Ahhh yeah a freeware 2D platformer made and released in 2004 in japan in which it then got translated to good ol' engrish. I'm trying not to make this post as a huge wall of text that puts Godzilla to shame, but long story short: 2D platformer, shoot things, creative number of weapons that can be leveled up, good story, sweet music, ect ect.

The game kinda starts out slow, and takes a while to get used to. But once it's off the ground, you're in for a treat. Try it out if you have a couple of HOURS to kill...As in like 2 days. Yeah this game has I think... 4 endings? Very bad, Bad, Normal, Good? Hell I dunno. Oh and not to spoil anything, but if you're going for the Good ending, I recommend looking up a walkthrough, simply because some of the choices in this game that change the story's end from good to bad or vice versa are so secretive, you'd hardly believe it. Pick up one item that seems harmless to get too early or too late in the game and BAM, you're forced to get the Bad or Normal ending. But I personally recommend you go through the game without a walkthrough before attempting the Good ending. Oh and if you get to the last cave in the Good ending, I wish you good luck. It kicked my arse. There's a reason why there's a sign outside of it that says "Welcome to Hell"

Overall for a platformer, specially for a freeware game, this is quite the fun shooter. Hell game sites even said it rivals other games like Metroid, Castlevania, and Megaman. It's also debated to be the most well known Indie game of all time, so it really wouldn't surprise me if you guy have heard of this game before. Hell it even made it to WiiWare recently. Actually the Wii version is more polished, but to be honest, the character you play as kinda scares me in the Wii version. Just looks...Creepy. Also events in the Wii version are changed around a bit, how much- I'm not sure. I might buy it on WiiWare later on to check it out though. But in the mean time, check out the original.

I recommend the Deluxe Package by Wadeizzle. It gives you a fully translated Cave Story game, the soundtrack, concept art, ect. Take up a bit more space but it's easier. Have fun. If you've played before share your thoughts so that others might be encouraged to play it.

Sounds like a Visual novel.

Yeah, if you read absolutely NONE of Darkblade's post, maybe...  <_<

Incidentally, Darkblade, there's only a Good, Normal, and Bad ending.  Well, unless you consider the "very bad" ending to be the game over screen when you die.

Also, I felt I should clarify that the game has had an official release as a download on WiiWare, with updated graphics and music (with the option to switch either to the old ones), difficulty settings, and a few new game modes, such as Boss Rush mode.  It's 1200 WiiPoints ($12), but the game is easily worth it, and the creator (the original being made entirely by ONE GUY, independent gaming company Nicalis worked with him for WiiWare release) definitely deserves the money for his creation.  :)

I've played through the game myself over half a dozen times, now.  :p

Visual novels MOST of the time have several paths to follow good /bad. -__-

Played this a while ago. I've gotten the good ending...

Okay, that's not quite accurate. I never actually beat the bonus area but...

And that is where any similarity between Cave Story and a Visual Novel end... even several movies have multiple endings, same with books, etc. etc. Cave Story is a platformer.

IT still reminds me of one :(.

This game is really amazing. That's all I have to say, really. Everything is just about perfect. Also, a particularly good musical score - you won't get the main theme out of your head for days, trust me.

Download it. Now.
Whee!

Yeah. Xgamer saying this is like a visual novel is like saying Megaman is. A visual novel is something like Phoenix Wright in my opinion. A platformer is just about the exact opposite. Just because a game has more than a single ending doesn't mean it's a visual novel. Any game could do it. What if a game had absolutely no story, was an FPS, but allowed you to get 2 endings? Would that be a visual novel?

I think xgamer is trying to say that it has the same concept of a visual novel. But, it's more like a choose-your-own-story type of thing (if that's what they are called, anyways).

Uh, except it's a 2d platformer and absolutely nothing like a 'choose-your-own-story' type of thing.  The ONLY thing even remotely in common is that they have different endings.  That's not exclusive to visual novels, or any other genre.  Hell, the RPG Chrono Trigger for the SNES (one of the best games in existence, incidentally) had TWELVE different endings.

I know what he's saying, but it's just way off mark.

Nevermind, I read it wrong.

Typically with a "Choose-your-own-story" (are they called visual novels? I've never heard that) you follow completely different paths through the story. It's not simply a different ending. I believe in cave story the main plot that you follow is the same up until the ending. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope you are correct.
