Title: How is everyone doing?
Post by: Freeforall on January 07, 2013, 10:00:31 PM
Been a while since I have seen such a general discussion.
In general, how are things going for you guys?

Things have been going fairly well for me. I am getting a truck soon, along with a permit. (I'm a little late on the permit, I will need my license soon.) My dad and I recently took the motherboard out of my gaming computer and installed it into a new case. We had fun doing it, and it worked out very well. I went to South Padre island over Christmas break, which was pretty fun. My cousin showed me a new cartoon on Youtube called 'HellBenders'. (Check it out if you haven't, it's disturbingly hilarious.) Grades in school are good; not failing any classes. I completely forgot to mention, I am a sophomore now. It seems so long ago that I started playing around on here. I believe it was 4th grade when I found out about this game, 5th when I got addicted to it, haha.

TL;DR - Things are going well, tried some new things, doing good in school, happy memories.

What about you guys? Anything new or exciting in your lives?

Wellp, I recently got hired from a temp to a full time employee working at Fantasy Flight Games(means I also got a raise), racking up that dough! Also celebrated 6 years with my boyfriend in October. Currently not in school, still not sure what to go for :/ Also started playing WoW, yup... I'm a Warcrack addict.. :>
And don't feel too bad, I'm 23 and still have my permit. lol.

Nothing too exciting beyond that, but I'm doing good.

Well that's awesome :D I'm not even sure where I want to work or what I want to do. Something with computers, that is for sure. I built the lab computer at our school, so I guess that's a head start. (Very small school, not hard to get permission for stuff like this. And I mean VERY small. 180 kids PK-12)

I miss all my Stick Online friends..  :(

Well today I celebrated my 10 month anniversary with my girlfriend and going on strong.  ;) I'm a junior in high school and I am doing wrestling right now. It's my first year experiencing it, and I suck lol. On the other hand it's fun and I'm enjoying wrestling with my friends. My grades are good and school is as average as can be. I turn 18 in September so I have been trying to look for a car with my dad.. That is going bad but eh, hopefully it gets better. Hopefully Stick Online v3 comes out soon because I miss playing with everyone and having fun times leveling up and discovering new things! Seems to be happening in real life now though! Thinking of taking accounting in college, not sure which one I am going to go to though..

It's been a while.

I've gotten involved with my church far more than I had been previously. I've been playing the drums for 3 years now, and organize the band as a whole with song selections and dynamics and such. I've also started guitar 2 weeks ago, we'll see where that goes. It seems way easier than piano or violin with drum experience under my belt.

Academically, wise, I've challenged myself this junior year in high school and I've started off strong...Trying to keep that up for the rest of the year, haha. I still have yet to organize my educational future though. I had strongly considered the Art Institute for a degree in graphic design, but I've heard that the actual education is in bad proportion to the costs of the school...

The past winter break was filled with such wonderful experiences that by the end of it all, I've reassessed who my true friends were and have come to know who I want to be as a person.

Life is going pretty swell right now. I graduated from Highschool a year or so back after screwing up and having to return for a semester, and I've been taking classes at my community college ever since then. I started out slow, worried I'd crash like I did during Highschool, and I've slowly but surely built up a built up enough confidence to attend full-time. I still haven't decided what I'm doing, I've been taking mostly Math, History, & Computer Science, however I've failed more than half of my CS Classes so I think I've come to the conclusion that it's probably not my thing... I'm not sure yet.

I've had to move around a bit. I was living in an apartment with my sister for a couple years, but the rent went up another $200 on us and we had to find somewhere else, alas the rent here is so damn high here we couldn't find anything suitable for two people under 1300/mo. My Mom agreed to let us live with her for a while until we figure out what we're doing, and I'm actually spending a month up in the mountains with my Grandparents at the moment.

I got my first official job, rather than random work for neighbor's, I'm working part time for my dad. He runs a Hydroseeding & Erosion Control company, and I've worked in the field with him sporadically in the past, but now I'm working on a regular schedule in his office. It feels nice to have a stable job and a bank account.

My hobby is still gaming, mostly League of Legends these days. I'm always making an effort to better myself, both in skill as well as personality. It's been interesting to witness the personality traits that can make or break teams in League, and to try and better myself and work towards being an enjoyable person to play with. There's an unofficial tournament for low-elo teams coming up, I've been gathering some SO peeps together to see how we do. Should be fun!

Everyone sounds like they are doing pretty well =)

And @Luci, I have done work for neighbors before, but I haven't got an 'official' job yet. I really don't know what to look for. I'll probably be living with my parents for a while, or atleast until I find a place to stay and work. (There isn't any work around here, believe me.) When you go through elementary and middle school, you kinda blow off the whole, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" thinking that you have a LONG time until the day that decision comes, but it's approaching very quickly for me. Time really does fly by fast.

BDX!! YOU ARE ALIVE!

I'm doing fine I suppose, 21 now as my birthday a few days ago told you all. I got a decent job working as an over glorified babysitter for the government of Canada. I take care of what Americans would call "children of the state". Highly confidential stuff I tell you, it's ridiculous. I stopped going to university after one semester, I just can't stand it. All the learning and the work and the learning. T_T Recently built my own gaming computer, cost a pretty penny at around 3000+ in total for everything. Uhh, I also bought a 2012 Camaro a month or so ago. Image here. (http://sphotos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/39286_10151160769733743_753935737_n.jpg) The female population of society is still tough as ever. Instantaneous friendzone for nice guys, *fistpump*. I'll crack it one day, prove you all wrong! I spend a lot of my spare time playing League of Legends, my names St Arkyn, feel free to add me. Recently got into MtG, holy crap does that game make money disappear fast, but at least you generally make it all back in card value.

I do wish that we could all have a day to meet up and hang out. Go skiing or something. Nothing involving water though, I'm kinda aquaphobic.

I'm with you on all these. I had a job that sounds very similar until I started college, and yeah ridiculous describes it well. I'm thinking about being done with college after this year, just doesn't feel like what I really want to do. Really considering doing four years in the army, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Currently going to a local college for Criminal Justice, was really the only program that sounded interesting. Hating it as much as I hated highschool, which is quite a bit. Spending most of my time these days doing school work, looking for a job, playing video games, and learning how to ski again. Sadly despite living in Vermont, the snow seems like its going to be gone fairly soon.

Good to see everyone else is doing well though.

Oh, I should probably add that I *was* in community college and got my AA degree/Liberal arts(Aka generals). And then stopped going because I still didn't figure out a major I'm interested in.

I considered it, but so does everyone else under the son. It's a competitive field apparently. Plus it usually leads to a job in advertising. (I have 2 cousins that went for graphic design, though different fields in it) Also, I'm not so sure that I want to have art as my job, I don't really want to make things that other people want me to make. Plus I continuously hear the saying "do what you're good at, not what you love". And therein lies another problem, I have no idea what I'm good at :/

On a more serious note, apologies. I must protest. Doing what you're good at makes no sense to me personally, it all comes down to a simple question really, what is important? What do you desire? If it's money, then by all means go do what you're good at, but that is just messed up, because in total honesty all you're doing is getting stuck in a never ending circle of misery. Consider this "you'll be doing things you don't like doing, in order to go on living, that is to go on doing things you don't like doing. Which is stupid" - Allan Watts.

Point is, if you really love something, make it your job, because it will make much more sense and you'll eventually become a master at what you do (I'll get to that) because loving what you do is what drives you to be better at it.

Now, I'm not gonna lie, but there is always one thing, just ONE thing that you're better at than most people (but then again that same quote applies to about 7 billion people so...) never play by someone else's rules, and never be limited, never accept someone else's way of thinking, define your own. Sure it might not all work out but in the end, can you really say that you wasted any moment pursing your dreams?

Welcome back zro.
Glad to hear everyone (at least that has responded) is doing ok.

Well, yeah I've got soo much going on with my life. I've got university in less than a year, last year of high school right now. Finishing with around a 3.66-3.75 gpa-ish. I've going to try to be a studio art major, with emphasis on graphic arts. So I've been making pixel art almost every day it seems like, trying to get really good. I kind of gave up video games and computer games, with the mild exception when I play nintendo with my family (I played Banjo Twoie with my little bro last weekend, shame on me). I've got guitar classes as school and am practicing every day. Been playing guitar for about 3 years now. I'm not even that good cause I haven't put that much effort into it. Just filled out the fafsa last week, and my application to University of New Mexico  was accepted. So that's likely where I will be going for (at least) the next two years. I've got to sign up for another ACT (didn't do THAT well on my first one, almost a year ago- a 25). And I failed both of my AP-college tests (US History and Psychology), so I only have 1 advanced course this year. Hopefully I can get credit for one University class if I pass the AP test in May.
But to sum it up, a lot of school, a lot of art, and no fun. It's not too bad though
And heres the graphic art stuff I was talking about earlier. Finished this one today: http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/75470.htm this one two weeks ago http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/75155.htm and a wip that I haven't finished yet http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15676

As for the zro-Scotty/DT debate (if you could even call it that), I would have to side with zro. If you like something enough, then just put in the extra work to become good at that. See, that's what I plan on doing with my life. I am only half-decent at art right now, but if I go to university and practice every day until then, I am sure I will be at a professional level. Might get stuck at creating flyers and boring stuff like that, but so be it; somebody has to do that, right? Nobody has the perfect job. At least I will be having a little fun doing something mundane and tedious, instead of hating to do that mundane, tedious occupation.

Well mostly the reason I say that is because I love art, but if art becomes my job and I end up doing art for other people and whatnot then eventually I won't love it. On the other end if I make art that I like and try to sell it, that would also be an awful job to have. I'm not worried about being rich or anything, but yea a steady paycheck is something I would like. So in the case of art, I think doing what I love isn't a good option for me.
In the case of my sister, I lean towards your opinion. She loves animals, and she got a job working with and training animals and is currently living in Florida and she loves her job.
Guess it all depends on the thing you love doing, lol.

you make what you are good at your job so you are financially secure enough to continue doing what you love as a hobby.

its nice to think that you can do what you love but unless you're a !@#$ing legend or what you love makes bank its hard to support yourself.

and in a lot of cases making what you love your profession can ruin that, its the same for a lot of people who became professional gamers or something becuase they get stressed the !@#$ out trying to maintain their skill and it ruins the experience for them

I think DT pretty much covers it. You don't usually get lucky enough to make a living doing what you love. And if you do end up with a paying job doing what you love, you'll eventually do it so much, or in a way that becomes tedious, that you no longer really love it, and sometimes you come to hate it. So really, you should do what you are good at, what you are able to make money at, but also make sure that it doesn't consume so much of your life that you don't have time for what you love.

To add to that, what you love might not be something that's even marketable. What you love could be your family or friends or sitting on a rock all day. You can't make money from those intangible things. But you do still need to balance your life so that you spend time with them.

That's basically the gist of my life right now. Without going into detail I've been working on the balance of making money and being extremely stressed out at work, and sorting out my personal life. I'm optomistic about the future and I know that things will work out. As long as we can keep that mindset we can always be happy no matter what is going on around us.

I'm doing pretty great. I'm in second year university now, at the University of Waterloo. I was originally in a math/business program, but I realized I didn't like business and decided to try majoring in computer science and pure math, but now I settled on pure math and statistics. I found I really love math, like proofs and stuff (On the off chance any other pure math majors are here, I'm taking smooth manifold theory and complex analysis, and some other stuff). That's about it.

On balance, I'm doing all right. I'm a senior in high school. Got a good score on the SAT and got into the colleges I applied to (Liberty, Neumont, and Baylor). The problem is they're all private schools, which means I may have trouble paying for them. I've got my Dad's GI bill benefits (he never used his), but there's a limit to how much they'll pay for a public school. They pay the whole thing for in-state public tuition. I'm currently applying to UT Dallas because I forgot to apply to any state colleges when I did the initial rounds of applications in January. An oversight. High school's beating me over the head right now because I've got a D in three classes and an F in another. Why? I didn't give a rip about my homework for about a month. That tends to sink you fast.

On an unrelated note, in all honesty I've been doing pretty terrible lately. Let's just say I sympathize with Forum.

High school's beating me over the head right now because I've got a D in three classes and an F in another. Why? I didn't give a rip about my homework for about a month. That tends to sink you fast.

brah i'm a senior in highschool too. all that stress i've built up in ap classes and shit is finally getting to me. haven't turned in an assignment in months.

i'm applying to colleges too. shits expensive, hope i get some great scholarships or i'll be getting !@#$ed by debt for years to come.

Quote from: Lingus on January 21, 2013, 06:01:02 PMThat's basically the gist of my life right now. Without going into detail I've been working on the balance of making money and being extremely stressed out at work, and sorting out my personal life. I'm optomistic about the future and I know that things will work out. As long as we can keep that mindset we can always be happy no matter what is going on around us.
I just reread this and realized it was so vague and somewhat depressing that it made it sound like something bad happened to me. Nothing bad has happened, just the balance of my life has been shifting towards working extremely hard to keep "my" business running (it's really my mom's business, but I have a department that I run that is separate from what the rest of the company does). I had to lay off 2 people in my department, which means we have basically been cut in half in terms of work force, but we still have the same amount (if not more) work to do. With that in mind, the two of us that are left are doing considerably well, which is part of the reason why we laid of the other two people (they weren't quite carrying their load).

Meanwhile, after spending the second year of our marriage living at my mom's house (we were there for a little over a year), my wife and I finally "gave up" on trying to buy a house and moved into a 2 bedroom apartment. We're still sort of looking, but the real estate market is just ridiculous.

So yea, we're just trying to stay positive and in between working our asses off, making room for fun and what not (such as getting an annual pass to Disneyland and going on a 2 week camping trip.)

Hope everyone else has been doing well.

well im still working at walmart as a cartpusher, been thinking about trying to get a new car but car prices are just silly. work keeps getting sillier since we are constantly understaffed and they keep trying to get us to perform other peoples jobs which ends up preventing us from doing our main job of getting carts and doing carry-outs, like today me and my coworker were painting stuff. as soon as we tried to start painting here they come asking us to get shelving for people, or like how they were trying to get my coworker to do maintenance this morning even though they had a maintenance woman there to do the job.

Ouch, seems like ya'll are working pretty hard. I'm in a good place right now, working two low-stress part time jobs, one on monday-thursday in a warehouse for about three hours, and the other on fridays for about seven hours doing data entry. I'm also taking three classes at my community college, two history and one philosophy. My community college is incredibly cheap, $46/unit and about $44 for health and transportation services, including free bus transportation anywhere throughout the city. It's pretty expensive to live here though, but my mom is still letting myself and my sister bum around at her apartment because she's pretty awesome like that, :).

I'm still rather lost on what exactly I'm doing/where I'm going, just slowly but surely taking more classes and completing my general ed/igetc requirements. I'm very interested in history at the moment, but I also love math but I haven't done very well at it, and I also really want to take some political science classes but... wait I really need to take some intro earth sciences and physics classes too! Agh! I have a ton of possibilities right now and I'm not being pressured too much to make a decision, so I feel pretty fortunate.

Post by: Jackabomb on September 18, 2013, 05:06:27 PM
Update: We moved from Korea to Pennsylvania and now live in Carlisle. It's been rough and it's been fun. I enrolled full-time at a local community college on Dad's GI-Bill because I had to do something. I'm taking Intro Chemistry(+ a Lab), Intro Programming, Psychology, and Pre-Cal. The first two are too easy for me. Not to be arrogant, but both of them are below the level of knowledge I've already got. The Chemistry class is on the level of the class I took in tenth grade. And the programming class???

Well:
[rant]The course description said "Intended for those with no prior programming experience." And, like an idiot, I figured it would be okay. After all, I've been hobby-programming since tenth grade! I've got experience! Dear God, if I had only know that it really meant "no programming experience." It is for babies. It is seriously for computer-babies. It is a class you give a middle schooler so they won't be stupid when you go to teach them real programming in a few years. On day one, they introduced us to this (http://www.alice.org/index.php) graphical programming program. It's a little like Game Maker. In fact, I'd say it's on the same level as GM's icon interfaces. Let me be clear: I harbor no resentment against GM or like programs. But I stopped using GM's icons about a month after I started with it. I started the summer before seventh grade. I'm now in my first year of college. I haven't needed something this easy in six years. And I left GM behind completely in ninth grade. After explaining the windows of the interface and how to click from one section of interface to highlight another the tutorial literally said this, and I quote: "If you are uncomfortable with any of these operations, feel free to pause the video and go over it again, or consult your instructor."[/rant]

Why can't I get out of the class you ask? Good question! Because it's a prerequisite for taking C, which actually would challenge me. Apparently the 5 I got in AP Computer Science (read: AP Computer Java) without breaking a sweat doesn't count for beans.
On the upside, they treat me like Einstein or Hawking in there. Whenever our professor says something that doesn't make sense or gives us an assignment they don't get, all 5 people around me just turn and look at my screen as surreptitiously as they can.
Actually, most of my AP credits don't count here. I took 2 years of AP History classes and got 1 year's worth of credit. I took 2 years worth of AP English (APEN and AP World Lit) and got 1 semester worth of credit. And took AP physics C and got no credit at all. All total, I took 6 year-long AP courses and got nine semester-hours. 36 != 9
QuoteAgh! I have a ton of possibilities right now and I'm not being pressured too much to make a decision, so I feel pretty fortunate.
^This, all the way. So many potentially awesome lives to live! How to choose one? So many potentially non-awesome lives! Also, a lot of flat-out sucky ones! How to avoid them all?

Thanks for bumping this thread! Hopefully this will boost activity.
Did you get 4s and 5s on those AP tests? Cause over here at UNM (in Albuquerque), most 4s get you out of a 101, and 5s get you out of a 102 or 201. I ended up with a 4 on the AP English Language and it didn't amount to anything because I had a good English ACT score. Lucky for you, you actually got credit for your stuff. I didn't do that well on my AP World/US History classes and so it was pretty much a waste of 160 bucks. But I am to blame, not the system :p
Wow Korea, eh? South I presume? How was that?

My classes are pretty good this semester. I too am starting my first year of University. I've got College Algebra (holy crap this is the easiest thing I have ever done. We are learning how to do slope and absolute values... This is, like, 8th grade stuff. I was doing Calculus last year, ugh...), Environmental Science (which is quite interesting), English 102, Internet Memes and Digital Media (mix of sociology, graphic art, and culture), Photography, and Electronic Art. I am living on campus, which saves a lot of commuting time and is pretty fun, I guess. Electronic Art is pretty good so far- it definitely contains the most valuable information (learning how to code HTML/CSS, sound editing with Adobe SoundBooth, that kind of stuff).

I'm in my first year of college. I made sure to pick the best professors, and I like all of them.

My College Skills class is one of my easier classes, but it is by far my busiest class. The majority of my homework comes from this class alone. The professor teaches us things in clever and fun ways, such as using a ring-toss game to teach a lesson on risk, and she knows what she is doing.

My Public Speaking class is one of my two classes that assigns a lot of reading. The class is pretty strait forward, and there are PowerPoint notes. Unfortunately, they don't cover up everything, so reading the textbook is necessary. The speeches are fun. I received a 91% on my first speech! The professor is very nice and helpful.

My Chemistry class is my second busiest class. The class itself can be confusing at times, but it makes more sense as you move along. The teacher is very laid back.
The lab sucks. It is either very boring or very tedious. The lab instructor is a nice old lady, though.

My Calculus class is by far my easiest class. I haven't done an ounce of homework (which is not graded) and I'm getting 100% on the quizzes. I received a 96% on the first test. I took Honors Calculus during my senior high school year, so it's mainly easy because I already know the material. The professor reminds me of Steve from Blues Clues, and he looks kind of like an older me. He is very good at explaining things.

My Psychology class is my hardest class, and my other of the two classes that assigns a lot of reading. The class is fun, though. The professor is very funny and interesting.

I felt the same way about Game maker until I purchased the Game Maker Studio: Master Edition. One program runs on all systems including mobile, and instead of the Classic Game Maker interperator it uses a full compiler so it's fairly fast also.
I'd highly reccommend you look at Game Maker Studio if you haven't seen it yet.

Back on topic.

My life is pretty mundane compared to all of yours.
Normal professors whom I have no opinion about.
Normal school which I have no opinion about.
Here we don't have colleges which do everything and such.
We do schooling from the day we turn five 'till the end of the school year when we're 18. Then we go to university, no college inbetween, this means we don't get an extra layer of 'general education' and go straight from basic to specialized.
Doing A levels and whatnot (We do Cambridge System instead of the US SATs) and applying for scholarships and stuff, not particularly interesting.

Ha wow, seems like you're all busy with lots of classes!

I actually took a leave of absence from mine for a year. I decided I was gonna get my EMT certification and decide if I wanted to keep going towards med school or instead have my end goal to be a licensed paramedic. Plus it was at the point where I could barely afford to go to my local college, kept getting screwed on financial aid so there's that too.

I got my old job back doing personal care for a kid with disabilities. Woooooooooooooo. /sarcasm
But at least its money which I always seem to be in desperate need of.

Other than that I've just been going to the gym and doing a lot of hiking, thinking about finally doing Mt. Washington with some friends next weekend but we'll see.

Good to see everyone is enjoying classes and what not.

What's the difference between college and university? I thought they were the same thing.
Mundane compared to me?! Hah! I'm an unemployed live-with-my-parents 18 year-old (+11 days) kid going to college so I can maintain my dependent status for three more years. That's a military thing. When you turn 18, you have to turn in your ID. In so doing you lose your base access privileges, your health insurance, and if your parents live on post you have to leave. You also don't get to come with them if they go overseas again. If I'm a full-time student though, which I am, I don't have to do that until I'm 21. I have no idea what I want to do. I'm only going to this community college because I had to do something, and it wasn't a completely awful thing.
I might go back to GM if I get an urge to start making games and I can't figure out how, but I basically fell in love with Java and text-programming in tenth grade. I was learning then, but during the second semester they started up with UIL CS and Robotics, both of which I was involved in. That's where they compete against other high schools and go to competitions. I was pretty good, and I loved being on my team. Programming in a group like that with challenges to solve was probably the most fun I've ever had in programming. To me, GM represents conquered territory. I doubt I'd ever take a step back.

@11Clock and Crozier:
Pre-Cal has to be my favorite class. It's a repeat since I took pre-cal last year in high school. But I am learning new things most every class which is something none of the other three (four, if you count ChemLab) can boast. I love my professor, he's a younger guy, but his enthusiasm is amazing. He's one of those eccentric teachers who uses the same phrases over and over again, twitches his head (yes he does this), writes across the board like lightning, and makes you like the class because he treats every class period like he's being given a chance to build a castle.
Chemistry and ChemLab haven't taught me anything new, and from skimming the book I doubt they will. Still I like ChemLab because I get to wear goggles, play with chemicals (even if I do have to follow silly rules like "don't mix two chemicals just to see what will happen"), and I can hum "I'm doing science" from Still Alive whenever I want. Because I am.
I got 4's and 5's on most. 3's on two or three. And a 2 on the mechanics section of the physics exam. But this school only looks for a three or better, so still. I'm a bit disappointed I'll need to do all that essay-writing over again. I feel like all the writing progress I made in AP Lit goes to waste if I don't take a higher-level course.

@Crozier:
Yes, South Korea. I'm an army brat, so that's actually the third time I've lived there. We were stationed at Yongsan in Seoul. Every time we've been there was for two years. 2*3=6 years. Which is actually more aggregate time than I've spent anywhere else. The runner up is Fort Leavenworth, KS with 4 years, also spread out in tours of two years each. If I have a home, I suppose that's it.
Korea was a lot of fun, although I didn't think so when I first arrived. I lived on base, so my exposure to the culture wasn't as much as those who live fully immersed in it. Nevertheless, there are a lot of differences. Enumerating them would be exhaustive and this post is getting long enough as it is. If you're curious about it, send me a PM, I'd be glad to tell you about it. I had a lot of very close friends there, more and closer than I've ever had before so leaving has been hard.

[EDIT]Titan, you ninja:
EMT? Nice! They've got a nursing program and an EMT program at HACC. They're the only competitive programs here, so I think of them as the "best and the brightest." What factors play into your decision RE: med school vs. paramedic?
I've never worked a day in my life. I doubt I'll go for a job yet, but sooner or later I'll have to. I've been considering the military. since its world is already familiar to me. But I don't know yet.

What's all this about id's, military, health insurance and being exiled?
I live in a peaceful isolated country in the middle of the pacific ocean, so we don't
have mandatory military service(we have next to no military as we have no enemies or whatnot)
and all healthcare is free. What do you mean about living on a base?
Here instead of college we do more years of schooling than the US so college is
kind of obselete. Our universities are more specialized insitutions where you go to
courses and lectures, then build up creditsand write a thesis.
A bachelor's degree is typically 3 years, a masters degree 6 and a doctorate 7 depending on
how well you perform

How's tuition getting paid?  I know in the military once an active duty member gets 10 years on the books, they can transfer their Montgomery GI Bill over to a dependent.  Unless you have siblings your parents prefer over you, assuming they have no interest at this point in pursuing a college education if they haven't already, are they putting you through college with their GI Bill?

@Jackabomb- I believe anyone not from North America calls high school college. University means the same thing, no matter where you are, but college can either mean North American (and some other places) University, or it could be the rest of the world's high school. Don't quote me on that, though.

The post-9/11 bill is different from the Montgomery bill in ways I won't claim to understand. That said...In short, yes. In long, Dad's a career officer who already had a Masters in Psychology when he joined the Army. I'm the oldest (of nine) so at the moment, nobody has an interest in pursuing a college education. Dad split his GI Bill in half between me and my next-younger brother, Cody.

Yeah, I always get the post 9/11 vs the traditional mixed up in what they're called.  If he split the post between you and a sibling, that'll be enough to put the both of you through two years.  I don't know the specifics about transferring it to a dependent, as I neither did ten years, nor have I met any of my children.

Well, mine is about half that for HACC. And most public universities in the States that I know of run about that much. But those are undergraduate prices (first four years). It'll get you a Bachelor's Degree when you finish.  But he's talking about medical school, which is Graduate-level work. What's more he's talking about the total cost for all 4 years. When he gets through with it, he'd have a Medical Doctorate and (I think) license to practice medicine. I think it's a little more complex than that, though. From what I've heard, 200k debt for the whole 4 years is not unusual for doctors.

update on me!

I've been working full time for my Dad's construction company for roughly a year and a half now. I started off entering invoices & helping our accountant, and I've slowly been acquiring more and more responsibilities. It's like Pokemon! ... with a lot more stress involved! I currently answer the phones & assist with estimating projects - requesting prices, calling general contractors & preparing the spreadsheets. In reality what my job comes down to is my Dad calling me from various parts of California with thousand-dollar problems every few hours & I google the answers!

In my off time I'm still an avid PC gamer. I'm very much into competitive gaming - probably stemming from my enjoyment of Stick Online's tournaments - and I'm currently traveling up the ladder in League of Legends. I've been stuck at Platinum 2 for a while now, and with my computer breaking down for a bit I've become a bit rusty... but I'm hoping to hit Diamond before the season ends! When I'm not playing League, I'm generally playing Hearthstone, DayZ, or various Steam games.

A day in the life as me - I wake up at 6:45, scavenge breakfast or grab a bagle or smoothie or something nearby. I get to work by 8:00 & develop major back pain (apparently I've developed minor scoliosis over time, shit sucks!) until roughly 12-ish... and eat lunch nearby. I'm back in the office an hour later, then I get off at 5:00. I'm usually home by 6:00 after running some kind of errand, and then I'm playing various games until my brain quits working.

hope you guys are doing alright! I haven't really talked to ya'll SO peeps in quite some time.

I haven't really been online in a few months. Holy crap, looking back on this post, it's just mindboggling how fast time flies by. I posted this thread when I was a sophomore in highschool... now I'm already halfway through my senior year, and by the time I graduate I should already have, or be close to, an associates degree. I actually have my permit now, I didn't apparently when I posted this.
