Title: Borderlands
Post by: Cactuscat222 on October 21, 2009, 02:56:45 PM
Borderlands is a game I recently learned about, and I got attached to it right as I read it. It already came out for the Xbox 360 and PS3, but won't be released for the PC until next week. I'm at odds on whether to get it for console or PC.

This was stolen from the Gamestop website:
Quote* FPS Action Meets RPG Character Progression: Players can choose from one of four distinct characters and earn experience and gain proficiency in a number of specialties as they do battle with enemies. Upgrades can be invested in a wide variety of special abilities, allowing players to create a fully customized character that is tailored to their playing style.
    * Co-op Engineered Game Design: Borderlands is built from the ground-up to be an exciting and intuitive co-operative multiplayer experience that rewards players for investing in specific character skill sets.
    * Radical New Art Style: Fresh and distinctive new visual style combines traditional rendering techniques with hand-drawn textures to paint a unique and eye-catching spin on the First Person genre.
    * Gun Lust: Choose from an arsenal of hundreds of thousands of weapons, each with their unique manufacturers, specifications and advantages. A revolutionary new content generation system produces almost infinite tools of destruction.
    * Intense Vehicular Combat: Get behind the wheel of and engage in intense vehicle-to-vehicle combat, complete with extensive damage modeling and spectacular explosions.
    * Next Big Original IP From Gearbox Software: Experience the action and creativity derived from the pedigree of one of gaming?s most consistent and respected developers.

I really want to get it, primarily because I love anything Co-op, especially FPS's. I've spent hours of my life playing Halo, L4D, Diablo, etc. etc. with family and friends, and this game (from the reviews I read) basically said its like Diablo in the sense of Loot, but high action FPS. The weapons, terrains, dungeons, enemies, everything is generated as you play it, so you get a different experience everytime. Only thing I don't like so far is that the most you can do with your character looks is change the colors.

Anyone else hear about it? Thoughts?

Been wanting to pre download & install it via steam, but I am poor as !@#$ right now. So that's just a distant want right now.

Now i have not played this game. I have only seen screen shots of it. Im not commenting about game play (it looks fun but idk) but there something im starting to see more and more often.

The graphics of this game, or in a matter of fact most of the game that has came out in the last 2 years look all the same with some different here and there. I don't think this is because the people who make the game are unoriginal but the hardware the game runs on seems to have a limits and features that ever one uses. And this leaks over into the pc side because most games of these kind are made for 360 and ported over to other stuff.

Or they are using a game engine that is used by other games. If thats true than my bad. >_<

Yeah, supposedly, there's like. 17 thousand weapons in the game, primarily because of the constantly changing weapon stats.

actually there are over a few million weapons in the game, its weapon system is similer to diablos ex. stinging blinding long masters sword of a thousand heroes of doom

I actually read a comment saying there was like. 17 million in the game. I just wasn't sure about it, because it seemed a little exaggerated.

I see what you're saying. The graphics looks similar to the new Prince of Persia. I think it's the sort of cell shading effect that they use. Apparently it uses the Unreal engine.

I've gotten it, and it is really quite fun. :D

I really love its look, and the way it plays - so if anyone else has gotten it for the PC/Steam, let me know, and we should hit it up, co-op style.

My friend showed me this and it looks fantastic! Definitely buying this when I have enough cash. I wish it was more massively multiplayer but it still looks great.

I recently played it at my friend's house, and the co-op is pretty fun. It reminds me a bit of WoW with the green/blue/purple items and the three talent trees. So far I've only played the hunter, and I have to say I love sending my bird out to maim skags. ;)

Yeah, bloodwing is pretty kickass. It can save you in a lot of bad situations...such as being killed by a Badass Bruiser as you send it out, only to get an almost instantaneous Second Wind as your bloodwing slaughters an unlucky Bandit.

Do you have the game for the PC?

Nope. I was watching a blind run Co-op Let's Play where the player had done that without realizing what had happened.

I got it about 3 days ago, really enjoying it so far. Ive also been dicking around with a Bloodwing glitch that lets you have like 10 of the little bastards. I got kicked from a server from doing it on an elevator and making us fall through the elevator, rendering the host's game uncompleteable* :D. That was a good day.

*You can just leave the map area, then come back and the elevator would be back down, but I dunno if they figured that out or not after I got kicked.

Haha, nice. We must play together - my steam name is 'cactuscat222', heh. I beat the game yesterday, and started up on my second playthrough. I have to say, the second play through is MUCH harder, but also seems to be much more fun, even on single player.

The ending of this game, though, pretty much sucks. But at least they already have announced a new content DLC for it.

Do you gotta pay for the DLC? My guess is since VALVe did not make the game, yeah they're gonna make us pay...

I can't really help you there, as ironic as this might sound saying not long ago Ive been enjoying Borderlands, I hate those MMORPG types. (So why do I like Borderlands? Read on.) It sucks because I always liked the style they take, building up a character standing out of the crowd. The only problem, most of them don't have much gameplay. How many MMORPGs have you played where you just click an enemy, then watch a little animation where numbers appear above the heads of your enemies? It bores me to no end and it makes me wonder how the hell WoW is so popular when it does the exact same shit as all the freeware games. I loved Fallout 3 and Borderlands simply because they were able to mix the idea of character building/rpg elements with action and a simple style (a.k.a Fallout 3's armor usually just buffs defense with little additions to stats here and there, and Borderlands gives you shields. No armor, just keeping it simple) that I can actually enjoy. To be fair there are some out there that I actually played and liked, so I'm not completely giving up on it right now. Who knows maybe I'm wrong or maybe I'm too picky. [END]Rant[/END]

I don't know much about Dragon Age, but I think it takes on that similar style, and I think it has an RTS style gameplay on the PC as well, but I'm not into that either. I don't have much info because after seeing a couple of videos of it and seeing that all you do is click an enemy and watch the fight along with troop leading, it lost my interest pretty fast. If someone has more info about it and if it's more than just "Click an enemy, watch them die" gameplay, feel free to correct me and shun me, I don't care.

If you like FPS over RPG, but still like the RPG elements, then yeah Borderlands would probably be the way to go.

is borderlands only worth buying if you can play online? because atm i have this shit internet that wont connect on my ps3 >.>

If you ask reviewers, they would tell you "Yeah, it will suck unless you can play with friends or people online". Alot of people think it sucks single player, and once you start playing Co-op, it is TONS of fun.

I have to say though, I had quite a good time playing it single player. It wasn't bad, it was still fun and high action - but it was indeed easier and the AI isn't very smart. (Though, Playthrough #2 makes it MUCH HARDER and more fun, even on single player).

Of course, co-op is more fun still. Everytime I hopped on with my brothers, it became more challenging and more fun to play - but I would still say its worth it single-player wise as well.

The Duels in game are also pretty damn fun, if not a bit unfair at times at the last second the other guy pulls a orange name color'd rocket launcher and OHKOs you. Some of the line the Hunter says when issuing a challenge is pretty damn hilarious, if not odd. He goes crazy saying "He staring at you, Bloodwing? HE LOOKIN' AT YOU BLOOD!?".

I managed to get a orange color'd smg with an insane fire rate, x4 flame damage, and if you combine the Bloodwing skill that slows your target down, then start spraying him with this thing, he dies insanely fast.

Not long ago I went up a soldier who pulled a rocket launcher on the start, and I still managed to win somehow :D.

Funny you should mention that - during my first playthrough, the most powerful launcher I found was a 550 damage one. (I also found a Helix one that shot 3 rockets in a spiral, those are the coolest). Then, right at the beginning of the second playthrough, right when the first vendors open, the item of the day was a freaking purple 1500 damage launcher.

I will be honest though, I think launchers are the most underpowered for PvE at least... they never seem to hit, and if they do, the damage never seems to splash.

what are you talking about...all i said is some fps are only worth  buying for online play, what i mean is once you finish the single player parts of them theres like nothing left to do.. like in COD it would be boring as hell to only be able to play the same campaign over and over.. don't get me wrong the single player portion of a game may be awesome, but once it's done with its good to have something else to do..
