Kinda surprised no one else posted anything about this. Ludum Dare is a 48-hour game making competition that just so happened to be taking place this weekend:

All the games have to made from scratch in the period of 48 hours. Not sure on the exact rules, since the site is currently having troubles. This competition's theme is 'Escape'. I spent a good portion of today on Notch's live stream watching him code his. :3 As of this post, there are 50 minutes left til the end of the competition.
Iv had notch stream on all day. Fun watch. Thanks for topic!

The only real reason this is getting any major attention (in my opinion) is because Notch contributed to it. There's no prizes, no awards, nothing other than "their products" as they put it. If it weren't for people like Notch, it wouldn't really be anything to speak of, especially after viewing a majority of the content that has been contributed.
Eh, I had heard about it way before Notch was talking about it. I guess I figured it was more well known.
The first time I've heard about it was on his blog like 2 days ago... And since I'm usually well informed about stuff like that it must be some event really inferior to anything of its type =/
I retract my previous assumption that this is not a well known contest. I second guessed my assumption when I realized that the 21 in ludum dare 21 means 20 previous competitions prior to this one, the original dating back to 2002. Some had well known themes that I recall hearing, especially their last theme from their April (of this year) competition, titled: "It?s Dangerous to go Alone! Take this!" (and I mean that in the sense that I recognized that from a game competition I knew little of, and didn't pursue to find out until now, not just from a classic video game we're all likely aware of).

Carry on discussing from a knowledgeable standpoint, and not one of my own ignorance.
