By the way, this is only Windows XP. Yep, no Vista here  ;). I'll probably make a post about how you can get Windows Sidebar onto XP later.

From your link:
QuoteA document can be opened into a window, which represents a paper copy of the document placed on the desktop.
If you have windows open, it is not a part of your desktop but instead something on the desktop.

In any case, it's semantics. The whole "dashboard" effect is pretty cool.

Fun fact, I chose this desktop for a couple of reasons. One, the Spy looks like Mr.Foster from Killing Floor...But without the white gasmask. Mainly because of the stripped tie and suit in general. Add a little dirt and a gasmask and BAM, hello Mr.Foster.

@ Phail
That's Rayu's customized boarder for MSN, mine's a fox.
So if you wanna know where to get that pic, go ask him, cuz I dunno.

@ Josh
I felt nice enough to make a short tutorial how to do it on my windows 7 Computer. The process should be relatively the same for older versions, but if you can't figure it out, I can help you with older comps too.

http://kiwi-fox3.deviantart.com/art/How-to-Customize-your-PC-157234754
Click the picture to make it bigger, and if it doesn't show up (for some reason it might) just click "download" and it will bring you to just the image.

I know windows does since XP. I don't know if they did before that. And I know in Vista they used that as a selling feature.  I also know Android by Google also has animated backgrounds called "live wallpaper". Idk about any other os's.

I mean literally I want to see what a file/program Window looks like. Most of the time my PC does not look like that and I have Windows open. And that makes up a big part of the look of an OS.
Title: Re: Your Desktop
Post by: Scotty on August 24, 2010, 07:23:07 PM
I did a bit more work and switched out the background and the theme.  Pwn gave me the idea of using this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEghhAH_Te4) for my background.  The window look and screenlets are still the same though (ain't freakin' touching all those screenlets after putting that much time into them).

And here is the result:

Yes, 10.04 LTS (Lucid).  Keep in mind the amount of modifications I've made are substantial.  If you were to install Ubuntu, the stock installation comes looking a whole lot different and basic.  That's the wonders of GNOME (and everything linux) being open source, the possibilities are endless as they've very well demonstrated!

Can't let Scotty steal the spotlight.

As a side note, at one point I had all those desklets, all that stuff, the useful information on the screen in various places, but eventually I found it rather pointless. Even if I could click on a hard drive on my desktop to navigate, I was too stuck in my old ways of clicking my "folder" icon as you will see below, which opens up my folder nav. This ideal translates to most of the desklets. Do I really need the weather on my desktop? I never check the weather normally, and I have a window beside me if I'm curious. My CPU's speed and output? Really, who cares? I know my CPU is damn powerful, and I never get it close to maxed out anyways.

lol nice try but you still handle your over all cpu speed as its main speed aka 3.2 ghz then. Just becase you have 4 tires moving at 60mph does not mean the car is going 240mph. :P Lol I'm going to get a hyperthreaded duel core P4 at 3ghz and say I have a 12ghz cpu.

Not bad at all for a q6600. I have one at default (2.4 ghz) clock speeds. I wish I could OC mine like yours. :(

I still rather have a higher end I7 if i did have a choice. I like the automatic OC for cores. That will help a lot for old games.

I'd be curious to see when if ever you actually needed that much...  Mostly because I'm not buying that your computer has not melted if you have in fact used all of that.  How much extra did that cost you?

EDIT: And nice analogy Art, couldn't have put it better myself.

This is my case http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=2699 (http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=2699)

This is my CPU fan http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=31&lng=en
(http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=31&lng=en)

Both are some of, if not the best in cooling out there. 100% on the CPU fan/heatsink.

My Case is full of fans, in a great airflow setup.

Also, the q6600 is well known for how well it Overclocks. If you look here http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2007/07/25/overclocking_intel_core_2_quad_q6600/3 (http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2007/07/25/overclocking_intel_core_2_quad_q6600/3) you will see some attempts and professional review of overclocking it. And for your information, I have the same MoBo.

So yes, I can OC to 3.2. I usually bring it down to 3.0 unless I'm doing anything seriously hardcore, but I've kept it stable at 3.2 for weeks on end at one point.

Love the backround. Have you ever read the Dexter series, Seif? I watched three seasons of Dexter, then read the first two books. If you haven't read them, they're !@#$ing amazing, way better than the series if you can believe that, and also much different.

I have the same cpu so I wanted to over clock it two. The bad thing was my Dell PC locks down that stuff. I cant just goto my bios and change stuff. But I found this pin mod that you can do that will make the q6600 jump to 3ghz. So I tried it (image of my cpu with tap over pin) (http://a.imageshack.us/img840/3023/cpuo.jpg) and well take a look for your self.

On fast PCs like mine there is really no noticeable difference in loading time regarding desktop icons. However, the average PC, and especially slow PCs, and PCs that have near-full hard drives, you'll notice a pretty significant speed increase if you clean up your desktop icons and don't have too many programs running on startup.

I ain't gonna lie, as of late, when not developing for it, I'd almost choose IE over Firefox, at least at work.  We work on terminal servers for two of our network, running Windows server 2003, and firefox can easily take a minute to start up, whereas IE starts up much faster, plus the government is hella lazy, and I've seen a lot of apps that require activex plugins and IE to function properly (Microsoft Sharepoint.... *shivers*).

Which version of IE? IE 8 is ok imo. But it does sound wired from you Scotti the Linux guy.

And Fire Fox does seem slower than most anything else. But I still use it as my main for additions and because I know how to use it. I'm also ok with Google Chrome. It really is quite fast.

Don't get me wrong, when home and on Linux, Chrome reigns supreme.  Just at work where I am restricted to Windows, I either use Chrome or IE, since Firefox is a bit cumbersome as of late...
