DC Universe Online Release

So the MMO DC Universe Online (based on DC super hero comic books) was just released yesterday, and is one of the only high budget MMORPG's that has actually made a good attempt at utilizing an action based/twitch combat system as oppose to auto attack and all that nonsense. For this reason I decided to give it a shot, and so far, I have actually been having a pretty awesome time (somewhat to my surprise). The combat is significantly more enjoyable than most other MMO's I've played, and the actual gameplay/world is FILLED with significantly more interesting quests, events, and other happenings. I played for a good few hours today, and have yet to have a single moment of what I would consider to be grinding or mindless questing. Every situation is filled with unique objectives, interesting scenarios, encounters with famous DC comic book hero's or villains that often team up with you, and tons more. Pretty much every NPC you talk to has voice acting as oppose to just text for you to read, and for the most part the voice acting is all done really well. The game also has pretty sweet hero vs villain PVP, especially if you pick to play on a PVP server (which are pretty hardcore).
Ontop of all that, the game has great physics, allowing you to smash, pick up/throw, and interact with all sorts of objects in the environment, which the game actually makes good use of on a number of occasions. Boss fights are also pretty awesome so far. My characters mentor is Batman, so at the end of the first mission chain I decided to embark on I had to fight the villain "Scarecrow." The fight was super epic. Due to the fact that prior to facing him you are continually getting exposed to his "fear gas," most of the battle he launches a number of different fear-gas hallucinations upon you. Some examples of these were summoning lightning strikes throughout the room that you have to dodge while fighting him, summoning a horde of alligator monsters that you have to kill a special way, turning into a swarm of bats, growing to be humongous, making you think that a bunch of ally super hero's are attacking you, etc. This was also all done with the assistance of Bat Girl, who you have to save from him.
The only thing I don't really like so far (from what I have seen, which admittedly isn't all that much) is that the game doesn't seem to have quite as as many options for powers and customization as some of the other hero based MMO's out there. Although, one thing that is good in terms of character customization is the game actually does use weapons and equipment, where most of the other super hero games don't.

So, aside from being a bit nerdy, it seems like a pretty good game so far. If anyone else out there happens to have the game (for PC), let me know and we can maybe play together sometime. I don't normally play a lot of pay to play MMO's, but I figure this one was at least worth a shot.

Mr Pwnage

I saw you playing that on steam yesterday when I first logged on...I than logged on like 10 hours later and saw you were still on. I basically just made the assumption you were addicted.

Ha, I didn't play it THAT much. I mainly just played a few hours at first, then logged in again later that night for a little before I went to bed.

Edit: Oh, and Havok, yes it is on steam (that's how I got it). It costs 14.99 a month with the first month free.

I've played City of Heroes (and all expansions) and Champions Online.  Because of those two facts I told myself I'd never play another hero type mmorpg unless it was free to play because I always get suckered into buying them and finding out how much of a piece of garbage they really are after I've already spent $60 on the game and $45 and then realize when I'm going to pay for my 5 month how crappy the game turns out to be towards the end and quit.

But by that time I've already spent $105 on something that I could have saved for something else I'd really like.  Like maybe a Soda Maker or something else reusable for years like a DeLonghi Stainless Steel Dual Zone Digital Deep Fryer.

I had tried both City of Heroes and Champions Online too. City of Heroes was fun to start, but got repetitive and boring pretty quickly. Champions was just straight up too linear for me to even get interested in. DC Universe so far is better than both of those (in my opinion) BY FAR. Definitely doesn't get very repetitive or stale, far superior gameplay, and I HEAR that there is good end game (although I couldn't currently tell you from experience yet).

But hey, those soda maker contraptions do look pretty awesome as well, So I can't blame you with that decision!

Hmmm, I want to try it, but i just got over my wow addiction -_-'. I might give it a shot in a couple of months hopefully it does well I'd love to see blizzards community grow smaller.

Is there any group based quests or boss's if so do characters have a role they play for example, DPS / Heals / Tank?

Also is there any player vs player battlegrounds and can you get a pvp rating/rank?

yeah its awesome so far ive made a villain who uses gadgets and dual pistols, hes level 6. I put him in a pvp world though so sometimes while im questing i get dominated by high level heros

Gin

Heroe's? pff who needs them, the screams of my victims is enough to fuel me. So im guessing you get to be based of a villan can you be the swamp spiderman dude? if so im so trying this game out.

Yes, yes, and yes. You can group for any missions, which oten helps a lot. As I said in my first post, the boss fights are extremely awesome, and way more eventful/unique than anything you'd find in WoW. As for the roles, they definitely have them. You can actually set a seperate set of hotkeys depending which role you are currently trying to fill in for (everybody can do the damage role, but what the other role you can play ends up being is based on what power sets you choose).
As for the PvP battlegrounds, they don't do that exactly the same way as WoW, but they do have a variety of different instanced PvP options. I havn't really tried them out yet though so I couldn't tell you much on the details. I already play on a PvP server though so I am constantly just fighting random villain players in the streets. I would have made a villain, but too many people already do that in my opinion, and I don't like going with the crowd all the time.

i thought everyone would want to be the good guy when i went villain, i guess i was wrong.

Are you kidding? 9/10 kids these days would rather be the villan rest assured.

Scotty

What server is everyone playing on?

Meiun

My brother and I both have hero characters on the Death & Glory server (it's a PvP one). Dunno about everyone else though.
