav it that protect your computer of max capacity
Thank goodness I never got this. I wouldn't have suspected a thing.
I had an old news topic about this earlier as well. Note that I would not send any official email like that from any address that was not ending in @stick-online.com
Good catch Dan. Any information on who it might be that sent out this fake E-mail?
~Looperpuck
'dustinmiller@hotmail.co.uk'
I haven't really dug up emails from you, but I'm pretty sure that your address isn't from .co.uk xD
Anyways, this doesn't mean that it was one of us. It could just mean that someone was googling and found this. They looked around, put an email together, and sent it.
Also, keep in mind that all the emails that Meiun has sent that I'm aware of ends with something like: 'Dustin Miller, aka Meiun.'

Enough about spreading the word, more about how to get rid of it. If the creator of the virus was smart, they would've blocked all anti-virus sites, right?

Not necessarily. If the virus is already in your computer, it may already be too late for a program to save you.(depends on what the virus is like, of course, and I have no intention of finding out)But it would be smart to do that.
Also, I can confirm that's not Meiun's e-mail.(Derp derp derp, of course it isn't, but people fell for it somehow.)
Which virus is sent out? And what kind of scumbag would bother doing this?
Anyways, here is a solution...
Firstly, you might want to download AntiMalware - http://www.antimalwarenow.com/ - It's free and not only does it detect virus's but it also completely wipes it off your computer. I used this when I had a rogue virus which didn't allow me to open .exe files.
Once you install the program, go to the updates tab and click "Check for updates". Once the software updates, then go to the scanner tab and click "scan". Oddly it detected 560+ virus's on my computer, and it deleted them all! The scan could take several to thirty minutes depending on the amount of files you have. The program will search through everything.
When it finish's, there should be an option that allows you to delete all the virus's listed. After it deletes them, you will get a word document or a seperate file that shows all the files that have been deleted and why. Afterwards, it will promt you to restart your computer, so do so.
This tool is genious, and it helped me a great deal. ;)

While that is plausible, I doubt it. Sure, someone could've done that, but it would be much smarter to use a bigger game so to get more people with the virus.
His address is obviously NOT from .co.uk. :P
I can also confirm that Meiun's e-mails end like that(something along that line)

I also was just sent this fraud email...but I didn't open it because it sounded fake. I might do a background check and found out this IP for all of you...get back later.

This is illegal, as well all know, and I'm wondering if it's even possible to press charges on these kinds of criminals? I mean, if we knew who it was do they get away with doing something this rediculious? I'm guessing it's highly uncommon that one will actually go through the trouble of getting this young lad a charge, but there has to be a punishment that does not only relate with getting banned from the Stick-online game and community since this is far more than trying to get an unfair advantage... This immature little tard wants to harm the members in some way or another. Not saying any of us would actually do this, but has there even been any cases where administrators or members who were victomized actually took legal action against these type of morons in such a community like this?

I'm pretty sure it's happened. I don't know if there were, but there HAS to be one.
Delicious wellcome to the the bad side internet. Yes this is illegal but its not easy to cech people who do this. What he/she did is called a phishing attack. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing
As i said in the past the person more likely just trying to infect people just to get money from some one else.
I would reccomend contecting the United States Deparment of Justice.
http://www.justice.gov/criminal/cybercrime/reporting.htm
And possibly contacting your local FBI office.
I wouldn't even worry about it, this kind of stuff happens all the time. be thankful that only a few people where attacked, and lets all be a little bit vigilant from this day forth.

Exactly it happens all the time, and it needs to stop.
Every develops a hatred of the community for whatever reason needs to learn this isn't their playground.
If we never do anything about people will always think they can get away with it.
Has anyone confirmed the existence of a virus in this with any antivirus software? Scanning the original files themselves do not seem to show any threat of a virus (based on scans by avast, Windows Defender, Housecall, and a couple others). However, I would not doubt that infection perhaps only occurs after you run the file. If anyone who has done so or got any virus alerts please let me know.
All people that got it can see the other people that the email had been sent to. I suggest as many of you people that the email was sent to get together and create a list of all the people that each of you have on your MSN buddy lists. I'd imagine that the sender would most likely be buddies with all of you (possibly not, but worth a shot). Could at the least narrow it down if he did indeed use a list of people on his MSN.

Back in the day when the actual SO website was hacked...charges of some sort were pressed if I am not mistaken. By Meiun and Scotty. I'm sure some sort of action will be taken if the culprit is caught...but tracking email is a nuisance. I guess a place to start would be to see who got sent the emails and see if they all might be linked to suspects...because since not everybody got it there people were obviously hand-picked.
As far as the file. I've actually gone ahead an ran it under a controlled environment, and so far as I can tell, the aim of the program is to crash the computer. I'm running further checks to see if a virus was in fact installed on my computer, but so far, I haven't discovered anything that would classify it as a virus. It was built using Game Maker, that much is certain. In fact, if one were to stumble upon it, at first glance, it could almost look as though a legitimate Stick Online client. As far actual damages done, well past the initial attempt of it trying to crash your computer, I can't determine any further damages done at the moment.
Quote from: Scotty on November 30, 2009, 02:14:29 AM
There was never any legal action taken against anyone for an attack, and quite frankly, there will never be any legal action taken. Just think of how many people have attempted to phish passwords for myspace in the past. Nothing can be done with this, except taking personal action against the culprit, who will likely never be caught. It also ties into S.O. being an amateur developer project with no patent. There has never been a patent on Stick Online, therefor legal action is that much harder should any of the staff pursue any legal action for anything past, present, or future.

Others have tried.

I don't have an msn, so it doesn't seem like thats a possibility.
I knew that wasn't much of a possibility, especially when you consider that directly beneath your avatar, there is a mail icon (unless you chosen not to display it) that will allow others to email you. Not exactly hard to get someone's e-mail address now-a-days!

Haha, just make Meiun's donor address safe, then if it appears unsafe, never open the E-mail. :)
Just telling you guys, anyone with basic coding knowledge could send a fake email from any address. I could send you an email from (http://www.stick-online.com/images/email.png) if I want to, for example.
But the guy that sent this e-mail probably doesn't have much coding knowledge, just a newb that want's attention.
There are generaly ways to verify senders. But this is why I also stated that you should never download anything SO related from a site other than this one, or from an attachment.

Guys. This forum has a PM system.
Meiun, maybe you should make that more visible? New people won't have a clue about security issues like these. Maybe have a topic on security to go with 'What is Stick Online?' and 'How to access donor server'?
