48/2(9+3)=
48/2(12)=
24(12)=
=About 288

I know some one will try to hound me about how this is wrong but it is correct,  you do not multiply you only add because only addition is in the parenthesis.

Edited because of my random eighteen.

lol, Nice topic. I'm for the 288 and down with all you 2 lovers!

Where's that 18 coming from? It's either done like this:
48/2(9+3)=
48/2(12)=
24(12)=288 (which is what I believe it to be)
OR
48/2(9+3)=
48/(18+6)=
48/24=
2

Edited dude.  Was an accident because I was speaking with some one and I tend to accidentally write things I say.  But yeah, first one is right.  Multiplication and division have the same priority so the first one would be correct.

There are actually multiple answers you can get from this expression, and I'm not really sure which one is right, or if there is a right answer.. 8)...

The first answer I got was 288.

Using order of operations, do the stuff in the parenthesis first, then multiply from left to right.
48/2(9+3)
48/2(12)
14(12)
288

Then I re-evaluated it... and realized I could have distributed first, getting 2 as an answer.

48/2(9+3)
48/(18+6)
48/24
2

I'm sure there are other ways to evaluate it as well but I just took 2 seconds to look at it and started typing...

The bottom answer isn't correct because you are assuming there is a parenthesis in front of the 2.

This is the actual problem you are solving.  48/(2(9+3))  Because in PEMDAS multiplication and division have the same necessity so you'd go left to right making it impossible to distribute like that.

EDIT: Hmm... maybe I should explain more... I mean, for those who can't understand the power of the above image...

Well... either way you're assuming parenthesis:
Either 48/(2(9+3)) or (48/2)*(9+3).
It really does depend on which order of operations you're following...

He was obviously getting ready to put the two 8's.   By the logic of the lower equation the answer should have ended up like this

48/2(9+3)
48/18+6  Once you distribute you don't keep the parenthesis and you'll end up with the same mistake I made the first time before I corrected it.

Honestly I think it's 288 but I always side with the doubted xD
However, anyone who knows anything about math wouldn't write an expression that way.

I agree that this expression is obviously ambiguous, and should have been clarified by additional parenthesis... But, with that said, I also agree with Raeyo on the left to right rule, so it'd be 288 as written.

Meiun

It's 288, pretty certain of that.
