SOPA is trying to be run through the government this week, despite the talk of delays and massive public outburst against it.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-57345187-281/senate-will-vote-next-month-on-protect-ip-copyright-bill/
The Protect IP Act, however, is luckily going to wait a bit longer until January 24 since this post.
So yeah, I'm a little surprised I still haven't seen a topic about this. I'm sure most of you know at least a little bit about it.
It's another 'US government screwing over everything' ordeal, except as far as those tend to go, this is a very nasty one.
Several people, corporations, and other entities are pushing for both the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act in the US government. They already have several sponsors and some support behind them. If either/both of these bills are passed, enormous regulations and restrictions will be set in place for US ISPs. Which affects EVERYONE. In a nutshell, for even a HINT of something which might be intellectual property taken out of context(LP's, videos, fan-made stuff, discussion), ISPs have full right to deny access or even blacklist IPs under these. And obviously, this won't do anything to combat piracy, this will encourage much more. If they pass, the Internet, the best experiment ever in free information and resources, will be utterly crippled indefinitely.
You can read SOPA in its entirety here (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h112-3261) and see just HOW BAD this is for yourself.
You can read the Protect IP Act here (http://leahy.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/BillText-PROTECTIPAct.pdf) as well.
Thoughts, questions, and comments?
I hope this bill has the same fate as S.978. Over 60% (possibly 70) in the U.S. know what the internet is. On that note, there is no way that a law restricting access to the good of people will pass.

You're joking right?
What is this new fangled internet people keep talking about?
I really hope this thing doesn't get passed. It will make it so much harder to pirate stuff.

:-\
It'll make it hard to do ANYTHING on the Internet, period. And I'm sure pirates will find some way eventually to keep pirating 'more' widespread.
I'm more worried about these
because of them having more support than S.978 did. I'm also surprised because they seem to be generating less worry as well overall.

HUGE difference between "user" and "number of people using internet", and an even bigger difference between "use" and "know about" I bet more than 78% of people use the internet, seeing that multiple people use the same computer and that is most likely how they get their statistics, it could be much higher. Also, go down a street in the US, and ask some what what the internet is, either the person will call you a !@#$ing moron, or will tell you at least SOMETHING about it. The only population who doesn't know what the internet is, are younger than 6, or don't live in an area with any internet.

True. When I posted this, I had remembered that statistic over a month ago, and I had slightly derived from what it was. If I was wiser, I would have retyped that sentence by looking it up and then saying it. The people that would know the internet might as well be way over 80%. How you say this, it could be over 90. It didn't tell about the U.S. though, (unless I had missed a certain link) so I had to guess a little.

Woooow. If all that is true, that's !@#$ed up.
If SOPA still gets passed even with all that evidence, I think the government will have mass mobs of angry people on their hands.
(Also the story of the US trying to bring the UK kid over here to put him in jail for 5 years... I feel embarrassed for our country over that... wow)
Have you guys been hearing about GoDaddy? They supported SOPA, and then hundreds of thousands of their domains straight up transferred services and boycotted them. They took back their support for SOPA in under 24 hours, shit was crazy.

To be completely honest, with my straight up hatred of Godaddy, i was hoping they wouldn't back down and this would act as the shovel for their inevitable grave; alas I am disappointed. If there's a web company out there (registrar, hosting, both, etc...) that needs to die off, it's Godaddy.
But this is why Americans shouldn't own the internet. It should be a equally owned by everyone. The Americans didnt even create the internet but they still say they did and say they have every right to own it.
And thus stupid "bills" are created because people whine about shit that shouldn't be whined about. Plus these "bills" will not effect anyone outside America or shouldn't unless its passed in an international court. I am not saying this to all Americans, (but mainly their government) but you guys keep on trying to own everything and keep trying to be better then everyone else.
No offence was meant in this post. I am just posting my opinion.

"This debate is about preserving, protecting, and creating American jobs, and protecting American consumers from the dangers that they face on-line," the statement reads. "US businesses are getting robbed and US consumers are getting duped."
All time favourite quote supporting SOPA. From GoDaddy.
I think the most moronic thing is that they're trying to regulate other countries use of the internet with this one stupid bill. Trying to extradite foreigners to America to prosecute them for something totally legal in their country?? All I can say is *facepalm*
And with SOPA, I've lost all faith in the intelligence of our government. Piracy is completely legal in other countries, we're not the world police, and I am ashamed of the government for trying to do so on such a pointless matter. (pointless in comparison to say countries in war/poverty/whatever who actually want our involvement)
If this is passed, what should I do about all of the pirated stuff on my harddrive? Heck, my operating system was pirated. Pretty much any software I have ever used has been pirated. Should I delete them?
Quote from: Freeforall on December 24, 2011, 12:44:18 PM

Uhhh, how the hell would they know they're pirated?
The problem is that our congress is ridiculously corrupt. The entire lobbying system going on in the United States is broken as !@#$. These big entertainment industry companies (aka, big, whiny, greedy babies) go and lobby to these congressmen about all their 'interests', while also giving them millions of dollars in 'campaign donations' (aka, bribes. Yes, bribery is essentially legal). In result, our congress bends over and and makes themselves the bitches of these corporations.
All those people who argue against piracy because it hurts these big companies and they won't be able to keep doing what they are doing? GOOD. I WANT THESE CORPORATIONS TO DIE. When an area of nature becomes overgrown, it's a natural part of the cycle for it to burn to the ground and begin anew from the ashes. Let Hollywood and the RIAA burn to the ground, so new, fresh, more intelligent 'life' can take its place.
P.S.: As per the OpenCongress.org blog:
Quote from: www.OpenCongress.org/blogAs 2011 ends, the first session of the 112th U.S. Congress stumbles to a bad-faith curtain. The third branch of federal government in our representative democracy, Congress is down to a new record-low 11% approval rating, as per Gallup News this week. "This earns Congress a 17% yearly average for 2011, the lowest annual congressional approval rating in Gallup history," they report.
As long as money remains in politics, and the president doesn't fire our bought congress, we're screwed. People like the entertainment industry waive their dollars in front of politicians so that they get their votes (bribery as Chaos said), and of course politicians are gonna take that money. They're too greedy not too. Industries come to them and say "Hey, we'll fund your candidacy if you remain incapable of making legislation on healthcare, trade, banking, taxes, because we'll tell you what we want. All you have to do is raise your hand and say yay when the vote comes around. Be warned though, if you grow a brain or balls, we'll take that money away from you." Until money is removed from politics, we'll be repeating this among many other larger issues (tens of trillions in debt anyone?) for decades to come.

The whole debate is (forgive the onslaught of profanity) !@#$ing bullshit. I mean this with a bleeding heart, everyone needs to lay off the militaristic (anti?) religion. Oppressive Christians, Jews, Atheists, Muslims, doesn't !@#$ing matter, for some reason everyone feels the need to piss in each other's Cheerios if they're either offended or offending. Everyone points the finger the other way, and no resolution is possible. If you can't, you are a douche pickle that pisses people off, and causes stupid, meaningless, frivolous, and otherwise bullshit arguments that take away from human evolution and sets us back in our natural course of progression. The reason we have politicians talking about religion is because people who don't believe in that religion are pissed off and want to have independence, and the people who feel the need to preach freedom of religion do it because believers want to convert them.
Someone please tell me that what I'm saying makes sense so I don't feel stupid.
Lol, shockingly, it makes sense.
I'm a firm believer in being open minded, I'm atheist but I don't go around telling other people they should be, heck I usually don't even mention it unless I'm asked first. I'm fine if people want to tell be about their religion, I'm all for education about other peoples' lives and how they chose to live it. Learning more can't hurt, but when people try to tell me that their religion is right(or better) and everyone elses' is wrong it just makes them sound like close-minded, arrogant, uneducated douche bags.
Usually I try not to start an argument that atheism is better though, because with religion there's rarely anything you can say to change someones belief anyways, so it's a worthless battle. They'll still sit there and tell you " God loves you, he'll forgive you if you own up to your sins and come over to the light side. I want to save your soul, come to church with me".
Sorry, Flying Spaghetti Monster loves my soul the way it is, thanks.

Seems Godaddy has finally outright announced they are opposed to SOPA. Not entirely sure why, as they actually gained more domain registrations than what they lost on the ditch Godaddy day... Then again, according to the numbers, they are going to lose over $500k annual revenue (assuming $10 per domain per year) from those that did leave on Friday.
I guess I was ambitious in hoping that this was going to take a toll on Godaddy, I should have known better than to think that sleezebag company would actually take a hit from this. Most people who register their domains through them probably don't even know about SOPA.
Still, their Evony-esque business model isn't stopping them from trying to make amends with the customers who haven't ditched them:

It's their most powerful weapon. The biggest bullshit that people will continue to believe no matter who tells them that. It's so well made, the closest of friends are ready to spit at each other just because of their different religiosity standpoints. Most of people are brainwashed in their early age by their own brainwashed parents, it's a god damn cycle of irrationality, fear and selfishness.
I see where you come from, I've been thinking about it a lot too, but in reality there's no helping it. It's already mostly subcouncional, I could name 40 people that would spit and throw shit at me if I was to share my own "filthy, ignorant, non-believing" thoughts about religion, but they would still call themself my friends. It serves as an argument in everything, everything happens because it's god's god damn will. I am not an atheist, I believe in an entity that created the universe and life, but not a "god" represented by any of our religions. I also don't call them foolish for believing, I personally think faith nourishes your life pretty well. I call them foolish for their judgmental and ignorant personalities (which most of religious fanatics posses).
Sorry about this rant, I just felt like I could freely state my own opinion.

I disagree. In the lds church we are taught not to do that because, "People close their minds and their hearts." It is their weakest weapon and worst tool. We are taught to "lead by example." I'll give an example of what I mean with a long boring story. No religion in the world has ever been allowed to build anything on what is considered the "holy ground" in Jerusalem to the Jewish faith, except the lds. We were allowed to build BYU-J on the terms that if we ever preached even a single word, it would be torn down that day and the people there would be imprisoned. Upon the final day of construction the leader of Jerusalem came to discuss and make sure they all understood the terms of agreement. Upon acknowledgement from everyone he said "That's good, but now what am I supposed to do about that look in your eye."
tl;dr
Essentially, people notice. They see your actions far more than any words you could ever yell at them.
tl;drttl;dr
Disagree.

Honestly, I can understand, if not agree with companies who support the idea, not the execution. Think about it, why is everyone up in arms over SOPA? It's likely one of two reasons: Either they want to be able to pirate shit, or they read between the lines and realize this legislation is going to allow for some very damaging acts of restricting free speech, at a level where someone can't even post up their wedding dance with their significant other on youtube because of the background music (as an example).
I can understand people wanting to protect their stuff, and if a good piece of legislation came out that would allow them to do that without having such a broad capability for abuse, I'd probably support it, because morally, that's the right thing for me. Think about it, if you put hard earned money into creating something only to have it ripped off (and I do mean flat out ripped off, not some mambsy-pambsy background music or torrent, I mean flat out stolen and relabeled to give someone else credit), wouldn't you be a bit pissed and perhaps want to prevent that?

Yea, I relate it to artwork. Like on DeviantArt (and of course other places on the internet), there's a problem with people stealing other peoples' work, posting it as their own and then trying to sell prints of it. That's straight up stealing. But there's a difference between that and say someone posting your work on their own site, sharing it with their friends, because they really like your work (even if they don't get permission from you). -the latter I would relate to a song in your wedding video or w/e-
If someone's outright ripping you off, taking credit and making a profit off your work, then by all means take em down.

No it's not. It's a "hey look everyone we aren't supporting SOPA anymore don't rape us." It's not a true dropping of support, they are just hiding their support now.

Essentially, people notice. They see your actions far more than any words you could ever yell at them.
What do you mean by this? That people can't use religion as a political tool? I hope you're joking. You can twist any religion to fit any kind of message you want.
I could campaign for the return of slavery saying the Mormon God wants it, by pulling out some of the mark of Cain scriptures or Joseph Smith's articles on abolition. Sure not every Mormon would agree but it would be a hell of a lot easier to say my god hates black people than to say I just hate black people.
I think that as long as Sony has any part in supporting SOPA, anonymous is going to wreck them. They aren't stupid enough to just back off because they stopped supporting it themselves but still support people who support it. So either way, until their complete support is backed out, Sony is in for a world of hurt.

Ah but you couldn't do that. You could try, but you couldn't. If you knew how the lds religion works you'd understand that. As for this whole saying it can't be used as a political tool, how do you even get near that meaning out of what I said? I was talking about the way people shutdown when you yell your belief at them. Soo, I'd go back and try reading again.

I'm saying they wouldn't shut down if you said god wanted it instead. It's one thing to say you want 1 policy and another to say one policy has to be instated because god wants it.

Maybe I'm confused on what you're trying to say, or maybe I missed something... But if someone went up to me and told me a policy has to pass because god wants it, I'd laugh at them and walk away. That sounds like something that would only work for gullible people.. x.x

Hint: most americans are gullible. Also I probably should've explained myself more.
You apply religion to a group of people, and then make your decisions and say god wants it. As for the idort lingus quoted saying we were founded on "in god we trust", he should know that our founding fathers weren't even christian. The word god isn't even in the constitution.

Where will I find a massive list of misconceptions now?!
Gotta love that wikipedia is down, google is displaying a banner on it, i can haz cheezburger is informing people, over 100 websites all show you something on SOPA or PIPA today. Don't think this bill will ever pass. Youtube even has a side of the page full of Anti-SOPA videos.
For anyone that needs access to Wikipedia today, found two nifty JQuery commands that will hide the SOPA div. Open up a Javascript Console in your browser (Chrome is Ctrl-Shift-J) and paste the following two javascript commands, hit enter, and blamo:
$("div").css("display", "inherit");
$("#mw-sopaOverlay").css("display", "none");

Go ahead, ask. You know you want to. You got at least half a stiffy thinking about it!
After my exam today I had an hour left during class, so I got on a computer and began looking up things to do.
Reddit? Down.
Wikipedia? Down
Oatmeal? Down
Cyanide and Happiness? Down
I was getting desperate, my 4 main sources of entertainment were running dry, and all my other favorite websites were censored by the school's internet. I turned to my last resort, Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal, the only webcomic to make me laugh out loud, ever.
DOWN.
Damn you SOPA....

Only half? I think you underestimate how much your perversion leaks into this forum and corrupts everyone around. I'd say you should be a dictator, but then everyone would love koala-goat sex, and we can't have that.
I guess its kinda related, Megaupload has been shut down.

Megaupload has been under fire well before the SOPA hype. They were brought down for illegal file sharing (surprise, surprise). Not even sure if they are hosted outside of the USA (purportedly the only grounds in which SOPA can be enacted), but they've had this coming for some time.
Looks like the age ol' "We are not responsible for how our users may abuse our services" disclaimer doesn't mean farts after all!
My youtube page has pirated content on it, will it be shut down?
And what about my computer? Nearly everything on here isn't legitimate.
The bill hasn't been voted on yet, not til the 24th..

It must sicken you that I'm not the only one out there with such a perverse sense of humor, and that others who are just as bad, if not worse hit CNN headlines:

Self-inflicted ADD is a beautiful achievement my friend.
Looks like PIPA is on its way out the door, with both majority and minority leaders opposing it now:
