Typically with a "Choose-your-own-story" (are they called visual novels? I've never heard that) you follow completely different paths through the story. It's not simply a different ending. I believe in cave story the main plot that you follow is the same up until the ending. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope you are correct.
For the most part. Depending on a couple certain things you can do in the game(won't say them because they're major spoilers), what happens can change late in the game(again, not listing them due to spoilers). They are major differences, but the main plot is still the same. They have to do with obtaining the endings(difference between Normal and Good mainly).

Listen to LeGuy and Chaos. This is one of the best free games you will ever play. Chaos introduced me to it and I heavily enjoyed it. Beat it 100%, all 3 endings, took a week or so. The sole creator, Pixel, also has a few other minor works as well. Here's a tribute website where I got mine(yes, I realize there is a link DarkBlade325 gave you, but there's more stuff by Pixel here.)

I think xgamer is trying to say that it has the same concept of a visual novel. But, it's more like a choose-your-own-story type of thing (if that's what they are called, anyways).

Uh, except it's a 2d platformer and absolutely nothing like a 'choose-your-own-story' type of thing.  The ONLY thing even remotely in common is that they have different endings.  That's not exclusive to visual novels, or any other genre.  Hell, the RPG Chrono Trigger for the SNES (one of the best games in existence, incidentally) had TWELVE different endings.

I know what he's saying, but it's just way off mark.
I said it sounded like one I NEVER SAID IT WAS.

Mr Pwnage

I have heard Chaos and several other mention this game before. Especially when looking at 8-bit graphics I hear people a lot of times say "looks like cavestory". I have never actually played it until now. Well I just downloaded it and played it for 3 hours or so (just making it past the egg boss). It's simply put an awesome game. I would say simplicity yet uniqueness of it makes it a game just as novel as SMB1 for the NES. I will definitely be playing it on and off till complete.

I know exactly what you said.  And I said that your reasons for thinking it sounded like one were way off mark, because just about any genre and any media can have different endings.  Derp derp.

Anyway, yeah.  I encourage anyone and everyone download it.  And if you really like it, buy the WiiWare one (assuming you have Wii) and support the developer.  :P

DarkBlade325

D-d-d-double post.

Just got it on the Wii through WiiWare. Havn't played it just yet but I did select the channel and man did I love the classic jingle, even if it did cut off a bit abrupt.

crozier

yeah, its worth it on wiiware. Got a crapload of new stuff. Play as a different caracter,3 difficulties, etc.
it truely is a good game. You can even choose to play with updated sound/graphics. I play with the old stuff though.
