Sorry guys because if you agree with me you?ll no doubt be wrong, but the answer is 2. If you see it as 48/2*(9+3) then you have changed the sequence of operation. Innermost symbol of inclusion but be finished before proceeding from left to right. 2(12) must be completed in its entirity before the division. You can not add implied symbols of inclusion any more than you can change the operational symbols.

It's all explained here:

You only have to do that if its a variable.  if you have the answers then it remains how it is and you wouldn't get two even if you did what you are saying since as I said earlier you'd end up with an answer in the decimals.  When you distribute you do not keep the parenthesis.  For example

5x(x+3)+3 does not equal (5x^2+15x)+3 it equals 5x^2+15x+3

I retract my older post. The old abbreviation I learned in school was "P.E.M.D.A.S/Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally", meaning parentheses, exponent, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction for the order of operations. This would indeed be the (9+3), equaling 12. The multiplication would then be 2 x (12) being 24. Then 48?24 being 2. The real answering is two although it does kind of make me wonder as to why the picture was made, perhaps it was a troll inside a troll. :o My fault for not bothering to think of it after I saw the picture, it was from today.

YAHTZEE!

EDIT: Oh, and by the way, for those of you using Google, you're wrong, because it is constructing the equation as (48/2) x (9+3). You have to type it like 48/(2(9+3))

Multiplication and division as well as addition and subtraction have the same priority so you go left from right.

Was just about to note that after I thought about it again. I guess small tricks learned from over 10 years ago can become blurry after a while. The picture was right. I guess that's why I only received a 32 on the ACT for the math part last year, basic math skills have eluded me.

I agree with Scotty, the answer is obviously 2. Order of operations is like GML, the creator of the source (in this case, expression) has freedom in expressing the same thing in different ways, and obviously, the guy who wrote this was trying to say 48/(2(9+3)) and not (48/2)*(9+3).

Yeah, changing the problem completely to make yourself right makes so much more sense than doing it as it was written.  I am a freaking arithmetic nazi.  I get heated guys.  HEATED!

But naw.  I'm over it.

That people obviously intentionally argue that the answer is 2 just to piss off people who know math?

It gets good when they start trying to prove their troll logic by using logic I used to prove things wrong.

I might seem umad right nao bros.  But far from it.  I enjoy conversations like this.

been too many yrs since high school, also i dont even remember the order of operations thing. dont think my school even went over that haha:P i feel so dumb right now
