So Funny junk is trying to sue Oatmeal for writing a blog post about them that 'defames' their website. When what he did was notify the admin of all the comics that were not rightfully placed on his site, then write a blog post about the whole ordeal. And now FJ is suing Oatmeal for $20,000 in damages.
Well, Oatmeal disapproves (and apparently so do many people on the internet, even FJ users) and he started out trying to raise $20,000 and was instead going to give half to the wildlife foundation and the other half to the American cancer society.
Well, people have spoken and have donated almost $100,000 to his "BearLove good, cancer bad" fund.
Anyways, I think this story is epicly hilarious and you can all read about it below :D

Yeah, the owner of funnyjunk is an idiot.
An update: Carreon (the lawyer suing Oatmeal) is now suing the 2 charities (Nat. Wildlife Federation & American Cancer Society) that TheOatmeal is raising funds for. Bigger douchebaggery cannot possibly exist.....

Holy ever-loving god it just broke 200k. Oatmeal freaking forever.

Glad to see he isn't backing down when it it obvious FunnyJunk in in the wrong for the matter. Although, not sure how people outside the internet would feel with his witty comments on the matter, doubt it would be taken so far as to have such people take it seriously though. Trying to shut down two organizations when FunnyJunk simply relies on content that is not their own is sad. FunnyJunk was semi-popular what, seven years ago, if not more? It should just die.

At this point, FJ has been removed from the equation. This is a (beyond) personal vendetta from the lawyer to personally sue Inman, IndieGoGo (the site that's hosting his fund-raiser), the National Wildlife Foundation, and the American Cancer Society. He isn't representing FJ in any of this at this point, but
was originally before Inman's lawyer replied stating that Inman can easily attain immunity from the 1st amendment, and might even qualify for a red-flag exception, thus nullifying FJ's DMCA immunity, and likely thus having repercussions of its own (site gets shut down, etc). When you think about it, who's going to win the courts favor? An original comic artist, comedian, and commentator, or a bully who makes a profit off of stolen material that he claims he's not responsible for (but he is for the money wha?), and is demanding $20k from an artist who's content he's facilitated the theft of.
Bully tactic one failed, so Carreon went back to the whiteboard, jacked up a couple syringes of ego 'roids, and is coming back with some serious, embarrassing, and frivolous rage. It'll (likely) get dismissed, but Carreon admitted in an interview that he has every intent to scour the (supposedly massive) California law with the hopes of at least pinning something on him. He won't give up until Inman burns, or the lawyer does something illegal and gets disbarred.
Judging by his write-up though, his thinking is so irrational that he can't even write up an accurate complaint without either leaving out facts from ignorance (he'd call it an oversight), or maybe even neglect. The guy is so high strung from the mom-bear illustration he isn't even able to think straight.

EDIT: I metioned this to Igu, Luci, and Haon yesterday over TS, but this is starting to become the 2011 fancy-pants law suit. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearson_v._Chung) We can only hope for a similar outcome, minus the damages to the Oatmeal of course.
Double post to link an in-depth view on what spurred Carreon's damning actions:
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/06/doubling-down-funnyjunk-lawyer-to-subpoena-ars-twitter
I love this part:
Quote"It became clear to me at one point that I could not keep up with Charles," Modelista wrote. "His comments to the press were more damaging to his reputation than any Twitter parody account could ever be. You cannot mock someone who has such a low regard for his own reputation. Before the @Charles_Carreon account was suspended, I was simply linking to his interviews. Satire was not necessary at that point as Charles was providing it."
Looks like Captain Clitsquiggle was interviewed by Ars:
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/06/the-persecution-of-charles-carreon/
Every suspicion I had about this guy's motives are correct. He is quite possibly the most unstable and least desirable lawyer I think anyone could hire. Judging by how frivulous this man is willing to get just to flex his ego, we can only hope he gets disbarred through all of this.
Oh wow. This guy needs to just shut up already... -.-
All he's doing is making himself sound more and more butt hurt.
Also this:
QuoteBefore demanding the $20,000, which was based on FunnyJunk's "estimate of advertising losses sustained due to the taint of being accused of engaging in willful copyright infringement," Carreon was told that all Oatmeal comics had been taken off the FunnyJunk site, even though they hadn't. "If I had known... no demand would have gone out," he says.
They guy is supposedly working 22 hour days, and he "works hard. really hard." and he didn't bother to check whether his client took down evidence that could be used against them?
Well he can kiss his reputation goodbye.

Yeah... 22 hours a day and he still has time to blog about photoshopped nude politicians and dog on past presidents as though we want to continue hearing excuses for why crap's effed up around our parts.
Update:
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/06/charles-carreon-just-wont-give-up
Yep, this has to be his largest career-limiting mistake. On top of it all, if it's true that he plans to fight for 50% of the donations (leaving the other 50% for the NWF and ACS), he is officially the biggest, greediest douche of a lawyer I think anyone could find. I'd be ashamed to have this man as my attorney after all this is over.

QFT. I think you summed it all up... He's a greedy douche, bye-bye lawyer career, no one will want to hire him again.
When I don't think he could possibly go any further, he makes another leap further in the douchebag direction.

Yea. Because holy jesus, look at that long list of names. And she practically wants to sue everyone who doesn't like her husband. After hearing her comments I almost feel like we're all being trolled, her cheese has slid off her cracker. x.x

That's putting it mildly... I wished I could have been in these troll wars with her, she would have sued me for every penny I could ever earn when I drop the ultimate insult on her and her husband: I hope you step on a lego.
This is just silly. Well I guess Americans' lust for sueing is too powerful once again...
And sueing charitees? Thats so unethical. The wellbeing of 1 family does not trump the lives that can be saved via donation.
So wait, HIS lawsuit started over a picture drawn of, as Inman has said, FunnyJunk's mom with a Bear, and now his wife is wildly accusing people of being Nazis, watching illegal porn, and made fun of the Buddhist religion? If the first thing was illegal, she carried insults to a whole new level and should be the one getting sued. I'm surprised what has happened is so mild compared to what it could be. Internet users could have done much worse to his email, and sent worse to his house. It just reminds me of number 4 on this list http://www.thinkdigit.com/Internet/Top-10-Trolls-in-Internet-History_3261.html He's crossing into the wrong side of the internet, and is just starting a flame war, with a bunch of trolls. The good thing is, I get to sit back and laugh as it unfolds because I know his lawsuit is going no where, and TheOatmeal's site is getting more and more traffic due to all the press. "There's no such thing as bad publicity" at least for TheOatmeal.

As long as we remember that publicity and reputation are two separate things, then yes. Plus, the internet has tendencies to jump to the little guy's defense more often than the big-bad wolf.
I'm waiting for the day when he's going to throw down an all-or-nothing last resort bullshittery attempt.
Probably something along the lines of "Attempt to shut down The Oatmeal, both charities, backtrace all the threats and hate mail/speech given about him, sue all those people too for as much money as possible, also attempt to claim 100% of all the funds generated by the fundraiser, and STILL demand $20,000 be paid to FunnyJunk, no, actually, not FunnyJunk, but to himself after all these past actions have been carried out."
As far as I'm concerned, that's what he wants to do. We all know that's EXACTLY what he wants to do at this point.
And I seriously hope he does so this becomes all the more hilarious. The dude dug himself into a hole much too deep to climb back out of, so the next best thing is keep digging until you hit the core, and go out with a bang, because nobody's going to want this dude to represent them in court when he royally !@#$s up this bad at a dispute like this.

This is funny to me; Carreon had referred to that picture as being his mother and that he did not like it. When it was never his mother, it was the admin of FJ's mother.. So I don't understand what got him raging in the first place. Oatmeal didn't really make any personal attacks on Carreon other than tearing apart his letter to shreds when he asked for the $20k and pretty much make a joke of the whole thing and then decide to give to charity.
But my god, that woman is definitely crazy and they definitely belong together. I can't believe from a lawyer's view that Charles hasn't told her wife to stfu yet.

Looks like the man who sued the Roman Empire, the Appalachian Trail, the Warsaw Pact, ?Uniform Commercial Code, unknown authors of?, www.backstreetboys.com, and former planet Pluto? in the same lawsuit is now suing Carreon:

http://pubcit.typepad.com/clpblog/2012/07/charles-carreon-digs-himself-even-deeperand-registercom-betrays-a-customer.html
And Doe #1's very personal and out of character response to Carreon:
http://charles-carreon.com/2012/07/02/a-break-from-character-part-2/
EDIT #2: Any interesting point in the following write-up. I myself have actually second-guessed posting on some of the more high-profile sites (Ars Technica, charles-carreon.com) for the exact reasons the first write-in describes. It's crossed my mind that if I post something, there's a chance I could be litigated against by Carreon, and financially/emotionally ruined through years of frivolous litigation. How pathetic is that, when you have to second guess your right to Freedom of speech when the alternative is financial ruin:

1) Invade foreign nation.
2) Meet unexpected resistance.
3) Gain new enemies, but no new territory.
4) Retreat.
5) Declare victory.

It's actually only 20k... Of his personal funds. To avoid any further litigation (Carreon accused him of wanting to withdraw the money and keep it for himself), he had IndieGoGo forward all of it on his behalf to nullify that argument, and just photographed 20k of his own personal cash. Hence Carreon's bizarre "I won" claim from last week.

I stand corrected. I counted up well over 20k, considering each stack is $2k, there's easily over 100k, but in no photo was I able to count more than ~$120k...
Oh wait, he explains:
QuoteI'm seeing a lot of the same questions, so Ill do my best to answer them here.
Coins:
As you can see, there's more than 4 cents on the floor in the giant FU picture. I mistakenly thought it was 54 cents, so the actual amount pictured is $211,233.54 instead of $211,233.04.
Transporting the money:
I had to order the money from Bank of America about a week ahead of time and then go pick it up at a local branch. I didn't want to take the photo of the money while inside the bank because they only had a tiny room and I felt a bit more secure taking it offsite to somewhere private. One of my oldest friends happens to be tall, scary, heavily bearded, and have a large selection of (licensed) firearms. I asked him to come with me and play bodyguard. We took the money to my office and shot pictures of the photos on the floor. It took about two hours and we returned it to the bank, where they machine-counted all the bills. The whole experience was basically like the movie "Bodyguard" except Whitney Houston had a beard and guns and no one got naked with Kevin Costner.
The size
$211k in cash actually wasn't that impressive to look at, even in $20 bills. I expected this huge crate of money. It was really heavy though, despite being not as gimungus as I'd imagined.
Rolling in it
I wanted to take a funny photo of me rolling in it, but the act of bathing in money sounded funny in theory but actually doing it felt really braggadocio, so I tried to just keep it classy and post photos of the money arranged in various shapes.
The drawing
I got a little frame for the drawing of FunnyJunk's mother and I'm hoping Carreon will pass it on to him.
That's it for now!
-The Oatmeal
I'm so proud of this guy. This is why you don't mess with creative genius.
