Title: Einstein's Riddle
Post by: Kiegruen on April 13, 2011, 10:40:05 PM
Apparently Einstein wrote this riddle. He said that 98% of the world would not be able to solve it! Let's see if we can prove him wrong. I still haven't figured it out but I've only worked on it for 30 mins or so in total, so let's see if we can solve it together:

There are 5 houses painted in different colors in a row on a street. In each house lives a person with a different nationality. The 5 owners each drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar, and keep a certain pet. No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar, nor drink the same beverage.

Hints:

The Brit lives in the red house.
The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
The Dane drinks tea.
The green house is on the left of the white house.
The green house's owner drinks coffee.
The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.
The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.
The person living in the center house drinks milk.
The Norwegian lives in the leftmost house.
The person who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
The person who keeps the horse lives next to the person who smokes Dunhill.
The owner who smokes Bluemasters drinks beer.
The German smokes Prince.
The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
The person who smokes Blends has a neighbor who drinks water.

What is the nationality of the person who owns the fish?  ???

The German!

Edit: Don't tell me right off the bat if I'm right or not just to give others a chance to solve it.

98% of people can't solve that?  It took me about 10 minutes on my whiteboard o.O.  I got the answer, and I got the picture of the whiteboard to prove it.  Not gonna post it yet, so as to not spoil it for anyone who wants to figure it out themselves.

Spoiler:

It's the German.

If you lay it out in a table format, using the columns of the table as the house numbers, and the rows as the different nationalities, it works out in a matter of 10-15 minutes.  I got it with 100% certainty.

EDIT: Spoiler -
I'd believe that back in the 1920's, people would have a hard time solving this, but today, not so much.  Case in point that 3/4 (not including the OP) took the time to try it, and worked it out in comparatively minimal time.

You could always solve the riddle by a psychological standpoint and ask yourself,  "Would Einstein have his nationality be the center of the riddle."  Is he that kind of egocentric person?

And yes.  Yes he was.

But then again you can only say that after it is solved.

Funny, I thought the same thing after solving it.

You guys who said German were correct! Good job! It actually wasn't all that hard after you make a grid...

@Chaos I know, it's surprising but I think it may be true to a degree, knowing all the stupid people I have to put up with daily...

Honestly, it reminded me of a Sudoku but with words.

Got it 10 minutes after Chaos pointed out that the green house wasn't just somewhere to the left of the white house, but DIRECTLY to the left of the white house. I had spent hours before that completely befuddled.
