I thought I would try this on one of my steam friends:
QuoteGeneral Wartz: hey are you good at math?
Grundlebear (1): yes
General Wartz: solve this please
General Wartz: 48?2(9+3) = ?
Grundlebear (1): lol
Grundlebear (1): u can't do that?
General Wartz: try it...
Grundlebear (1): 2
General Wartz: no
General Wartz: thats wrong
Grundlebear (1): if you prove me wrong
Grundlebear (1): then i'll go with you
Grundlebear (1): if not i'm correct
General Wartz: i think its 288
Grundlebear (1): no...
Grundlebear (1): its 2
General Wartz: no its 288
General Wartz: look at it again
Grundlebear (1): 9+3 is 12
General Wartz: yes
Grundlebear (1): times 2 is 24
General Wartz: wait
General Wartz: stop right there
General Wartz: 48?2(9+3) = ?
Grundlebear (1): 48/24
General Wartz: hold up
Grundlebear (1): gives you 2
General Wartz: no
General Wartz: wrong
General Wartz: so listen
General Wartz: 9+3 = 12, right?
General Wartz: both multiplication and division have the same priority, right?
General Wartz: so
General Wartz: 24(12) = 288
Grundlebear (1): hm
Grundlebear (1): thats a good act question
Grundlebear (1): although if i were to see it on a magor exam
Grundlebear (1): i would give it more thought
General Wartz: well
Grundlebear (1): then just trying it my head
General Wartz: since they both have the same priority,
General Wartz: dont you read it from left to right?
Grundlebear (1): yes
General Wartz: so it would be 288
Grundlebear (1): i know i did right from left lol
General Wartz: so i am correct and you are wrong?
Grundlebear (1): yes
General Wartz: okay.
General Wartz: thanks.
Grundlebear (1): ok
Grundlebear (1): what was this going to prove
Grundlebear (1): ...?
Grundlebear (1): so?
General Wartz: no further discussion
General Wartz: thanks.
Grundlebear (1): if ur trying to prove ur smarter...i would reconsider
Grundlebear (1): just saying
General Wartz: whats a magor exam?
Grundlebear (1): ACT/SAT
Grundlebear (1): any sort of AP Examp
Grundlebear (1): Exam*
General Wartz: those are "magor" in your opinion
Grundlebear (1): i thinks that it
General Wartz: ?
Grundlebear (1): im focusing the college spectrum
Grundlebear (1): in the*
General Wartz: oh okay.
General Wartz: I don't think any collegs would accept you if you spelled words like "major" as "magor"
Grundlebear (1): i know
General Wartz: okay.
General Wartz: thanks.
Grundlebear (1): but you know whats funny?
General Wartz: this is serious?
Grundlebear (1): i never said the word "major" nor "magor" lol
Grundlebear (1): you did
Grundlebear (1): and you quoted yourself
Grundlebear (1): and corrected yourself
Grundlebear (1): good job
Grundlebear (1): 9:54 PM - General Wartz (1): whats a magor exam?
General Wartz: "Grundlebear (1): although if i were to see it on a magor exam"
Grundlebear (1): then
Grundlebear (1): if you knew i was wrong
Grundlebear (1): why would you make a mistake
Grundlebear (1): and go back up and search for it?
Grundlebear (1): wartz in 7th grade i got a 19 on act
Grundlebear (1): thats the avg of a freshman or sophmore
General Wartz: sounds like a magorly good job.

You guys are crazy... I got 24. :I

Also, I actually got 8.6 repeating.
I used the distributive property, which takes priority to all of your previously stated bullshit. (http://www.algebrahelp.com/lessons/simplifying/distribution)

I actually tried that before but since the thing has to be read left to right you have to divide before you distribute because that is technically multiplication not parentheses in this case.

*COUGH* Get on my level, sir.

Edit: Underlined a key word from that site for you to see so I can emphasize how awesome I am.

"The Distributive Property is an algebra property which is used to multiply a single term and two or more terms inside a set of parentheses. Take a look at the problem below"

It is using an outside thing to multiply what is inside.  Which is usually variables.  But in this case it isn't meaning you can add the inside on its own without distributing.  But regardless if the number 2 is not in the parentheses it is not considered a parentheses to be done first.

Feels so good.

I'm getting competitive as this goes on.

If you took the time to watch Scotties video then you would know the truth.
That people obviously intentionally argue that the answer is 2 just to piss off people who know math?
Yeah that's about it.

You have to do this:
48/2(9+3)
24(9+3)
216+72
288

2. 48?2(12) Parentheses first

3. 24(12) Divide

4. 288 Multiply by distributing.

Answer is 288

Oh lord, why must you humor me with so much irony?! Seriously, I must resist. Your thread is win Scott, so much win. Had I known the number 288 acted has a light source to curious bugs I surely would have taken advantage of it sooner.

48?2(9+3) = ?

9 + 3 = 12

48?2(12)

48/2 = 24

24 * 12 = 288.

That's what I got. Multiplication does not have priority over division.
