Title: Diamond Planet
Post by: DarkTrinity on August 26, 2011, 03:28:57 PM
Yes, a planet made primarily of carbon was recently discovered. Meaning the solid part of it is made of diamond. *o*
Sparkly planet, I wanna go ;D
"a year on planet diamond [is] just two hours long."

The point of this article isn't the perceived monetary value of the planet.

This is quite awesome.

I was going to say, wasn't it a star? Apparently it used to be a star in a binary system with a pulsar, so yes. Diamond Star, Diamond Planet... whatever. It's pretty cool.

Geez, I can't even wonder about something like that? That's a big freaking diamond. I knew someone would snap at me for no reason, but I didn't think it would be you.

Is it any surprise that one of the few female members we have is the one to make the topic about a planet made of diamond?   ;)

The value of diamonds will most definitely decrease drastically if one was to be able to mine that planet, aha. However, very awesome.

Hehe. :3
It's equally my love for astronomy and the vast things unknown out there that I find immensely intriguing.
But I will not deny that I love sparkly things ;D

Though I'm willing to bet that the surface of the planet is not just sparkly pretty clear diamonds. But how awesome would it be if you were to come near the planet and the entire thing DID sparkle like mad from the nearest star? *o*

@Lingus: I've heard it called a star, but I don't see how it could technically be called that, being as stars are just balls of gas and not solid? I just don't get that part o.o

Well, in the article it says they think it was originally a star which was part of a binary system (two stars in orbit around eachother). The larger star ripped the outer layer of the smaller star, leaving only the heavier elements (mostly carbon). Because of the density the carbon became crystaline which makes it a solid.

But... then it's not a star anymore.. it's a big rock D: Or a dead star?
This star is now diamonds? :)

As soon as it's possible to be worth something, it would be worth nothing. Theorectically. They say that thing is 5x the size of earth. Once we have access to that much diamond, it's not worth much. It would only be worth as much as it takes to mine it from there to here, which by the time we can do so, is probably not a huge deal. I would imagine with access to that much Diamond that we would begin to use Diamond in many more ways. Remember, it is the hardest material we have, or something along those lines, and is often used for cutting. Obviously we would use it in a much grander scale if it was financially feasible.

Yea imagine how much the cost would be to excavate all that diamond, you'd end up spending more then you'd profit from extracting it and bringing it all the way back to Earth... Plus you would have to pay a ass load to the people mining all of the diamond.
