Title: Vindictus
Post by: Meiun on September 11, 2010, 12:52:40 AM
So I've been looking forward to this really cool looking new free to play action MMO thats coming out in the next month or so called Vindictus (formerly titled Mabinogi Heroes). From the looks of it, it seems like a huge step in the right direction in terms of moving away from the whole target based auto attack system that so many online games now use. I would go into more depth about it, but I think a video or two would probably explain it better:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM2yfu_IqV4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM2yfu_IqV4)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnKJpXZxmyU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnKJpXZxmyU)

Looks pretty sweet! Apparently the pre-open beta starts on the 15th of this month, and all who were in the closed beta get access, and can invite two friends (if anyone has a spare invite I would gladly accept ;D). Open beta then starts sometime next month I think.

The trailer looks good I must say. Looks like a game I would enjoy. I couldn't help but notice the Nexon logo at the beginning, so is it a game developed by Nexon?

If I've noticed anything from games developed by Nexon, they are free, that's for certain. But all of the good items you must pay for.

Wow, that looks extremely fun. I really like the whole environment construction concept it's using, and being able to pick up most things and use them as weapons, like TREES!
Looking forward to it.

@JoEL
Nexon is actually just a publisher, they do not develop any of their games themselves. The company that is actually making the game i Devcat, the company that made Mabinogi (also Nexon, and also free). This game is suppose to be sortof a prequal to Mabinogi, even though this game is way more brutal and less cartoony (as well as having very different gameplay). But either way, Mabinogi is actually a really great game as well. If you actually spend a little time checking it out, it is (in my opinion) one of the most content filled, feature packed, and unique MMO's out there now. It really takes the whole MMO concept much further than just grinding for levels and gear.

I heard that Nexon will be dropping Mabinogi in the near future, at some Generation. Is this supposed to be a successor?
Title: Re: Vindictus
Post by: Meiun on September 11, 2010, 01:02:05 PM
No it's not suppose to be a successor I don't think. If anything it's a prequal, but they really couldn't be more different. I don't see why they would drop it either, It's a great game, and as far as I know is doing well. They are apparently making a Mabinogi 2 as well, but that is a seperate game.

Grr, my computer can't stand such awesome effects! :'(

EDIT: There a chance of a Mac version? I think my Mac's graphics card is powerful enough.

I don't think the system requirements are all that high for how nice it looks. It uses the source engine, which has been out for a while (even though it is still a really great engine). Also, I definitely would not count on a mac version.

Pfft, yet another free MMO. Hah, I wonder how much money they used to make a bad game th-

Holy !@#$ing shit that's an awesome trailer! Thanks for sharing Meiun, I'm going to check it out as soon as it comes out.
Also I saw jiggle physics. +3 Bonus points. Also the game's main site through a google search reads that its built on Valve's source engine. Even more reason to play it, I'll feel right at home.
Title: Re: Vindictus
Post by: krele on September 11, 2010, 10:00:43 PM
Well I must say the trailer is well made. But usually from my experience if the game has a good trailer it sucks. If the trailer sucks, the game will be awesome.

But I hope this game won't follow. I like the fighting system and physics... But I'm a little bit more attracted towards cartoony graphics. And since I'm probably moving to LoL again, I don't know will I be able to try it out.

EDIT:
Just checked out dragon's nest. That mmo would suit me more. Will try it out if it EVER comes out...

I can attempt to send it again, but I remember Yahoo being ass when it comes to e-mail. Hell- I dislike using e-mails in general. Pain in the arse if you ask me. I remember a long time ago that I had to make an entire new Yahoo account just to get e-mail, because I wasn't getting it for some reason. And then it happened again- so I swapped to hotmail.

Wait a bit longer and if you don't get it I'll send it again.

It's a chain thing, so whoever gets a key gets 2 free ones. Dan/Meiun will probably give you one.

If anyone liked, I could make a list of players with keys to show everyone who's participating.

This is what I was going for, everyone on here getting a key.

Also Danimal, I got the key in a incredibly hilarious manor, I just google searched "Vindictus Key", and the first result took me to a forum of sorts of a dude who just opened a thread to chain codes together. It was just made 30 minutes after I came to it, so I had time to snag the first one there, enter it, and blammo it worked.

It was just a stroke of luck, to be honest. Also Cactus, you gotta tell me if you got your key or not dude. I'll send it again if you need it.

EDIT: I just did a google search for the exact thing I typed last time, and the thread appears to be gone. Or Google says anyways- it might have gotten locked, thread opener could have deleted it, dunno.

Do keep in mind that the open beta opens in 3 days from now. So yeah clock, make sure you got whatever you need by then.

By the way, I launched the game launcher anyways and yeah- this game is definitely built on Valve's Source engine. The 'loading block' in the bottom right, the faded background while loading, the menu, ect. Heheh.

I'm stating that because of my PC's incapability to run 3D graphics due to its terrible graphics card, I'm buying this program that will allow me to run Windows programs on my Mac. This will allow me to play the game without troubles (if the program supports online play). The program is also being installed for other purposes (mostly Game Maker related).

To explain it shortly, I'll most likely be able to play Vindictus without issues when it's released.

@11Clock
I'd be careful, I know that a lot of programs that do stuff like that only support fairly basic stuff. I don't know if I'd count on being able to play a 3D game using some sortof program like that, and even if you could I definitely wouldn't count on having it run fast. I'd do a bit of research first. The best thing you could do would probly just be to use bootcamp and install a copy of windows on your mac for real.
Title: Re: Vindictus

Forgot to mention that Parallels doesn't just run Windows programs, you need an operating system to support these programs. So it's pretty much like Bootcamp, but no rebooting necessary!

And I've already done research. Saw videos of people playing FPS games using Parallels without difficulties. You can see a video review I found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftlkTJdM00I

And a Halo 2 Test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7du-C-bDlrQ

EDIT: I installed the trial version of Parallels on my Mac. I will be testing it with some Game Maker programs and some 3D online games.

EDIT2: I feel like I'm going off topic, so let's go ahead and get back on topic.

Oh come on- the jiggle physics make up like, what- 40% of the main reasons you should try the game?

But to be fair, you'll be cutting down shit to hardly 'admire' whatever you have..Unless they're the size of mountains. Anyways I played for a bit, tis awesome. Very awesome- but the east server was !@#$ed so I played a bit on the west side. But im done for tonight. Might play a little bit more later. Speaking of which, I believe the East server is back up and running. Which server are you guys playing on?

Very cool, played it for a couple hours, and I'm really liking it so far. My only problem is it's getting a little repetitive and easy, but that's completely because I've been soloing the quests on normal difficulty, I'm sure it would be much more interesting with other people and/or on harder difficulties where it's actually a challenge. I'm using the female defender type character, and so far really liking her blocking abilities, it makes the bosses actually extremely easy, you do your full combo, block, repeat, maybe wander around and pick up some barrels to throw and stun, combo again. If anyone wants to play, my girls name is Vesper, hop on Scotty's Teamspeak or bug me on MSN/Xfire.

I know the level designs will get mixed up a bit more later, as well as some much more interesting boss's (such as the one in the proluge). Also, just wait till you get to one of the big boss's when your around level 9 or so, tried soloing that guy and got totally ownedddd.

Trust me dude, I MUCH rather prefer throwing shit at people than using my shield and sword. Why? I have no idea- but Ive developed a habit of ALWAYS throwing a pumpkin off of a ship when you're going into a dungeon.

Still waiting for the East server to come back up. Good god- I knew Nexon was an ass of a publisher, but did they really just waste 4 hours trying to fix the server, and brought nothing to show for it?

Ahh whatever. Still have a level 8-9 Fionna on West anyways..

Than come to the west! You're only lvl 6. Takes like, half an hour since you don't need to read anymore. Also, servers are lame. They've been basically "down" most of the day, and just when I connect, they go down for a "schedualed" maintenance.

I decided to instead use Boot Camp, didn't feel like I needed to run 2 operating systems at one time. I tested the OS with Mabinogi and Wonderking. Mabinogi worked well with minor lag. Wonderking worked even better...until Windows XP froze up in the middle of a mission quest.

I should be able to run Vindictus now that I know for sure my Mac's graphics card supports 3D. I will be requesting a beta key.

A couple of my all time favorite PC games are getting MMO's made of them, and they are being made exclusively for China/Korea, and they region block everyone else. It really does suck. :(

Now I'll never get to play a new Dungeon Keeper game!

On the note of Vindictus being down, they've been having a lot of server issues. They've been bringing the server down and up all day for maintenance and they've posted that there have been a lot of connection problems they are currently working on fixing. Just look at the Vindictus homepage.

I dont think any of you guys are outside of the US, but do keep in mind if you're not in North America, Canada, Hawaii or..Alaska? You can't play. Nexon put up a regional wall so if you're from europe, you can't log on.

Just letting you know. Also Danimal, the servers have been !@#$ed ever since the game first came out. So don't be surprised if you cant get on.

Well, after playing yesterday and today, I've realized that it needs a lot of polish.  I fully understand the terms "beta" and "free", but for Christ's sake, that whole thing us beta testers do, where we report bugs (yeah, those of us that actually beta test properly), we need a place to do it, and unless my ignorance is leading me astray, I can't even find a freakin' link to go and report bugs that I see.  I'm not even referring to the absolutely horrendous and unbearable lag, or anything like that, I'm talking in the Prologue, when the spider magically climbed thin air as though it was the tower off in the other direction and the camera was thrown way off, yeah, that's a bug, and a big one.

It needs a lot of work still, and to those who have yet to try it, don't think it's the next WoW or anything yet, I just hope they don't decide to release it with all the issues they are having with it right now.

Nah, almost certain that's not it.  One minute I'm running perfectly fine, the next minute I join a team and I have 1 bar, skipping across the map constantly at an unbearable rate.  There's a lot of things that they need to work on before they release it obviously, I just hope they are diligent with their updates as they seemingly have been.

EDIT: By the way, I'm TwatPaddle on the west server for anyone that's playing.
Title: Re: Vindictus
Post by: Meiun on September 17, 2010, 10:47:27 PM
That's pretty weird. My guy is level 11, havs grouped with numerous different people, and never seen a wink of lag or any bugs. My brother has said the same thing, and he's running it on a fairly shitty mac laptop thats using bootcamp. I'd definitely go ahead and report it though, may be some sortof compatibility bug with something on your computer. That whole spider climbing in the air thing really makes me think its somehow graphics related though.

It may be more effort than you want to put into testing it, but you could always try to load another source engine game onto your computer to see if you have the same issues. Think I've even got a spare copy of Half Life 2 available if you want it.

Oh, and as a side note. I have moved over to the East server now that it has been functional, so anyone else that happens to be on it and wants to add me, go for it. Name is the same as always.

Lag is dependent on your group. The game is P2P. Thus, if you get some faggot from Africa who went around the IP block, you could have your connection shot.

I had a sneaking suspicion that might be the case, as the party leader always has 5 bars, and everyone else has less....
Title: Re: Vindictus
Post by: Meiun on September 17, 2010, 11:39:44 PM
Thats a possibility I guess, although I havn't played any other source engine based game where that is the case. I've also had people in my group with only 1 bar of latency on a number of occasions and still not seen any noticeable problems. Easiest way to test I guess would just be to launch your own boat with nobody else in your party and try a mission that way. Would at least help narrow it down a bit.
Title: Re: Vindictus

It is the case. Google it, it's Peer to Peer. Though I think the servers may have something to do with it as well. I couldn't find a group that wasn't laggy.

This isn't exactly Oracle funding this project, and I can't imagine they have unlimited resources at their disposal to host the servers to dedicate resources necessary for each instance to run flawlessly.  They likely don't have much other options.

Title: Re: Vindictus

Some of this lag is downright intolerable... I swear... What makes it even better is when you are lag locked in a dungeon, can't proceed any further because the lag has prevented a door from opening, and to top it all off, the leader leaves, and they don't reimburse the 5 minutes lost in the 12 minute total given to do the run...

But yes, you could just log onto the site and choose east instead, and I believe it would work fine.

What is the recommended server, east or west?
Incorrect. You can download the game, certainly, but you can't actually play without a key.

East is better from what I hear in this topic.

..Regarding the game, I decided to redownload and repatch, because even after I cleared all my crap out, the whole 9 yards, it still isn't working. Hopefully it'll work tomorrow after I leave my computer on to patch it.

Yeah- I say East is better, everyone on other forums were begging for the damn thing to come up. But when West was down they were all like "oh well no big deal".

Do keep in mind dudes that when you're in dungeons, it's Peer to Peer. So if you have some dude in Australia who bypassed the regional wall who is the Party leader, then your game will lag like hell. If you want my recommendation, just make your own party all the time. It'll be hurting the others in your party yes- but it's their choice you know. So even if people are saying "Oh go East", keep in mind that if you aren't over here, you're gonna get paired with laggy games.

Atleast, I think that's how it works :P.

October 13th Open Beta begins. With this the Guild system is being released. I sense a Stick Online guild in the future yes?

Not to mention, for those of you who got far enough into the game, onto boat two, you noticed you used up those silver coins pretty darn fast. They refreshed every 2 hours during beta, but still. When the games out of beta, they only refresh two times a week, past that, you have to pay.

I've been playing this game for the past 4 hours.

It's pretty fun, I love the lore and story line. Though the combat system leaves something to be desired. It's rather repetitive.
I also wish I could toggle the music volume in the audio options. I like to listen to my own battle tunes.

Needless to say, the art direction is flawless.

It'll get boring quick, don't you worry.
Funny too, as I recall that the combat system was what essentially attracted a lot of people... at first glance...

Don't worry, it's dry and unimpressive past the first instance.

Unfortunately that seems to be the case...
I still love the lore though.

Yep, the combat system seems awesome until you realize by level 20, you basically have all the moves you ever will have, and all the sudden the games ALWAYS THE SAME.

Man. That's a shame.
There's nothing I hate more than repetitive gameplay, it's why I have such a lack of interest in FPS games, but now this...

I think I'll just play Lunia or something...

Yes it was. I don't play that game. Lately I've been playing Cosmic Break, and it's an extremely satisfying game, not nearly as repetitive as this.
