Yea seriously. I wish the concept of the internet meme were dead. It's such an annoying thing in itself. The fact that hundreds of thousands of people accross the internet latch onto a single, and usually ridiculous, "joke" is just lame.
Actually, if you look at what causes a meme to die (it becoming mainstream) I think the death of the internet meme is pretty immenent. You hear more and more about it in more and more public avenues. Hopefully this means the people who generally latch onto them will start to realize how lame they really are.

Most of the funny GlaDOS dialogue after the 'official' levels (that is, the ones before you try to destroy GlaDOS) comes from the reference to the promised cake. I.E.: "Weeee are pleased that you made it through the final challenge where we pretended we were going to murder you. We are very very happy for your success. We are throwing a party in honor of your tremendous success. Place the device on the ground, then lie on your stomach with your arms at your sides. A party associate will arrive shortly to collect you for your party. Make no further attempt to leave the testing area. Assume the 'Party Escort Submission Position' or you will miss the party."
You know, I think I'm the only one who ever tried to assume the Party Escort Submission Position. What the !@#$ game- if you want me to, then something should happen when I do!
Well, back on topic.

You missed my point. I meant "What!?" as in, "What the hell!? There's plenty more than the cake that makes the game awesome!" I know the cake referrences are funny, but the parts that are not about the cake are also really great. So your statement that it is the ONLY thing that makes Portal awesome is just wrong. (Or it's your opinion and I disagree with it...)

I gotta calm down with these. But god I can't resist some of the shit you guys say.
All of them, like most of you said.
Except for the few that are fun to use on people as a form of trolling, like "COOL STORY BRO" and "you mad?"
Gotta love my trolling.
(And "DAT ASS" is just !@#$ing perfect, because it's barely ever used but I always laugh at it.)
And hate the player, don't hate the game. Memes were alright until some fags decided to break two very important rules and next thing you know, it's all mainstream and the media has overhyped what were considered to be some very good jokes, and then the cycle began. Soon enough, when jokes are overused, they're no longer funny. Memes are the same way. The memes themselves are typically okay. It's not until they're spammed by both annoying !@#$tards and the hilarious failure that is the mass media, that makes them gayer than a three-pronged dildo. If it wasn't for dumbasses breaking those two rules in particular, memes wouldn't be as hated as they are today and would actually still be funny. Maybe.
/apathetic rage
Well, I'm sure some were funny originally, but you have to admit some are just plain ridiculous. Not even looking at the fact that they're overused. Some memes are just dumb and unfunny.
Btw, what 2 rules are you referring to?
Makes it sound like he is referring to the rule of having been "spammed by both annoying !@#$tards and the hilarious failure that is the mass media". My interpretation, but it looks like he meant that by saying "Those rules" as though they were the reason prior to stating it. I like the ones that are always funny to view, but when they are spammed, or generally abused(Stupid variations) it gets out of hand to the point of hating them. Atleast for me.
Probably the rules of <Removed at Monsieur Snakeman's Request>, or more so, the first 2 rules - which are the same rules as the first two in Fight Club if you have seen the movie or read the book. I won't say the rules, in order to follow the rules.

Probably the rules of <DISREGARD THIS, I LIKE TO FOLLOW RULES>, or more so, the first 2 rules - which are the same rules as the first two in Fight Club if you have seen the movie or read the book. I won't say the rules, in order to follow the rules.
Coming from that website, there was made a list of rules deemed "rules of the internet". They weren't enforced, but they were given as a code to live by.
Rules 1 and 2 clearly state "Do not talk about <removed>." (<removed> being the imageboard on that particular website that spawns a good amount of most of these memes.)
Now, obviously, to break rules 1 and 2 would mean to go off and tell others about that particular website and imageboard. Doing so causes the good old chain reaction of friends-telling-friends and soon it will be overpopulated with randomass people. Now, the website is, and always will be, a website that is deemed as for adults only (there's a rule stating that you must be 18 to browse, if not, you must leave immediately. This rule's enforced quite well, if you so much as mention you're underage, you can be reported and banned.). But, it's oh-so-easy to lie about your age on the internet, and so that's what most people did.
Now as we all know, teenagers can be the most immature losers ever. (I know, therefore I am.) So if you took a quite large group of these brats and threw them all in a website where there can be quite some good comedy, the content will spread amongst them and be repeated over and over and over.
This is what killed memes, and, in the end, this website's imageboard in particular (I'm not naming this because it's polluted with enough stupid things already). After being exposed to the general public via a few individuals breaking rules 1 and 2, they've spreaded and become so overused and popular that they're just not even funny anymore.
If any of you decide to explore this mentioned website (and I HIGHLY advise you don't, there is some graphic content on there. No, I will not tell any of you what it is. I'm one of the few that follow the rules.), and notice some funny memes, keep them disclosed. If you decide to use them and people go "what's that from", please remember rules 1 and 2. Just say it's an inside joke. Memes are much better when only you and a few certain others know of them. Exposing them to the public kills off the joke.
tl;dr: Don't go off telling people where memes originate from or what they are. Keep them an inside joke amongst those who already know and don't overdo them.

Typically inside jokes are only funny to those in the "know". This does not change when those who are not are clued in. It's still not funny to them, mostly because they're pretty stupid jokes, but now that these people are part of the "club" they feel special. I hate shit like that. If some people want to make a joke about lazors or whatever random crap, let them be retarded (It's okay to be retarded btw). It doesn't mean every freakin person needs to laugh at all this nonsense. But whatever...
Btw, I just remembered my least favorite meme. Chuck Norris jokes. I'm sure everyone who frequents here knows by now how much I hate that meme for jacking Bill Brasky's style. Oh, and more recently, the Dos Equis commercial. It's a fraud of a fraud. I mean come on, if you're going to claim to be the Most Interesting Man in the World, at least drink a more interesting beer. At least Brasky was more modest, he was simply the Best Salesman in the Region. But he was far more interesting than Chuck Norris or Dos Equis combined. If anyone rivals Brasky, it's Jameson. That man made a mean whiskey.

*applause* Well done.
THAT! Is AWESOME!!!
Memes like Chuck Norris are indeed one of the worst. Mainly because it's overhyped and overestimated. I mean, there are a very small few (a very small few) that were actually genuinely funny, but as it starts to get popular with the crowd, a lot of stupid ones that made no sense or were just not even clever or funny kept popping up, and that's what killed it. When it was simple things like "Chuck Norris can slam a revolving door.", it was pretty okay. When it just became INFLATED with interest and popularity from the general public (which we all know, has a below-average intelligence), a bunch of stupid "CHUCK NORRIS IS SO STRONG HE CAN FLY LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL"s popped up all over the place, and that's what killed the meme.
Same thing happened to Rickroll and The Game. It was just overspammed by annoying preteen brats to the point where seeing it just makes you think "Oh, THIS again."
Snake, I get what you're saying, but the Chuck Norris jokes were a ripoff from the very beginning. Where ever the hell they sprung up from, even when they were original and "underground" or whatever the hell you want to call it, it was an old concept. The effect you're referring to where it became "unfunny" when more people started using it happened for me as soon as people started using Bill Brasky jokes with Chuck Norris in his place. The second it was Chuck Norris, it became overused. Hell, the Brasky jokes, by that point, were pretty old. My friends and I had been quoting Brasky jokes loud and annoyingly for years and had killed it pretty thoroughly by the time I heard the first Chuck Norris joke (and even then the skit was pretty old... it's from the late 90's). So I think you can see the irony here...

It shares a similar root to mime. It has to do with cultural phenomenon of people imitating (or miming) things they see.
Quote from: Lingus on July 01, 2010, 08:53:00 PM
It shares a similar root to mime. It has to do with cultural phenomenon of people imitating (or miming) things they see.
QuoteA meme (pronounced /ˈmiːm/, rhyming with "cream"[1]) is a unit of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. (The etymology of the term relates to the Greek word μιμητισμός ([mɪmetɪsmos]) for "something imitated".)[2] Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes, in that they self-replicate and respond to selective pressures.[3]
The British scientist Richard Dawkins coined the word "meme" in The Selfish Gene (1976)[1][4] as a concept for discussion of evolutionary principles in explaining the spread of ideas and cultural phenomena. Examples of memes given in the book included melodies, catch-phrases, beliefs (notably religious beliefs), clothing fashion, and the technology of building arches.[5]
Meme-theorists contend that memes evolve by natural selection (in a manner analogous to that of biological evolution) through the processes of variation, mutation, competition, and inheritance influencing an individual meme's reproductive success. Memes spread through the behaviors that they generate in their hosts. Memes that propagate less prolifically may become extinct, while others may survive, spread, and (for better or for worse) mutate. Theorists point out that memes which replicate the most effectively spread best, and some memes may replicate effectively even when they prove detrimental to the welfare of their hosts.[6]
A field of study called memetics[7] arose in the 1990s to explore the concepts and transmission of memes in terms of an evolutionary model. Criticism from a variety of fronts has challenged the notion that scholarship can examine memes empirically. Some commentators question the idea that one can meaningfully categorize culture in terms of discrete units.
