My dreams are becoming a reality! Oh dear God, yes yes yes.
This is, without a doubt, the single greatest moment ever.
Looks like the jetpack finally came to reality. Seems kind of dangerous, though. Let's keep em away from kids.

4. Press play on both.
5.????????
6. Profit.

Life is dangerous. Get used to it. ;)
I just noticed something. What happens if the jetpack runs out of gas while you are high in the air? "It's a bird! It's a plane! No it's a guy with a jetpack plummeting to the ground!"

What happens when a car runs out of gas in the middle of the freeway?
It's called not being an idiot...

well technically its not a rocket not is it. But an air plain helicopter.

You die...
This is going to be bad. You know why the rate of death is so much higher in cars than it is in planes? Because only pilots fly planes. Any stupid person can get a license to drive a car.
You know why the rate of death in cars isn't higher? Because they aren't planes. If some stupid person runs out of gas or does something stupid (which will happen, and happen often) it would normally be minor injuries for the driver and possibly other people... but now any and all minor stupidity will result in death. You don't just crash and come to a stop. You !@#$ up thousands of feet in the air and you will die.
And anyways, I can't see this being a regular thing. People taking off from their back yards, zipping around the city along with millions of other people. The sky looking like one giant freeway. People criss-crossing at complete random, no lanes, no idea of even a general direction of traffic flow. It would be utter chaos and destruction. There is no way the FCC would allow this. It will probably be restricted to outside of city limits for normal people, and inside would be reserved for emergency personnel.

"The Martin jetpack was designed to meet the Federal Aviation Administration's Part 103 regulations, which govern "ultralight" vehicles that don't require a pilot's license (though the company does require you to enroll in its training class prior to flying).
The FAA dictates that you won't be able to fly at night -- jetpacks are allowed only from dawn to dusk. But that's OK: The Martin jetpack doesn't have any operating lights.
The FAA also wags its finger at flying in town, warning that "no person may operate an ultralight vehicle over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons." And a slew of complicated regulations dictate how high you can fly, based on the visibility of clouds."
From teh article. The thing you gotta realize is, every vehicle, no matter what you do, has the potential for death. It's impossible to prevent stupid people from being stupid. If we regulated the hell out of everything in the name of safety, you may as well not even get up in the morning.

I'm still skeptical. It's likely they have some big time big wig buyers lined up. Doesn't mean it will be anywhere even remotely mainstream anytime soon.

Not with a $100,000 price tag, they won't. :-\
Yea. Still though even if it were as affordable as a car it would be restricted to the point that it would not make any sense to have one. You would still have to have a car to drive around the city, and the fact that it only has a range of 31 miles just doesn't make it usefull for anything other than having fun. I see this as an equivalent to ATVs, dirt bikes, and wave runners. Except way too expensive to get one just for recreational use.
Now, if they had automatic guided navigation... That would be it. Of course, they'd need to figure that out for cars first before they add a z axis. Honestly I think the next greatest thing for transportation will be automatically driven cars. All the appeal of public transportation with none of the downsides. It would be the greatest advancement to civilization yet. But, that's off-topic.

I'd disagree. 31 miles is just under 50km and you will be able to travel in staight lines. If had access to a jetpack, I would be able to to do the daily fly to school everyday, eachway. As the distance I have to travel is just under 20km, eachway.
The real issue is how long it would last, using figures, I can determine that the jetpack would travel (at a constant velocity) for 1771secs or 29.53mins. Imagine having to refill every 25 or so minutes! It would be more cost effective to have a car.

I think you're undershooting the fact that it gives you the availability to fly. It's everyone's childhood dream come to life. It simply cannot compare to ATV's and dirtbikes. It's much much more than that.
Now they just need to develop something that allows us to travel underwater... screw flying, its all about going under 5ft in the ocean. Where are those vehicles?!
first thing, i noticed the price tag was ludicrous. not every idiot is gonna be able to get one, also the fact that not that many are gonna be made each year. Second thing. rich people who do buy this aren't gonna wanna be prone to do stupid stuff such as flying with a low tank of gas... third thing. i don't see an average person getting one and being able to just fly around. Unless this said person decides he has an extra 100k laying around which he/she didn't spend on another car or better home.

A
yellow submarine.
I can't wait to start seeing these things. Not just seeing the thing in action, but because so many things can go wrong.
Grand Theft Jetpack, midair fly-bys (it will happen), some tard decides to try to light a cigarette in the middle of the flight, ect.
I'm only joking really, but it really wouldn't surprise me if these things got banned in states in the next couple of years.
OH MY GOD. This is amazing! Its actually a lot bigger than I would have expected but still awesome as ever. This is probably the most epic/great thing I will ever see in my life. It's gonna be pretty cool to see those flying around all the time in a matter of years. Ofcourse, if they retail this as a vehicle and not a luxury item, there will have to be all new flying tests, Licenses, and laws. This is truly amazing.

I'm guessing that's referring to how they have cameras set up everywhere to watch people on the obstacle course.

But you can't travel in the city... Unless you live in a rural area you couldn't use it. And even then, you would have to land before getting into a congested area and take public transportation from there. So it's not practical in that sense.

My point wasn't really how fun it would be. I completely agree with you. I would take one of these over an ATV or dirtbike for sure. My point was that it is not practical to use as a transportation vehicle. It would only make sense as a recreation vehicle such as ATVs or wave runners. I guess all I'm saying is I predict that that will be the extent of its function unless some other device or system is implemented (such as automatic guided navigation which takes human error out of the picture).

Currently, I would agree with you. Between gas prices, dangers of flying, the price of the machine, it's huge size, and relatively short flight time, it's just not a good idea for travel. On the other hand, if they can make these machines safer, find a better fuel source, and lower they're price, I don't see why they wouldn't become a great way to travel in the future. Of course, this is all speculation on my part, but hey, it could happen.
Frankly, I see this as the motorcycle of airplanes. Motorcycles aren't particularly safe, but people are still allowed to travel on one. It's not unreasonable to assume that, now that we HAVE the technology, that we don't make regulations to cover its usage.

The thing is, I foresee it taking a longgg time before this really has a chance to be good for travel. It looks really fun, though. Too expensive right now, but that should go down in several years. ...I hope.
