Title: Lag spikes again.
Post by: Freeforall on March 25, 2012, 05:40:42 PM
I am getting lag spikes in games, and I don't think I should be.

i5 2320 Quad Core 3GHz
16GB DDR3 RAM
Overclocked ZOTAC GTX 560 TI 1GB
Windows 7 Home Premium

In Minecraft, BF3, Dead Island, and any other game, I get lag spikes every couple of seconds. WHY?

Lag spikes don't apply to your computer specs unless your wireless card is shit. If you mean FPS drops, then yes. Lag is caused by your internet services being sub-optimal. To fix lag, make sure you arn't running any downloads in the background. Common things involve steam updates/installs, untorrent downloads/seeding. I know you from a while back so i'm going to assume you pirate quite a bit :b. Check those to start.

Edit:
Forgot to mention, lag will also be present depending on how many devices are running through your network too. Self explanatory to fix that one.

For Reference here's mine:
(I normally don't lag while playing games/Live streaming with these numbers. Everyone gets spikes though once in a while. I also have about 7 devices connected to my network)

Nah, it's not my internet, it's my framerate. It randomly spikes for no reason.

Check to make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card, if you haven't already.

Besides that, without being able to investigate first hand, you mention that you are overclocking your video card. If not done properly, this can lead to lots of issues. Make sure your video card is not overheating, as that could lead to the issues you are describing.

Well, it was factory overclocked, so I don't think that's the case, but I could be wrong.

I ran a extreme benchmarking program called 'Furmark' for 5 minutes at 1080p, and the card reached 99C, is that bad? I only know Fahrenheit, I am not familiar with Celsius.

Try looking at your task manager processes and their CPU usage when the lag occurs. You may have some specific processes that are pegging your CPU for some reason or another.

That is VERY bad.  For a GTX 560 TI, 99C is card frying territory.

How big is your case?  You need a big one, preferably with a side-fan, to facilitate proper airflow to keep high-end GPUs cool.

Under heavy load like a 3D game, it should be at MOST reaching into the 80s, and cooler is always better.

You do realize that water boils at 100 degrees Celsius right?

Yep, if your card is reaching 99C then that is a massive problem, I use a GTX 560 and can run Skyrim on ultra and the hottest the card gets is 55C and that's on stock cooling in an Antec 300.

So what sort of case are you using, and can you make sure that your fans are running properly, if you can see the issue there then maybe look at getting some decent cooling or even a new case.

It sounded like a heating problem when i saw this last night and it seems like one. I agree with what people say about the graphics card, but i would also make sure the cooling on other parts in your system are working good also. Does your case have sufficient cooling, is there dust, etc.

On a computer I had previously, I would get stuttering problems just like you are describing.  The problem was that dust had collected in the fan for the graphics card, preventing the fan blades from turning and causing the card to overheat.  I would recommend opening the case and blowing out the dust using compressed air if you don't do it regularly.

I checked, and there doesn't seem to be any dust in the case at all, and the fans are all working properly. And it's a mid-tower case. I am not sure what kind, though. I just simply installed the graphics card... was I suppose to do something else aswell? I didn't put any other fans in it or anything.

I don't know why, but it's not heating up anymore like that. I tested Counter Strike Source maxed out at 1080p for 45 minutes, and the max temp was 64C.  I tested COD WaW maxed out for 20 minutes, and the max temp was 81C. I am still getting lagspikes, though. My dad says it's hardly noticeable, but with my OCD, I want everything to be perfect.

EDIT: I give up. It started to artifact. I don't think I want to build another computer.

Did you actually take canned air to it, or did you just look at it and say, "Nope, can't see any, so it must be good!".
I remember taking an air compressor to my folk's tower one time after they were sworn by Mr. "Pay me to fix your computer" the he/she cleaned it out, including blowing compressed air in.  Judging by the amount of hacking and coughing induced by the dust, and the lack of visibility for 10 minutes afterwards, he/she lied to them.
