Title: Stick Online's Second Game Tournament
Post by: crozier on October 02, 2010, 11:41:06 PM
Back on the hangout, the first Stick Online Game Tournament encouraged the members of Stick Online to test their programming skills among their friends. This was a success.
I hope many of you enter, just to show how much you have learned over the years. And I encourage any game maker, who didn't participate in the last tourney, to try their best and create something gamers will say, "Wow, this guy is new to making games?" or, "I heard of this guy. He?s pretty good!"

Some Specific Rules
1. Anyone is eligible to participate, even 'newbs.' But please keep it T or under so it does not offend anyone.
2. Games cannot be completed less than 1 week of the time this is posted. I do not mind if you have started on a game already. But if it already done you cannot post it here. Any screenshots, videos, game concepts, etc: CAN be posted to show if you are working on your project. It is highly encouraged that you stay in contact with this topic, so we know you haven't left.
3. You are allowed to claim a game genre like a ninja fighting dinosaur race game. You must get down to specifics about this. If you want to do something along the lines of something that is already claimed, change it up a little. Perhaps a ninja fighting Jet Ski battle, or cyborg race, would work.
4. Put effort into your game. Do something you are proud of.
5. Once I have 7 people complete there game, I will set the time left to finish at two weeks.
6. Games must be made by the creator. The exception to this rule is music. Minimal amounts of people know how to create music, and don?t have the programs to do so. The composer MUST be credited for his or her work!
7. You are only allowed to present one game to be judged.
Judging Rules
1. There will be an odd number of judges. 7/9/11 would be best so there are no ties in the final judging.
2.  You MUST have an opinion on why you voted said way. If you give a game a 9 and say ,?It?s fun? and go about your day drinking milk and cookies thinking nothing of your decision on why you rated the game a 9, you will no longer be an official judge.
3. Judges can rate on a 0-10 scale. 0 being a complete waste of my time and a 10 being I would buy this game.
4. After the time is up (See #5 on rules) judges will pm me stating the results of the specific categories.  There overall rating will be posted in the topic alongside their thoughts on the game.

Specific Categories:
Best Overall game- this is the average of the scores that the judges post.
Honorable Mentioned- the second highest scoring game.
Most Inventive- the most unique and non-repetitive game deserves this spot.
Loveliest Graphics- the game with the most appealing graphics gets this award.
Best Programming- any game that is very smooth and feels good, depending on the judge?s taste.
Best Sound- the game with clean sound or music gets ?Best Sound?.
Time Killer?s Golden Star- any game that keeps you sucked in (aka addictive) will get this spot.

Current Judges:
Chief Judge crozier, in charge of adding scores.
1. Mystery
2. Chaos
3. Scotty
4. Lucifer
5. Jackabomb

Question: Is there any limitation on the tools we can use to create the game?
Title: Re: Stick Online's Second Game Tournament
Post by: crozier on October 03, 2010, 12:09:44 AM
No current regulations.
I suggest game maker as it is easy to learn and makes fun and sometimes very challenging games.
Many of the members know of GM and it would be fair for all if we all used the same program.
Do you suggest that I change the rules and add that GM must be used?
Title: Re: Stick Online's Second Game Tournament
Post by: Assassininja on October 03, 2010, 01:16:38 AM
I don't really have a preference either way, I was just wondering because some people feel that using tools other than GM automatically make better games than GM, and therefore give and unfair advantage (which is untrue, by the way).

I might join.

Just an fyi, having an odd number of judges won't stop tied votes because it's using a scale system. Having an even number of judges is just as likely to yield a tied score.

I'd join, but I don't understand WHAT for a game we should make now.
It would be cool, if theres a rule like:
"In Your game have to be
- a Stickman
- mattress
- Meiun"

Its just an example and so you had to use your imagination and It would be
FUN!
(Try to ignore my grammatic.)

Not for the other parts of the compitition. I don't think I made it clear when judges are voting for a sub catagory, you dont score it. Like the judges would say "Lovliest Graphics: Cactuscat's game Turn Table Madness." If it was even, there is a possibility for a tie.

And at assassin, yes games produced with things other then GM can be better, but more skills are needed. It all depeneds on who is behind the screen and what they know.

And at CoCe, in my opinion people should be able to do whatever they like.

I am also glad people are intrested.

Since I can't code anything to save my life, and I was a judge on the competition before this one, I'd like to reapply to be a judge, if that's alright with you, crozier.

Sign me up as a programmer. Good luck to anyone else who signs up. Here's a first look at one of my sprites.

I'll leave you all to speculate what it could possibly be used for.

Because this is a Stick Online competition, might as well make my game Stick Online themed. That means I won't be entering Blockster 2 in the competition, unless multiple entries are ok.

Wouldn't it be somewhat fair to require that all games not be started before the start of this competition?  Seems like it gives those who started their games earlier an unfair advantage...

croz, I suggest a couple of rules. One being you can't enter something that was started on before the start of this competition, and another being that you can't take anything from someone else and put it into your game. If these rules aren't followed, I think the game maker should be disqualified.

I don't agree with the not allowed to have been started before. The YoYoGames comp doesn't require this. Just because someone has worked on it longer doesn't mean it will be better. On top of that, you won't be able to tell if a game has been started on before this.

edit: ART, mine will be open to people to play. xD Although it won't be anything as good as what some peoples. imo.
edit: ART, I just remembered I showed you it last night, don't show anyone else >.>
Title: Re: Stick Online's Second Game Tournament
Post by: crozier on October 04, 2010, 07:58:00 PM
Haha all these day posts.

I am sorry CoCe but I can't allow a SO based game, same with clock. I want the game to be unique and filled with new ideas. I am not sure if you can enter blockster two, as it is a sequal and not as unique as most games, and you are far into development.

I will add: Games must be made by the creator. The exception to this rule is music. Minimal amounts of people know how to create music, and don?t have the programs to do so. The composer MUST be credited for his or her work! Graphics and programming must be done yourself.  Again as mystery, an official judge, stated whoever doesn?t follow this will be disqualified.

You are only able to present ONE game. If you have made two games over the next month or two, then pick your better one. And remember the rule about effort. Put effort into your game.  Unless you have a lot of time on your hands, you shouldn?t be able to make a respectable game in a weekend. For example, if you notice your graphics are lacking, look up on some tutorials and make that better for your game.

Another debated topic is starting a game before the tourney. I have not fully decided on what to do here, but I am leaning towards being able to have started it already. Even though some people do not get enough time as others, you will still have at least a month to finish. And for some people Fall Break is coming up and you will get several days to work; and you will also be able to work the next 4+ weekends. So I am letting people enter started games, unless you are ?+ into development already.
@art games of course! That would take away much of the fun, and you wouldn?t even see what your rival is presenting. Games will be posted for all to see.

Also a question to the other judges, do you think there should be collaborations?
Feel free to tell me more opinion if you disagree with my judgement.

Do you ask whether or not I and the other judges can judge games together, he points out something that I missed, and I bring to light something he overlooked?  I kinda assumed that was going to be the case...

I kinda meant two people working together as a team. Im sure some people aren't the best spriters/ programmers/ etc. Working in little groups would help solve this, but give an unfair advantage.
Yet the judge collaboration is also useful. Im sure the judges can talk to each other and or argue about said games.

Post by: Chaos on October 04, 2010, 08:59:31 PM
I agree that you should allow games that were already being worked on, as there is really no way you can regulate otherwise.  I also think you should let people enter as a collaborative team if they so wish, as it's actually fairly rare for games to be made by solely one person, and it allows people to pool their particular talents.

My point was that in extreme cases, if one person has been working on a game for a year or so, and it would be impossible to create another one of that magnitude in that short period of time, it shouldn't be allowed. You may be able to recognize this if the game is just TOO big/complex/whatever. Smaller games I'm okay with.

But what about in the case of someone who, while the game is not being "made" per se, but the creator has designed several separate scripts, sprites, ect previously which he decides he wants to use in this game?

Also, more teasers!

Pebble, just take a look at your game. Do you believe the work you've completed so far could be done within the time restraints given by the contest by anyone else? If so, you're in effect cheating the contest, in my opinion. If not, and it's more of a general outline, as long as the majority of the work is done while the contest is in effect, I don't see any problem with it.

I'd be willing to be a judge, if more are needed.

Not sure if this is allowed now that I read what croz wrote...I wouldn't call this exactly unique...but I think the game play itself might be, hopefully.

(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/5953/teaserh.png) (http://img84.imageshack.us/i/teaserh.png/)

It's not exactly hard to guess what it is, but I thought it'd be fun to make. But if you've read this far and still don't know, it's a beyblade game.

Just threw together some mock up sprites and got started on the creation of your own beyblade. Everything of course works so far, although it looks very plain as you may have noticed. The reason behind this is because I'm lazy :) but I will get to it at some point to lay it out a lot better and what not.

So yeah, give us a heads up if this isn't allowed croz. Also,

Game Complete: 5%

Ok, Joel I honestly don't know what a beyblade is. It is like a top? And if beyblades are trademarked or anything, try to just make it a top or a battletop or something. Other wise it should be ok. I haven't heard of a game like that.
Lucifer, yes I do need judges! You are in.
Igufed, not sure what your talking about. Did you make that card game? Or is mIRC a game in which you can make a card game?

I was bored when I posted..  mIRC is an IRC client that you can also make things in using mIRC's own 'language'.. I made that game in mIRC's own language.. Probably not acceptable for this ;)

A beyblade is a battle top used in the anime show Beyblade. Just spin some tops into the arena and watch them bump each other until one top is remaining, pretty much what the show is about. You can also buy some toys from stores and a plastic arena for your friends who own beyblades to battle with you.

Anyways, my game right now has no progress, but you'll see screenies in a little.

No they do not have to be made with GM.

Just like to state my progress. My game is an action ninja beat em up game. I have finished programming the platform engine, but having difficulties with the enemy. It is supposed to follow you and punch you when it gets close, like in Stick Online but way more sensitive. However I just get a drugged enemy doing the moonwalk off-screen. I'll let you know when I get the enemy to work properly.

EDIT: I got everything working properly. Just need to make the ability to hurt and get hurt and it shall be good to go. Here is the basic example of how the game works: http://www.box.net/shared/n7z1ymkohj Move and jump with the arrow keys and press Z to throw things. They don't do anything for now.

Very nice looking 11. Fluid animation. Something's up with the animation for the enemy jump, though.
Crozier, I'm lucky. PSAT is tomorrow for me, but thankfully, I'm one of those people who can sit in class, learn by osmosis and then ace test, usually I don't need to study, and tests don't scare me whether I do or not. The only times I need to study for them are for tests in my AP classes. Osmosis alone doesn't cut it in there.

Wow, very fluid walking animation. So we're getting to the point of posting demo's are we? Well I guess I shall join you. ^_^ I will put the Online portion of the game up for the next week or so.

*note* Online is not meant to be fighting with other players and such. Its made to be like Diablo, where you have two seperate game plays. One that is easily hacked, and another that is not. The online will allow for legit accounts whilst offline does not(they are not encrypted, easily edited). It includes Chat and will hopefully have a select few other nice additions later on. *note*

Use fake passwords when creating your account, the information is not encrypted yet.

Lots more to come, this is not my submission, just matching 11clock on showing a demo. lol...

Most definitely, I've got faith in my GML knowledge. The online part is actually pretty much done for now. Everything else if offline programming. Also, considering I have all the time in the world being graduated and all.

Heh, leveled up to 406 agility and jumped off the screen. With 406 agi, you can traverse the entire map in 6 seconds, 85 milliseconds. Also, if you jump too high, it sends you to 0,0 coordinates x,y.

In reality, there is only one word which has no equivalent in other languages, was only used once in history, that is capable of expressing the power and awesomeness of rubber duckies. It was written on an old manuscript aboard the USS Arizona which had been copied off of an ancient tablet found in the bottom of a northern Scotland loch before a wave came that drowned the archeologist and simply disintegrated the tablet. Unfortunately, the only person who knew how to pronounce the word and its meaning were aboard the Arizona on December 7th, 1941. Everyone else but that one naval officer thought the word was simply mispelled.

However, the word "win", will suffice.

Woo, another double post!

This is my submission for the tournament. It is Version 0.9.9 which is tournament submission only + a few of my friends. Level cap is 9 due to the fact that at level ten you get a class and those classes don't have skills, yet. However once I do decide on what skills I want for the Fighter and Mage class there will be an update to Version 1.0

*note* Online is not meant to be fighting with other players and such. Its meant to be more like a chat room currently + more legit accounts *note*

Warning

In major game updates, your account may be deleted due to core game changes. However I will try to never have this happen. The only game update likely to actually do this is Version 2.0 due to the redone inventory and skills.

Someone decided to take advantage of a flaw that I forgot about. lol

But anyways, even though as a competition entry it may fail, I enjoyed making it. So if your going to just complain about how its a single monster or only one attack, don't bother. This would sound like "This is bullcrap, there is only one monster" or "LOL it fails theres only one attack". If your going to give constructive criticism like say on what you want to see asap before the competition is over, then feel free. This sounds like "There is only one attack and that makes the game very repetitive" or "The fact that there is only one monster makes things too easy". In the end its all how you word it. If you really wanted to see another monster or attacks that badly, you could create a design if you felt so obligated.

My last demo of the game, then you'll have to wait for the full version! The demo has 1 level, unfinished music, and 2 types of enemies. The full version will have 5 levels, 5 types of enemies, great music, a deep storyline, comics in-between levels, a main menu, and save options.

@Mystery: You have to extract files out of a .zip before you can run them sometimes.

Here have an update. Offline only due to huge core changes affecting the saving system, however this should never happen again once its all re-done. Besides, I implemented what lots of people complained it needed, well almost lol. Went from 16x20 variables for the inventory to 3x20 variables. Yay huge core changes. xD

Also enemies don't hurt you for the sake of testing.

Weapons:

Punch
Eraser
Pencil

Enemies:

Baby Pencil
Medium Pencil
Slug

Sadly still only one area, but all things in due time.

RayRay thinks the game is too easy, so I guess you just suck. Try not to rush the enemy, or they will surround you and **** you up.

One of you wanted an animation so here. But due to the fact I don't have a program to do so with, I had to use a website that kinda failed xD

Just like to say how far I am with my game. I have finished programming the first 3 levels, and have also programmed 4 of the 5 enemies. The last 2 levels will take longer to make, because they are different from the first 3 levels. I am about 45% done with the game.

What he said.

I am 80% done with my game. I got all levels done. I am now working on cutscenes and waiting for my remaining music to be done. The finished cutscenes will add 10%. The main menu and saving system will add 5%. The rest of the music I need will fill up the last 5%.

Hmmm, I look forward to it.

This is where I stand:

Movement Engine: 90% - Need to do jump through platforms.
Chat: 100%
Account System: 100%
Item System: 100%
Online Connectivity: 80% - Need to do some modifications to make it work 100% proper.
Monster system: 100%
Server Sided Monsters: 0% - Haven't started yet, want to finish Online Connectivity.
Story: 0% - Will be started once 1.0 is complete
Quests: ~0.5% - Have 2 quests, but will be changed.
Version 1.0 Backgrounds: 10%
Mount System: 100% - Not available.
PVP: 0% - Started after 1.0
Auction House: 0% - Started after 1.0
General Belief Of 1.0 Complete: %70

All in all, I have a decent chunk available. Once I complete the online connectivity+server sided monsters which shouldn't take longer than until Christmas, all thats really left is to wait for my spriter to complete more images. However a working demo should be available to those who are not image picky before he is complete. Kind've stoked right now. I'm having great amounts of fun doing this. xD

Haha, its not ambition, its joy. To me programming is fun. Its not something I do because I want to make some awesome game, its something I do because I enjoy the process, I enjoy figuring out new ways of doing things, and yes I enjoy the long hours of debugging only to find out your error was a single "." that got accidentally placed. However I have already stated if you would like some help I would be more than willing to help you learn.

In old english hunting terms, the game is afoot and I shall not be the one caught with my tea and biscuit withheld from teatime.

All soundtracks for my game are done, though one appears to be broken and I informed the composer about it.

I decided to add in a bonus survival mode to my game with local high scores. It's basically like the fourth level, but infinite long and progressively gets harder.

Well as I previously said, I found myself a spriter to join my team. So the credit for the sprites goes to him and not I. But yes, he has done an amazing job. Ever single time I see a sprite that I've asked him to create its exactly as I pictured it. Unfortunately due to the nature of the backgrounds and the complexity they contain, they will roll out a lot slower than most other things. So I may be posting it on here with only 1 area/2-3 backgrounds.

I could enter a game i am working on right now, it's going early alphatest in January probably. It is offline only for the time being. I have the concept and 85-90% of the engine already done, I've also written a story, which is over 4 pages long. I am developing in .net with Microsofts XNA framework.
By the way, if anyone knows how to set up a client server structure using c# in .net, i'd be happy to hear from him/her via pms.
Also I am looking for talented spriters, if anyone is interested in being a part of this project.
Don't expect too much, I only have 6 months of actual c# knowledge, but I have a lot of my engine like gravity, collisions & gamerooms already working properly and it is making a lot of fun.

Title: Re: Stick Online's Second Game Tournament
Post by: CherryPie on December 21, 2010, 12:08:37 PM
i'm afraid, I won't post the complete document, but if you are that interested, I will post a very small extract:

The story plays in an non existant fantasy world where the earth is split up in 2 parties:
- the Smallogs, who are forging weapons out of steel and strengthen theirselves with hard workouts and cutting down trees for burning wood etc.
- the Silverians, who are on the first glimpse less advanced than the Smallogs, but on the second are using the nature to their own purposes, like carving bows and arrows and interacting directly with the earth to concentrate powers (similiar to the navi from avatar).

The two parties are physically separated with a big ditch.
That's where the story starts. You as the player come into the land and have to decide which party you prefer, but you won't really choose a class, instead you will be able to have the ability to help both parties and equip items made from both.(This concept is from SplinterCellDoubleAgent/inFamous where you can change your karma to one side by doing the according quests)

The whole storyline is a bit of an reference to the civil wars in south africa between the white and the black and your aim is to learn from both parties & bring peace in the world, even if some will hinder you from it.

-Computer crashed losing all my files, including this game I was working on.

-Thinking I was short on time I started making a quick game, which didn't turn out as fun as I hoped.

-Seeing that the tournament wasn't ending, I moved onto a more complex game.

With the current game I'm having a few technical issues which slowed the progress down, so I'm no where near complete.  I had the intent to compete, but with computer issues and not having an end date set to the tournament, I don't think I'll be able to enter.

I haven't been frequenting the forums as of late, and failed to respond to my PMs, but I still have an idea and game in the works that I hope to be able to submit before you cut off the entries.

Stupid paranoid me, I was thinking everyone blew this off.  :( Seeing the reasons that you guys have, I think it's fine to let you keep competing.

crozier, I'd actually like an actual end date on this competition since 7 people aren't competing.

Ok peeps I'm back. Thanks everyone for the posts and a few members sent specific pms. I accept your apology Forum, I am pretty crappy at GM myself. And pin all your stuff looks superb! And sucks you lost your stuff; it happens everyone at least once. Looks like a Canadian flag is in that first screen shot eh?
Well glad we (Judges and I) brought everyone kinda back to this.
See everyone later

I'm currently looking for spriting resources. Is anyone here interested to show me some samples of him/her? Or can someone provide me a nice website with 2d spriting resources. I've searched up google already but found nothing good except rip offs from existing trademarked games, which I obviously do not want.

Has this been forgotten? I'm starting to think about replacing my current entry with Blockster 2 once it's done.

BTW Crozier, I suggest you put the links to the entries on the first page so you and the judges don't have to search through the topic for our games.

Disregarding the 120 day message, here is a bump.

@Clock I have placed the links on the first page.

We have 2 entrances so far.
Matty pmed me recently with a link to his (incomplete?) game, and I snatched clock's link from an earlier post.

Those of you who have completed any games within the last like 8 months :p can enter.
Pms will start arriving at the doorsteps of the competetors soon.

Many thanks guys, and send me the links to the games you have made somewhat recently.
