So, Lucy-fur and I have been discussing an idea we had. Pretty much, the idea has been creating a website for Yu-Gi-Oh that would be similar to the SO PVP League.
Essentially, what would happen is that you'd register on the website, and you would receive about 5 'booster packs'. It would display what cards you received in those booster packs and list them on your account. You would then proceed to build a deck with those cards in the program Yugioh Virtual Duel (http://xerocreative.com/?goto=downloads) (a program that allows you to build decks and duel against other people over the internet), and use it to duel other members.
After you finish a duel, you submit the YVD Duel Log to the site, so we can confirm your victory over your opponent. Assuming you were victorious, we would proceed to update your Duelist Ranking accordingly, and award you 'Duelist Points', the amount varying upon your Duelist Ranking compared to your opponent.
Duelist Points would then be used on the "Card Shop" page of the site. You go there and can spend your earned points to purchase new booster packs from the shop, the cards of which will then be added to your list of 'owned' cards on your account. The available booster packs would consist of the first booster, "Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon", and I would add a new booster pack every month onward.
To prevent cheating, your list of 'owned' cards would be publicly viewable by others on the site, so other members and site ops can verify the legitimacy of your deck. This would also serve to facilitate the final function on the site, the ability to make offers and trade your virtual stock of cards with other members to make your own personal deck of awesome.
In summary, what this site would do is have you register an account that keeps track of a Duelist Ranking, Duelist Points, and a virtual stock of Yugioh cards to duel with. You can then proceed to duel other members to increase your ranking, earn yourself Duelist Points which you can then spend in the Card Shop, and additionally trade your cards with your fellow duelists to build yourself an awesome deck and propel yourself to the top of the league!
My question to you, dear SO members, would anyone be interested in participating in such a thing? Luc has done some preliminary discussion with Igufed about creating such a site, and I've considered speaking to Scott about whether he'd be interested (alas, I know he's been very busy lately). Before we even consider asking anyone to spend time and effort helping us create such a website, we want to gauge people's interests and see if it'd be worthwhile. So vote, dear SO members! Let us know your thoughts!
EDIT: Additionally, I, and Lucifer to a lesser extent, are well versed in the rules of Yugioh, and would be willing to teach anyone who wants to learn and play in the Duelist League.
I would love this! I used to play with my brothers alot, but alas, over time the cards have been lost. I even used to have a Slyther the Sky Dragon :D
Hell yeah that's a great idea, can we choose which booster packs we get?
This sounds really awesome. I rather enjoy the fact that the cards we get are random and not just picked by us. I would do this.
The current thought is that the initial 5 or so boosters would be from Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon. Alternatively, we could award the new account enough duelist points to purchase 5 packs of their own choosing. The boosters you purchase from the shop will be whichever one you select from the ones available. Additionally, since one would, in theory, not be able to purchase any boosters if they continued to lose all their duels (and thus never be able to get stronger), I'm also considering adding a weekly or bi-monthly awarding of a booster pack of the most recently released, so even if you weren't able to play an entire month, you'd still have obtained at least 2-4 packs from that set.
I've been pondering using the Japanese versions of the packs between Legend of Blue Eyes and Ancient Sanctuary, since all those English boosters were two Japanese boosters put together (Legend of Blue Eyes was originally the Japanese "Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon" and "Phantom God", English Metal Raiders was originally Japanese "Revival of Black Demon's Dragon" and "Metal Raiders"). Essentially, the cards we got in our boosters were the same as the Japanese ones, we just got 2 packs rolled into. After Ancient Sanctuary, our packs fell in line with Japanese card lists.
I've also been considering reworking the rarities of the cards to follow more logically according to strength. Using the TCG LOB booster as an example, Tri-Horned Dragon and Gaia the Dragon Champion were Secret Rares, Celtic Guardian, Mystical Elf, and Polymerization were Super Rares. Meanwhile, Raigeki, Dark Hole and Swords of the Revealing Light were Supers and Pot of Greed was a standard RARE. Dark Hole and Swords would be bumped up to Ultra, and Pot of Greed and Raigkei would become the Secret Rares. Tri-Horned Dragon and Gaia the Dragon Champion would become Ultras, Mystical Elf would become a Rare, Polymerization would become either a Rare or Common, and Celtic Guardian would become a Common.
Weight in on each of these decisions, tell me what you think.
Receive 5 Legend of the Blue Eyes White Dragon, or receive Duelist Points and let you buy your own packs? (when the site is launched, LOB will be the only booster initially available anyway.)
Award extra boosters every month, or make people win and earn their packs?
Use the TCG Booster Pack Lists or the OCG Booster Pack Lists?
Rework the rarities to follow the power of a card, or keep them the way they originally were?
5 blue-eyes to start
extra boosters each month
TCG for simplicity
and if you're willing to put the time in to rework the rarities, definitely go for it but that could be a bit of a hassle to go through each booster
I'd be up for assisting with the site, seems fairly straight forward enough without having to do anything extremely difficult. Let me know if you need my assistance with anything.
I'm down. Probably gonna need to refresh myself on how to play, as it's been forever. I'm curious though, do we get to choose any card we desire in our deck as long as it's a legal deck?
EDIT: I see you all discussing some sort of card selection method above, but am sort of confused about the boosters and all this junk you all are mentioning, so any clarification would be appreciated.

This. But also, you could award a small amount of duelist points to losers to allow them to eventually buy cards.
Sounds like a pretty sweet idea lol. I like it and support it, but I may not be that active on it. But I would definitely join in!
I would love this.
Though for the future booster packs, you might want to rework the legality of certain cards on your own and not go by the standard legal deck, because it wasn't until many booster packs later that some cards got their overpowered niche. (i.e. Magical Scientist)
I'd actually enjoy this a lot. I haven't found anything decent to play lately, and I used to play Yugioh back in the day, so why not? 8)
Also, you should think about a system for trading back(selling?) cards for duelist points. This way, if someone has multiple cards that they don't need and no one wants to trade for, they can use the points for another booster pack. Each cards worth could be based upon rarity I suppose.
@Mystery: The plan is to start off with no bans or restrictions. The likely changes in rarity and inability to just easily purchase a ton of packs (unlike in real life) will restrict the potential for rare cards becoming wide spread, and help prevent 'staples' from forming. If it gets to the point where really powerful cards are becoming too widespread and dominating the game, at that point I would starting instituting restrictions.
@Jmacrules: I considered creating a system where you could 'destroy' 3 cards in your stock to receive a new one, but nothing has been decided quite yet. I prefer to encourage trading to get the cards you want. This way people can pick a certain theme or strategy they want and attempt to trade the cards that don't fit their deck for ones that do, which won't be done if everyone just destroys the cards they don't need.
So, Igufed has already been hard at work getting the site up and running. Feedback has been resoundingly positive, so we're going forward with this. I've decided that, to provide a larger base to build starting decks from, we will be using the TCG Legend of Blue-Eyes White Dragon pack, and then using the OCG versions of the packs from then on. (May use Metal Raiders TCG version as well, though. Haven't decided yet).
I have decided to change up the rarities appropriately and am rather pleased with the results. Additionally, I have decided to remove Tri-Horned Dragon from the LOB pack, in favour of the card that was in that slot of the pack in the OCG, De-Spell. Tri-Horned Dragon will be instead be placed in the Promo Pack system, where all the other non-booster cards will be available. The Promo Pack system will be a separate purchase in the Card Shop which will give you one random card from a selection of cards that are not normally available in booster packs.
As it stands right now, creating an account will give you either 5 or 6 packs of LOB to start with. Since a number of fusion monsters are now commons, it may be a better idea to give 6 packs just so we can ensure one has enough cards to build a deck with.
Lastly, I will probably have players receive a free pack bi-monthly.
So stoked. I just wanna open those packs right now and see what I get. It's like waiting for christmas!
How goes the website development? :P

Not too bad, really. We're making progress. I don't have a time frame for completion, yet, though. But, it is being worked on.
Yep, and I got fed up with the initial booster packs and all the promos and the rarities and all the crap, so I pretty much scrapped the current boosters entirely, for something a little different.
Instead, what I've done is gathered up a list of all the cards released in Japan's OCG during Series 1 (before Magic Ruler), picked out all the cards that have been released in English TCG, (a total of 483 cards!) and I'm going to build modified 120-card boosters, using the names of the 4 booster packs from the OCG, Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon, Phantom God, Revival of Black Skull Dragon, and Metal Raiders.
That way, we don't end up getting cards like Cyber Shield (released in Japan in 1999 as a promo for Dark Duel Stories, released in English in 2010(!) in Storm of Ragnarok booster) ages after their usefulness has passed, and I don't have to mess around with making some sort of system for promo cards. I'm simply going to integrate the extra cards right into the booster packs. Additionally, this allows me to balance the support among all the different types of monsters (warriors are ridiculously over-represented early on. 14 Warriors cards in TCG LOB. Compare to 7 Dragon, 4 of which require tributes, 7 Spellcasters, and even less for every other monster Type).
I had an addiction to Yugioh a long time ago, and I don't want to get sucked back into it again :/ I had hundreds of cards.
@Chaos, Will you be using the banlists/card limits that are currently being used? I just want to know because cards from LoB, like Pot of Greed and Raigeki are limited nowadays.
Btw, I've been playing ROM's of the DS games to refresh my memory on the rules. This game brings back memories...the majority of them bad, but still, thanks for having this idea Chaos. Thanks to everyone helping also! ;)
Those cards are BANNED nowadays. But no, I plan to have no ban or limitation list in effect, initially. As we go on, if things become a problem, I'll take care of them then, but currently I'm trying to take advantage of the rarity system to limit the powerful cards and see how it goes. Raigeki and Pot of Greed, for example, will be Secret Rares. Assuming things go as planned, few people will have even one of them, much less both, or multiples of both. You won't be able to just buy tons of packs, you have to duel and earn points to afford packs, so simply mass-buying until you get one won't be feasible.
I would love to participate! I'm not following the whole trend lately (because the new generation pretty much anal-!@#$ed the TCG, literally)... But I believe I could still compete.

Not too bad. Currently getting the layout/design sorted. Big things left to do are the rating system(easy/quick), card shop(easy), and trading(haven't thought much about this one to determine, yet). Those are the big 3 things left to do. Along with some small things here and there.
I still don't think we have an estimate on completion, though. But, it is being worked on bit by bit.
Edit: You(anyone) can always add me on msn if you're curious about the progress or any specifics.

As you probably remember GIS back in the SO hangout days we used the Yugioh Virtual Duel program. Whilst a great program, it was always slightly iffy in that it required the use of Hamachi, and commonly ran into errors while trying to connect. We've found a smexy alternative!
http://www.duelingnetwork.com/
This is an online version of YVD, with built-in matchmaking capabilities and a smoother overall layout. The only downside we've noticed thus far is the fact that the website follows the official banlist, and as far as we can see you can't completely get around that. It allows you to play in Traditional format, but this simply allows one of each banned card to be used. I hope to use this website as an easier hamachi-free approach to dueling, but we'll see.
For now, I encourage anyone to try it out and message me on MSN for a duel! As of late myself, my friend Noah, Jake, Chaos, and Chaos's friend Mat have been dueling frequently and using Scotty's Teamspeak; which, is still up and open to anyone.

Speaking as someone who stills fully remembers how to play and recently became acquainted with all the new card types and changes, what kind of deck would you recommend I use? I'm not familiar with what's good, what's been banned and what kinds of decks have become obsolete since I stopped buying cards when the Cybernetic Revolution pack was out. I had a pretty darn good Chaos deck.
EDIT: Wow, what the actual !@#$ happened to my post. :(
Aah! Huge block of repeated text!
Anyways,

I couldn't really tell you what to use, there's a lot of decks out there that are pretty damn nasty. Recently I've been seeing a lot of Holy Mark decks, as the dueling network seems to stock new OCG releases the second they come out. Holy Marks are NASTY... They have a large focus on some crazy XYZ monsters, and the capability to tribute monsters whilst in their hand to activate their effects. I personally run Skull Servants with Synchro and XYZ mixed in, Ojamas, and a very disfunctional Venom deck. Recently made counter trap fairies, but I'm still working out the kinks.
o, thank both of you guys for the info ! hamachi was definitely a hassle for me so i'm trying out that dueling site right now.
I've never heard of Holy Marks... But I do have an XYZ deck in real life. I love it. It's my friend. Haha
Alright, new question time:
We have two major programs we can use for dueling for the league - Yugioh Virtual Duel, and Dueling Network.
Dueling Network:
Pros
-Has all cards from both TCG and OCG available
-Has much nicer graphics and sounds
-Has much easier match-making set-up
Cons
-Lacking in necessary card effect support (no counter support, etc.)
-Unable to do custom ban lists
YVD:
Pros
-All cards are functional within the program
-Able to shut off the in-program list so we can use a custom ban list
Cons
-Is lacking early OCG cards (potentially averted by using OCG Mode?)
-Is visually lacking
-Needs port forwarding or hamachi to duel.
So, as I'm making up the packs, the question that everything currently hinges on for my set files is whether I should include the early OCG only cards or not. If I do, we won't be able to use YVD (unless we use OCG mode, and that has its own set of problems), but if we only use Dueling Network, we will have no support for custom ban lists, and can cause potential card issues in the future (though hopefully, by the time we get to the cards that can cause those problems, it will be fixed).
I say we should all start transitioning to the dueling network. I'm pretty it's only a matter of time before the update and fix the counters issue and others. It seems fast growing and a lot of people play it. While YVD has been glitchy on my computer since day 1 and I'm tired of using Hamachi, because sometimes it does not work.
Just an update on the progress of the site.
It's coming together nicely; I'd say it is 85% complete. The layout is coming together great, thanks to Scotty.
There is only 1 major thing left to do, which is the trading aspect of the site. Everything else is mainly changing how information is displayed and smaller backend things..
Optimistically, I think the site could be completed in the next couple of weeks depending on any additions/changes Scotty or Chaos want to do.
So, sit tight, I think we're almost there.. :)
Definitely YVD
Okay, well, the site is nearing completion. There's a few things that still need to be finished, like trading, but I've actually finished compiling together the entire series 1, with every card released in the OCG during that time (717 total cards!) into 5 143-145 card booster packs: Booster Chronicle, Legend of Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Phantom God, Revival of Black Skull Dragon, and Metal Raiders.
I've completely reworked both the rarities and card lists of these packs as a result, and I want to run a short 'beta-test' to make sure the first pack, Booster Chronicle, has sufficient balance. The beta will probably last about a week or two, and will give me a chance to test the balance of the first booster pack before we got full release. Anyone who wants to help with the testing, send me a PM here on the forum with your desired username and e-mail, and you should receive an e-mail with details.
PLEASE NOTE: The card list you obtain during the beta-test will be blanked before we go live, since the cards obtainable will be subject to changes.

As in the cards we have in our profile, right?
I guess I'd better make the most of Morphing Jar and Swords of Revealing Light while I still have them. :( Only 2 cards I have which would be of some use later on.

Yup, those cards in your profile along with the stats for each player will be blanked and start from scratch once it's officially up and running.
