Does anyone know what happened to Nightfall-Online?
I noticed the site doesn't exist anymore and previously before that the server for the game had also been removed from existence.
The team is slowly working on re-doing the game. The site came down after the game pretty much died down, figuring it wasn't worth the cost to keep the web server up and running.
Oh fair enough, I guess that's a good reason, I just assumed it's development was cancelled.
So did the rest of the team. Jake has re-assured us that development has in fact not stopped.
Well I'm glad to hear! Keep up the work Jake and the rest of the team :)
Thanks
And actually the game server is still up. It's just that because Jake uses No-IP he has to refresh it every once in a while or it becomes inactive.

Never played "NFO", but it sounds good. I guess I'm glad it is still being worked on so I have a chance to play. ;)
Its on and off development because Jake is lazy. Though nowhere near as lazy as me :)

Lol, I'm not sure. We have a static IP here. I think you did it in case you ever moved the server somewhere else with a dynamic IP.
No offense or anything, but I've always been curious as to why the Original NFO is still up and running. It almost seems as if nobody plays it. Wouldn't it be more simple/less of a hassle to just make it a one player game/demo, seeing as nowadays the average player online is one to almost none anyways.
Edit: Fixed a typo ;)
It is still up because it is literally no effort to keep it up. I host it on a spare server at my work. It takes up little to no bandwidth, and I pretty much do nothing to moderate it. Also, on the rare occasion that more than one person is online it makes it that much more enjoyable. Not to mention when I was doing it, it was really fun to pop on the server and have spawn parties with the people who were online at the time. As of now, you are right, really no one plays, but there can always be a resurgence of interest... who knows.
BTW, i just tried to get on, and the server was down. *cry*
Yep, as mentioned no-ip needs to be reset. Of course, I haven't logged on the server in forever so it may be on my end. I'll check it out.
Btw, Jake, where do people get the download link? Since the website is down atm, is there anywhere they can get it?

Not sure actually. I'll re-host the game, and get you an updated server in a little bit.

I thought the whole point of no-ip was so you didn't have to manually do anything...unless of course you mean because it's been unused and the account has been closed?

Yeah since I got a free version, they make me constantly check in otherwise they close it.
Jake set up the client so it no longer uses No-IP. The server should never go down now. Here's the new download link: http://www.mediafire.com/?fj5y1icoemm
Hope to see you all online!
I wanna be mod! Spawn parties sound fun... :(
Haha. Yes. They are. Although, like SO, you need access to the server in order to spawn monsters. But, don't worry. Whenever I'm on I do tons of spawning.
Server's down for updates.
Also it seems it is deciding to lock itself which causes the GM server not to work. I'll look into that, but if you ever can't get access just PM me here.
Edit: Server is online.
QuoteBut, don't worry. Whenever I'm on I do tons of spawning.
No, no. I actually want to be the one doing the spawning. That's what makes it fun for me. Spawn parties are great(I've never been to one, so I'm not speaking from experience), but I'd rather be doing the spawning myself...I have a thing for playing God.

Oh, I totally understand. I agree that it's fun... It's just not going to happen. Lol. Think of it this way, if we gave any random person spawning abilities, they could actually crash the server by spawning over 200 monsters. We tried it once when we were testing the new server. Fun times. But yea, there's also other reason why we can't give spawning abilities to just anyone. Sorry to be a downer...
True. I suppose my quest, then, is to become 'not just a random person', eh?
Eh... not really. As mentioned, even regular GMs don't get access. As far as I can see, the only people who will ever have the ability to spawn is Jake and myself. Unless Jake programs something that will allow a client, or a "super" client to be able to spawn monsters. I wouldn't give anyone else remote access to the server computer.
Edit: Btw, I'm on the server now if anyone's interested in playing. I can spawn monsters at intervals as I am at work and may need to minimize to do other tasks.
I'll hop on in a few minutes.
I'm online now but I'm running at 11 fps D:

Yup. He's making a singleplayer game within the world of NFO while I make the online version. It's perfectly fine.

If he create gfx, and jake programmed the game, that doesn't make him sole developer of the game. So shut yer hole...
@Jake:
He doesn't explain this in the topic, so I couldn't know. My bad.
QuoteBasically, this game was based off JaketheSnake3636's Nightfall Online which I worked (with a team of bright, matured individuals) as the graphic artist, and that's when I thought I could also create an offline version and at the same time allowing both games to enjoy newly created sprite resources as I make them, not to mention the motivation and enjoyment being both programmer and artist

Ok, let me explain,
NFO team knows that I was to make a single player version called "Nightfall Offline" even before because I want to enjoy developing games, to program... so instead of starting a new project, I told them that I was going to make an offline version so that all sprites that I can make can be used by the NFO game at the same time ideas in my game could be ported to NFO's. I just renamed it to "Eventide" because I didn't want words like "On" or "Off" + "line" on the title anymore, I feel it has been used so many times, and because "Eventide" is somehow related to "Nightfall" so that gives a sense of link to each other. I felt bad of this comment, back in the days when the NFO forums exists, I am usually someone who is constantly creating ideas. Lingus and I creates, (even find ourselves arguing and reasoning) such lengthy topics that were full of thoughts (topics that I long to read again, sadly they're no longer available), and Jake gets there to discuss whatever Lingus and I come up with.
I don't like that accusation... do you really think that I would rip off Jake? I don't enjoy taking advantage of someone's work. I admit though that I had few snippets of codes from Jake before but that's because I asked him for it.
I guess I made myself clear now.

I think he meant more along the lines of "how do both worlds correlate in terms of story and whatnot".
I think at this point the stories aren't really entirely developed for either. We have a kind of outline for what's going on in Nightfall, but I'm not sure if Teej did anything for Eventide. Certainly they will be related to that same basic outline, but I think the story that you follow in Eventide will be somehow different. Teej and I discussed it briefly, but I'm not sure which direction he will take it.
Btw, welcome back Teej! Haven't heard from you in a long while. Good to hear from you again. How are things going and such? As for your comment about wanted to read all those discussions we had on the old forums, I saved all of them down as word documents. I can send them over to you if you like. I'll be able to do that next week when I'm back home.
So Eventide is now in the publics. That's cool. I think people should see what Teej has been working on. I really love a lot of the game mechanics he implemented. I'm in love with the ranged attack. Being as that has been my choice of weapon since around the start of even talking about redeveloping the game, I'm excited by the results. I just can't wait for all of the Heroes of Nightfall to be running around on their flying mounts and wearing their animal armor. That'll be really cool.
Interestingly enough, me and Jake have been having that exact same discussion, heh.
I'm doing good Lingus, I just became inactive I had a full time job, but my contract (they wanted to move, I don't) there ended so I'm here. Anyways, Don't mind recompiling all those notes, that would take you lots of time, besides I got access on the old topics again. Yesterday, we had a discussion regarding Nightfall and Eventide, only you were the one absent.
Haha, yes, I found out about that thanks. And yes, I am absent quite often. I'm pretty busy myself. I really only have an hour or so a day to go on forums and check posts and respond. Can't do much of any instant messaging...

Yea I fixed it. All I have to do is VNC in and log into Windows and then everything works. Very annoying. I have to talk with my brother (our IT guy) as to why it is doing this.
Edit: Found a Logmein setting that causes this. Now can someone explain why the GM client can't connect to the server when the server computer is locked? Logically, the computer being locked should not cause this. All of the programs are still running in windows so it doesn't make sense. You should be able to lock the computer and still have the GM server connect. In any case, this should no longer happen.
Btw, what happened to the forums? Are they down til the new version is released?
Yes. I believe they will be down until then. I'm not sure what Jake's plans are on that.
Just wanted to let everyone know I reset the Rankings table. Go log in and get your name up on the list! If you log in right now you are gauranteed to have your name on the list no matter what your level. At least for a short time. You'll have to level up if you don't want to be knocked off!
Keep in mind, I believe you have to log out for your name to be saved on the list so if you don't see it right when you log in that's why.
I'm second :D
Is it just me or is this an old version of the game?
Well it's not the newest version..... obviously.
No. This is the most recent public release of the online version of the game.
There is an offline version that Teej, our graphic artist, is working on. And obviously Jake is busy working on the new version. But no one should really have seen any of that other than screenshots here and there.
I thought the shops use to sell things? and you could fish? and there were mounts? and all this other stuff.

As far as NFO, it doesn't surprise me if there isn't much activity in the game anymore. The team has recently gotten back together after a hiatus, and we are working together to formulate new plans and such. Jake has re-assured me that there is quite a bit done with it though. Unfortunately though, development is crawling (from my understanding) due to more important matters (school, family, friends, etc...).
It's not crawling, but goes off and on. I'll get a ton done one week and then ignore it the next week.
I want badly to get people on and play.
I will sometimes log in when I'm at work for a bit. Depends on what time of day you're talking about. I'm pacific time and it'll be any time around 12 noon to 5pm maybe. It all depends on what I'm doing. But yea, if I'm on and I see people playing I ussually log into the server and spawn monsters, so that's always fun.

To further clarify, fishing itself works, but you can't gain levels in fishing. That's the part that is not working at the moment. And the fish themselves aren't actually pointless as you gain money for each fish you catch. The money you gain though is what is pointless as there is nothing to purchase at the moment.

Well as many of you know, I began recoding Nightfall Online about a year and a half ago... Progress was coming along great, until I had an even better idea. Using all the knowledge and programming skills I had obtained from working on the recode, I decided to start doing a recode of the recode! Yes, you guys heard me correctly. Jake, you might as well stop recoding, and just code a brand new game engine that will be the base for your new NFO, then start programming in this brand new engine!
Oh wait, better yet, code a brand new Operating System, that you can then build a brand new Game Engine for, and then build a brand new NFO for!
And if Direct X or any other graphics systems don't suit you... :P
I was actually kidding about recoding the recode. Most of my time on NFO has actually been making the new engine for the game.

So is NFO currenlty MIA? Downloaded the game from someones sig and it can't connect to the server. I remember when it was first released way back in the day and it was just that one screen with a boat and every nuking each other with the meteor spell.
Was great fun. So, what happened to NFO now that it's towards the end of the year?

I will confirm that the server is currently disconnected. There wasn't enough interest, and we moved offices, so we never hooked it back up. Still have it, so i could plug it in and fire it up (potentially... the new setup might not allow for it, but still), but there would have to be enough interest and I'm not sure there is...

I will confirm that the server is currently disconnected. There wasn't enough interest, and we moved offices, so we never hooked it back up. I for one, would play it.
I would definitely play also.
I'd play. I'm actually downloading it right now. 8)
I'd play. I never got to play a lot when it was originally out.
Same. Saw a couple videos of it. Looks interesting.
I'd play it. Heck i even tried to play it a few times recently, I figured The server was just taken down till the next NFO or something, But if it's able to go back up that'd be awesome.
I'd play it I used to play that game all the time it was a blast!
Well, Lingus? Have we enough interest yet? :)
Well since everyone else is doin it.."I'd play it"

Possibly. I just want to make sure I don't go through the trouble of setting everything up just to have 1 or 2 people signed in at odd hours. Not to mention I personally don't have much time anymore to log in and spawn stuff very often.

I second this notion!

Make a couple of other people mods??? Anyway, we don't really need spawn parties and stuff all the time anyway.
Also if there is no way to implement it into the game and you felt the need to spawn the array of extra monsters...I this possible solution?
You could stay constantly logged into your mod account and than create a macro which continually spawns spawn-only monsters over a period of time. Granted I don't know exactly what you do to spawn monsters, weather it be commands or a GUI for it. But macros in general aren't that hard to program so that could be a solution if your willing to apply a bit of improvisation?
Honestly though, that really isn't a big deal. I just loved that damn game and want to play it. Hell, if hosting a server is too hard, maybe somebody else could host it for you?
i volunteer to be a mod
To be honest, this is really dependent on Jake. If he doesn't want me to put the server up I'm not going to. If he's okay with it I will consider it.
Making someone a mod won't help. In order to spawn, you have to have a remote connection to the server. The only person who I will allow a connection is Jake at this point, and I'm sure he would agree to that.
Pwnage, not a bad idea, but... if not enough people are logged in and killing monsters there could be an overflow of monsters which will cause the server to crash. The normal spawn does not allow that to happen because I assume once a certain number of monsters spawn it stops spawning until they are killed. Using the manual spawn on the server, you can spawn as many as you want. Around 200+ or there abouts, the server starts to slow up and I imagine will crash at some point.
I mean, essentially, if people really want the server up we can do it probably, but you would just have to be comfortable with not having someone on to spawn monsters very often at all (unless Jake plans on being more active than I am.) Which, to be honest, I can defintely see everyone who really wants to play right now being bored with it in a month or so.

Why don't have monsters already spawned and when they die new monsters spawn..?
That is already the case. But just like when Meiun has spawn partys, people liked doing the same thing in NFO.
