Buy a better computer, and then give the rest to my parents for use.

Probably would go towards renting a new house or something.

I would go out and purchase a hooker, bring her back to my place, have her strip down naked, then I'd proceed to have her order a pizza while she's on all fours, and I'm drawing a large remote control on her back with a Sharpie marker.  Once the pizza arrives, I'll thrown on an episode of Mythbusters, and every time it came to a commercial, my faithful human remote would be alongside the couch waiting for me to dial the new channel on her back, and press "go" and she'd go up and change the channel for me, then return to my side as I eat my pizza.  When I run out of beer, I'd just press the "beer" button and "go" and I'd have a new beer in my hand!

Either that or hire the same hooker to read from the book of Psalms in the bible while I sit on the other side of the couch jerking off.

Not sure which though...

I'd help the folks finish up the house and car payments. I would also probably get a nice computer. Then I would put some away for a college fund and store the rest safely under my mattress.

Whats reasonable? The lotto around me is between 20, and 26 million..

So.. I'll just go with 20 mill..

I'd pay all of my families debts, my immediate family(Mom, dad, brother), help out my moms mom, since my other grandparents aren't that cool to me..

I'd buy a nice.. but realistic car... something like.. an Audi Rs4 not going to go blow a mill on something stupid..

Buy a bunch of little things to establish a good credit so I can be approved for a house loan.. and since my father is a mortgage banker, he can get me a good loan.. and I would purchase a house.. with a lower interest rate then the rate i get on the investments i make with about 15mill. therefore, I'm producing more money while paying bills.

From there.. I'd pretty much tell me good friends to put their jobs down to part time. and I'd just take care of them while we chilled. (not paying for their bills, just pay for things when we hang out)

Mind you.. this is missing all the details and such.. like how much i'd lose from tax's and rates i get for the loan and investments. But it still is a general idea.

Bank it and live off the interest for the rest of my life.  I'm not sure what's a fairly average interest rate, but for, say, .4% interest yearly on the 20mil NSC brought up, that's $80,000 in interest per year.  Pretty damn good salary for someone who would never have to work a day in their life.

i would do something like this, but have it in a cd, i wouldn't be able to touch it for like 6 months, so i would work, but i would probably be giddy with excitment about being able to retire at whatever age i had won the lottery and live nicely with what i want.

Honestly, I think winning a large sum of money like that could ruin you if you're not wise about it.

Yeah, or that.  I'm not entirely clear on all my available options as far as banks go, but I'd look into it once I actually have the money to care.

@Jake:  No joke.  Haven't you heard the stories of a lot of the people who go winning the lottery who never really ever had lots of money before?  They go spending it like crazy and end up ruining themselves.  I'd put it into the bank (or other some such account) for a year, and let it accumulate interest for a year, while I continue to live my life as normal.  After that year, I'd use the accumulated interest as my checking account, so to speak, and leave the original sum of money alone.  I'd keep in mind my weekly budget with that salary (with 80k per year, that's approximately $1500 per week, which is nothing to scoff at) and I'd live like it.  I would be able to live my entire life without ever having to slaving myself off to someone else.

I can think of no better thing to purchase than my freedom.

Invest in real estate. Especially right now. Anyone who has any amount of money stands to make loads of money on it.

Though of course, I wouldn't spend it all on that. To be honest, I would probably buy a nice place in a remote area near the ocean or in the mountains. I'd invest a good portion of it, much like Chaos said. Put it somewhere smart (whether real estate or a CD or something) so that it makes money on its own. Then I would just relax, start a family, write, read, go on vacations. Meanwhile I wouldn't try to rely on the money on its own. I would still want to do something that I can make a living at.

The main thing to think about is that as soon as you have this amount of money, everyone you know, and everyone you have known will want to get to know you better. You'll have tons of new "friends" all wanting to take advantage of you. Family will come out of the woodworks. Even family you are close with will probably want you to repay "debts" that you "owe" them. It's all really tricky.

If you do things like NotSoCheerios is talking about you'll be out of money in around a year, and you'll probably have no friends, and after the high of having all that money and spending it and then having to go back to a "normal" life you'll probably be depressed and worse off than you were before. If you're going to spend it like that, you might as well just give it to charity and save yourself the trouble.

Yeah, the beauty of my method (and me in general) is that I am: A.) a loner, B.) very skeptical towards people, C.) I am a master in counter-manipulation, and D.) have a perfectly good excuse for why I can't give them any money, if I decide to not go with the "Piss off." method.

Care to explain HOW I'd be out of money in a year?
I'm pretty sure I said I'd buy a house..and you just said.. invest in real estate.. All I'd be doing is investing it besides paying off my families SMALL amount of debts.
Title: Re: If you won the lottery...
Post by: Lingus on June 07, 2010, 03:05:16 PM
You didn't say you would buy a house, you said you would get a loan. Now you're paying interest. But that's only part of the reason.

If you're paying off debt, as well as buying your friends and family things and paying for them to hang out with you... that really snowballs. They'll start expecting it more and more, and they'll take more and more advantage of you. Given, maybe your friends and family all have really strong will and are very very nice people and think very highly of you. In that case, maybe they won't take advantage of you. But that kind of money would affect a good percentage of the population, so it's likely that at least someone in your circle will get that way. And maybe you'll just tell them off, but do you really want to have to do that?

I'm just saying that with that kind of money, and that kind of attitude about spending it, it will make for some very awkward, and possibly even very damaging situations.

But in reality, the opposite attitude of not offering to spend money on anyone is also potentially dangerous. No matter what you do, if people know you have that kind of money someone is going to be expecting something. If I had the ability, I would figure out some way of making sure no one else knew that I won the lottery. If I decided to start spending it on people, I'd figure out some way of making it plausible that I had that kind of money, and I'd do it bit by bit. Kind of like if you were to rob a bank. You wouldn't want to quit your job and start spending way more than you would have normally. Act like nothing happened, and give people little "gifts" here and there.

But.. I said with the loan. I'd also be investing to make sure I was making more then the interest of the loan was charging.. and that would only be for like 1-2 years so that I could build up my credit. which afterwards i would pay off in full.. Also.. I'd only be buying a house between 500-600k, nothing insane. Interest wouldn't really scratch it. as for the loan, as I said, my father is a mortgage banker, thus able to get me a good rate on a loan.
Who says my family would take advantage of me? and helping my family.. would only be like 6k to pay off my brother's car. and the remaining 70k on my mothers house. and like 10k to finish remodeling my grandmothers house. so.. that would be less then 1/25th of my money.. where all but a little of the rest would be put into high end CDs building interest over the following years.

As for taking care of my friends while we chill.. i'm talking little things like the movies or something.. I wouldn't be buying them cars and taking them on vacations.

You can do things for other people as long as you have a plain and self control. Make sure you know what you can spend and still be happy with what you have left. Then divide a piece off what you can spend and use that to give out. If they keep asking for more simple tell them no. And if you still don't know what I'm saying its have an idea of what you will do and stick with it.

I get what you're saying, and the real estate loan thing isn't a necessarily a bad idea. In fact, I wouldn't be certain what I would do in that respect until I get there. I would certainly consult an expert before making any major purchases.

My point wasn't that your friends and family would take advantage. My point is that it snow balls. It might be fine at first, but then some people might start asking for more and more, and eventually you would have to tell them "no" and their reaction is probably going to be something along the lines of "but you have so much, why are you being greedy?" But I'm not saying that would definitely happen to you necessarily. It's just be something you would have to watch out for. And being so open about it like you are saying opens it up for more potential of that happening.

Okay.. I gotcha. It's mainly depends on if i have the will power to deny my friends. I actually had a dream last night that i won the lotto. and how great it would be not having to worry about making my car payment on time anymore. or having to wake up at 5am to get read for work.

I like how everybody assumed the lottery was for money. I read a book somewhere that was about a town who had held a lottery every year, except it was a lottery for death. The town had to sacrifice one person per year, but I dont quite remember the whole details of the story but it was something along those lines.

I like how everybody assumed the lottery was for money. I read a book somewhere that was about a town who had held a lottery every year, except it was a lottery for death. The town had to sacrifice one person per year, but I dont quite remember the whole details of the story but it was something along those lines.

Well.. he said "the" lottery, not "a" lottery. Which, nationwide, means the money version of the lottery.... Also, that's fictional and only dumb people would live in that town :P

While the story may have been fictional, there were/are places where people are randomly selected to be sacrificed... mostly for religious purposes.

First off, it would be kept completely secret.  No one would no other than me, ever.

Next, I divide it into two halves:  Within my lifetime, and after my lifetime.  For now, the after my lifetime half will be put in a high paying, long term interest account.

With the half I am to use in my lifetime, I would first off set aside all money I will need for university, pay off debts, etc.
Then, I would give some to my parents anonymously, telling them years later it was me.
Next, I would put the rest to be used within my life in a bank account, gaining interest on it.  I'd invest in the stock market, as by this point I have graduated from Queens with a degree in Commerce, and I play the stock market, but also invest in small business's.  In particular, I set up loans for my friends who have always wanted to start a business, figuring out a way to avoid telling them that I won the lottery.  Meanwhile, I have doubled the initial money I set aside from myself, less a few luxuries, like a nice house, cottage, car, etc.  I'll have set up a company, a parent company to the various small business I initially lent to.  I continue on investing, building my network.  However, throughout my life, I never live too richly.  I live well off, but not the life of a rich person.  By now I will have a larger fortune that the initial winning.  I'll use this to donate to the alzheimer and cancer societies, as well as funding a geo-engineering project to solve global warming.  I will now divide my current wealth in half, retire at 57, and use one half to live like a king for my golden years.  I'll put the other half into a fund for my descendants, who every 25 years, will get the accumulated interest.

Now, back to the "After my lifetime half" from the beginning.  This has been accumulating in value, and I will use it to set up a charity that every 5 years, will give full scholarships to ten promising students, who will be determined solely on merit, not on need.

well if it is 20 mill, i would pay off some of my dads debts, buy me a small house for 15k, buy a better car for 10k, open up my own game studio and start having the people that work for me make the games i want, and port them to most modern systems.

also i know that most modern games cost like 10-20 mill,360 ps3, to make but that is only if you choose to put that money into flashy graphics.

I would spend it to make a time machine or a way to go invisible but not allow the public to use it.

Pretty sure both those things would cost more than 20 mill

Holy Crap! Where do you live!? I didn't know real estate was that bad anywhere in the US. I know Arizona is down to like 30k in some places, but if you had 20mill, why would you buy the worst possible house in the worst possible market? I mean, even 100k could get you a really really nice house in some places, but you could drop 1-2mill and have an amazing place in a really desirable location.
