Title: Mad keyboard problem o_o
Post by: krele on May 30, 2010, 04:01:16 AM
Please refrain from commenting bad punctuation or grammar in this post, because that's the nature of this topic...

3 days ago my keyboard went crazy... When I startup the system, everything is fine for first 10-20 minutes. But then it starts:

1. When I type, my caps randomly shift from time to time...
2. When caps are off, I cannot hold shift to write an uppercase letter, however, I can hold shift to write a symbol like "#$%&".
3. While typing, sometimes the form I'm typing in freezes... It then writes what I typed in the time it froze BACKWARDS!...
Like I would type "Hello there" and suddenly I would see "Hello ereht".

Troubleshooting:
1. I've tried reinstalling drivers, and updating them to the very best...
2. I've tried to use different keyboard, but the problem persists...
3. Even when I unplug the keyboard, I can still see caps toggling...

I'm pretty sure this problem is not of hardware nature... It wouldn't work for first 20 minutes, then start dancing like mad... What should I do?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm, strage.
I am thinking its a loose connection. Try unplugging it then replugging it.
Do you  have an other desktop in your home?
Switching out your parents or sibling's keyboard and testing it for a little might tell you if something is really wrong with the keyboard.
Just a few thoughts, but I'm not a computer whiz.

What brand/model keyboard are you using?

Also, I'm sure this probably should go without asking, but as there are 25 million gallons of oil spilling out in the gulf, we as humans are perfect examples of why that statement is null and void:  Have you ran a virus scan?  Seems rather goofy for a virus, but I'd recommend one none the less.
When you say you re-installed the drivers, did you do a proper un-installation and re-installation, or did you just find the newest drivers and install them?

Try and run a live Linux cd's and see if still have the problem there. If you still have something wrong there its most likely something wrong in the hardware. If not than its something wrong with your software.

Sounds A LOT like sticky keys.

All my "Ease of access" stuff is disabled... No sticky, filter or toggle keys... Also, "display a warning message when turning the setting on" is checked... If it would be turned on, I would be notified...

Genius SlimStar 820 Solargizer.
Tried scanning my computer with the latest AVG pro. When the problem began, it was fishy to me that it was a faulty software.
I've properly uninstalled drivers, properly disabled, then uninstalled the hardware, and properly installed it back, with the disc that was in a package with my keyboard.

I've stated I tried using different keyboard. To make sure it's software, I just borrowed a Plug-n-Play keyboard from each of my neighbours... The problem persists.
I've also checked google for this problem. There was a topic with the same problem as I have now, but it's long time dead, without the problem being solved.

Uh... check your USB ports?

But if you don't know any evil pranksters, then I have no idea.

You checked your keyboard hardware. But not the hardware inside your PC. And it maybe could be if your still having trouble. But ill agree that that is rare. Just download and burn a Ubuntu CD. And see if it work. I would give you a CD if i could.

Also have you tried safe mode on windoes to see if it goofs there?

And have you tried looking around your Bios? Mine logs keyboard errors and has options for how to handle the keyboard.

You don't happen to have any kind of macro software running do you?

Just a thought.

If you cant use your PC then backup and reinstall. Might be a good thing to do if that windoes installation is years old.

I concur.  With windows, I like to do a backup and refresh annually.  A lot of people complain about performance degradation with their computers, and they've had them running the same OS installation for years.  It's somewhat like running a car, the longer you run it, the more wear and tear it'll get on both the software and the hardware side.  Simple maintenance sometimes just won't be enough, eventually, it succumbs to just needing a refresh.  Starting with Vista, if it's pre-installed, a lot of manufacturers have the capability of backing up your files for you before re-installing the operating system (not sure if it is an OS capability with Vista, I know it is with Windows 7).

Definitely sounds like it's time for a refresh.

Thanks guys ;)... I'll start burning stuff on dvds ;D

If I make a backup in a wizard, will it save ALL my files or what? I never made backups of that sort, I always burned my important stuff on a medium and then copied them once needed...

Iv never used the backup wizard so I'm not sure. Most of the time i take an extrenal harddrive or flash drive and put irreplaceable files on it. Also once you have your new Windoes make sure you goto windoes update site in IE. You dont want to get any malware.

I'm not sure of the native backup client that comes on the Windows OS.  The one's I've used are part of the re-imaging tool that I use to re-image my computer with a fresh copy of the OS.  Essentially, what that does is it takes and saves every file in your C: partition and copies it to something along the lines of C:\BACKUP.  So essentially you have every single file on your C drive copied.  It can take up a wee bit of space, but you can easily go through and take out what you need, then just delete the directory entirely once you are finished, recovering your disk space.

EDIT:  As for what I would do if I didn't have that available when re-installing a Windows OS and wanted to go the DVD route, I'd use 7-zip to zip up the Users directory (on Vista or 7) and split the files into DVD size segments, then burn each segment to a DVD.  If I wanted to go the external hard disk route, I'd just copy over all the files (or if the disk isn't big enough on one, but you have a couple, do the 7-zip split, and place the segments as needed on whatever drives available).

I would suggest that he not make an image now with his messed up software. :P Unless you mean for him to reinstall and make an image when everything is working.

I never said an image of his current broken OS, I said backup his user folder on his computer, then re-image his computer with a fresh install of his OS.  What good would come from taking a snapshot image of his computer when it's broken?
