Looking for a console RPG to play, preferabbly PS1 or Ps2. I'm sick and tired of playing through RPG's where the main character is some kid pansy to start, or pansies all around. As in, ff12, Vaan and penelo? Really? And lost oddysey was doing okay until they gave me the grandkids. Star oceans are pretty bad for it too. Suikoden aswell.

I want a main character who isn't some newb plz.

Suggest. And don't suggest any Final fantasies, I am already familiar with them.

What RPG's do you consider have pansy main character's and we will select one that you have not listed.

Shadow of the Colossus. I don't know much about if the main character is inexperienced or something, but go ahead and try it if you haven't already.

EDIT: Wikipedia says that Wander (main protagonist) fights the 16 colossi (also the only 16 monsters in the game) for the purpose of reviving Mono, some girl he likes that was sacrificed because everyone thought she had a curse.

Seifer

Shadow of the collosus isn't so much an RPG game as it is an action/adventure, in my eyes anyways.

And let's use Vaan from ff12 as a prime example. He's some 16 year old kid who doesen't know squat about fighting or the world or anywhere. He has stupid childish lines throughout the game and acts like a child. Therefore, pansy.

What exactly do you define as 'pansy'?
This

Sorry, that wasn't a definition, that was a picture.  Seifer wins, you fail.

Mkay, Seif.  Is there a limit on the kind of RPG (Western RPG, a la Oblivion, vs. JRPG, such as Final Fantasy series), and system, or does it have to be PS1/PS2?

I'm guessing you're refering more to JRPG's, since more often than not, Western RPG's are actually more similar to actual Role-Playing, thus you kinda pick how your character acts...

If by western RPG's you refer to such games As fallout, Mass effect, Oblivion and dragon age, than yes, JRPG is prefereed. Although Dragonage was amazing.  Ps1/Ps2 is always prefereed, as I can easily get my hands on any game. But anything for nintendo is okay to. I would just have to actually buy any ps3/Xbox games soo...

I just woulden't mind a manly, experiences character as a main character.

I'm playing through suikoden II right now, and my main character is some kid with no experience and he has his sister tag along too, and he looks so out of place with the rest of my group, and I hate all this silly childish sideplot between him and his sister, it's just blah!

Chaos

Ah, yeah, Dragon Age is what I was thinking of.  That game IS amazing.  :P

Nothing comes to mind at the moment on the JRPG front, but I'll let you know if I think of anything.

Yes, despite the fact that I pretty much despise Oblivion and fallout, since they are just to.. Open, no direction, I loved Dragon age. But I guess that is because it's more like Kotr, which is amazing.

Anyways, good to know your on it, IIRC, you have played a plethora of RPG's.

I would recommend the .Hack//G.U series for PS2, that's a fantastic JRPG. I suppose it does have some childish aspects to it with some of the characters you can choose to party with, but then you can just not choose them :3. Also for it to make a blip of sense I'd highly recommend you watch the .hack//roots anime, or read the manga. It's a strange story, you probably wouldn't like it if you jumped straight into it.

Heres a little video of the gameplay.

(Yes, that's Rayu's weapon.)

Lingus

Since you're actually talking about JRPG's and not RPG's in general... it's kind of a typical thing for the main character to be like that. If that's something that bothers you, why do you like JRPG's?

What's the difference between a JRPG and an RPG?

Well, if you're talking about RPG as a Western RPG, then surprisingly quite a bit.  JRPG means Japanese Role-Playing Game, and it generally refers to the Final Fantasy-ish genre of games.  Semi-feminine looking guys with spiky hair, but also has a fairly linear storyline.  One distinction I've generally made is, in WRPG's, the game generally let's you play the main character as yourself.  In a JRPG, You're more like floating behind the main character and pointing where to move and directing how to fight, but otherwise don't have a very large influence on the general story.

Think of it as a comparison of Dungeons & Dragons (WRPG) and Final Fantasy (JRPG).  That's essentially what it comes down to.

@Lingus (and Pat, probably)- The semi-feminine looking main character with spiky hair isn't related at all to whether the character is a pansy.  Seifer has already made this distinction.  Essentially, he's looking for games where the main character isn't acting like an immature child, and certainly not all JRPGs are like that.

@Seifer:  Well, if you haven't played it, I highly recommend Kingdom Hearts I, RE:CoM, and II.  That's kind of an odd case where the main character IS a kid, but acts surprisingly non-kiddish, lol.  Plus, the series rocks.
